Benin City mothers: their beliefs concerning infant feeding and child care.

One hundred and forty-three mothers residing in a representative area of Benin City were interviewed concerning their beliefs about child care, nutrition, and sources of information related to child care. Although all the mothers believed that breast-feeding was a natural procedure which should start from birth, they were not aware of the importance of breast milk to the baby. 58.7 per cent of the mothers would introduce artificial milk within the first month of life, and only 19.6 per cent would give breast milk alone for the first three months. Kwashiorkor was not widely believed to be relat

Micronutrient-fortified infant cereal improves Hb status and reduces iron-deficiency anaemia in Indian infants: an effectiveness study.

Anaemia affects approximately 69 % of Indian children aged 6-12 months, with Fe deficiency (ID) being a common cause. The effectiveness of micronutrient-fortified infant cereal in improving Fe status and neurodevelopment was evaluated in non-anaemic and mildly anaemic Indian infants. An intervention group (IC) enrolled at age 6 months consumed 50 g/d of rice-based cereal providing 3·75 mg Fe/d as ferrous fumarate for 6 months (n 80) and was compared with a matched static cross-sectional control group (CG) without intervention enrolled at age 12 months (n 80). Mean Hb was higher in IC (118·1 (s

Immunologically mediated damage to the intestinal mucosa.

This review discusses experimental and clinical evidence for the existence of immunologically mediated damage to the intestinal mucosa. The discussion of mechanisms of gastrointestinal immunoregulation and lymphocyte recirculation via recently described homing receptors is preceded by a summary of the basic structures of the gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT). The relevance of food-induced systemic hyporesponsiveness (oral tolerance) to the prevention of immunologically mediated damage to intestinal mucosa is discussed in the light of anaphylactic (Type I) and delayed type (Type IV) hypers

Susceptibility of riboflavin and vitamin A in breast milk to photodegradation and its implications for the use of banked breast milk in infant feeding.

Up to 50% of the riboflavin and up to 70% of the vitamin A in human drip breast milk samples were destroyed during controlled exposure to daylight, either in translucent polythene bottles, or where the milk was pumped through naso-gastric tubing from a syringe to mimic the conditions of enteral feeding. Losses were also observed in milk which was exposed to standard phototherapy illumination under conditions similar to those encountered in the ward, and in this case riboflavin was destroyed to a greater extent than vitamin A. Photodegradation of riboflavin may contribute to the high incidence

Food-induced cutaneous adverse reactions.

The skin is the most frequently affected target organ in allergy or intolerance of food and food additives. The most common manifestation is acute urticaria (with or without angioedema), accounting for 40-60% of patients with IgE-mediated food allergy, whereas food additives rather aggravate chronic urticaria (intolerance provocation). The role of food allergy in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis is still controversial; however, there is no doubt that, particularly in infants and young children, food allergens can induce atopic dermatitis or aggravate skin lesions. In adults, food allergy

The relevance of anti-food antibodies for the diagnosis of food allergy.

All individuals are exposed to large amounts of potentially immunogenic food proteins. Most people respond by producing IgG, IgA, or IgM antibodies. The presence of such antibodies in serum is a normal, but not necessarily physiologic phenomenon. In certain groups of individuals, such as young infants, persons with a selective IgA deficiency and patients with inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders, especially high levels of such antibodies are commonly found despite complete tolerance to intake of the food in question. Obviously the finding of IgG, IgA or IgM antibodies to food proteins in se

Breast milk miRNAs and their potential role in the development of atopy in infants.

Human breast milk is a dynamic biological fluid enriched with bioactive components, including extracellular vesicle-derived microRNAs (miRNAs), which have emerged as potential mediators of early immune programming. Growing evidence suggests that maternal atopic status can alter the breast milk miRNA profile, potentially shaping the infant's susceptibility to atopic disorders, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma, and food allergy. This review presents current research examining the link between breast milk miRNA composition and the development of atopy in infants, with a particular focus on mater

A 10-year (2014-2023) review of complementary food development in sub-Saharan Africa and the impact on child health.

Complementary foods (CFs) commonly consumed by infants and young children (IYC) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are processed using either single or multi-grain ingredients through simple technologies such as fermentation, malting and roasting. Interestingly, CFs (e.g., ogi, kunu, and dabo) are prepared and fed to infants alongside breastmilk until they are completely weaned up to the infant's second birthday. The grains used for preparing CFs can be contaminated with bacterial and chemical contaminants as a result of poor harvesting, handling or storage practices. The stage at which IYC are intro

Cow milk protein allergy during the first year of life: a 12 year experience at the children's hospital, Bangkok.

CMA should be suspected for patients aged less than one year who had persistent diarrhea and/or hematemesis with no enteric pathogen found. Confirmed diagnosis could be made by Goldman challenge test. Patients with confirmed CMA should be treated by changing the cow milk feeding to soy milk feeding. However, in our study, 17% of CMA patients were also allergic to soy protein. Thus the soy milk was replaced by the elemental formula for successful treatment of this group of patients. Beside persistent diarrhea, hematemesis, anemia and hypoalbuminemia were other possible findings among patients w

[Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia of inadequately breast-fed infants and the effect of formula supplementation].

One hundred and fifty full-term breast-fed infants were analysed for their oral intake in the first 6 days. Fifty infants with less than 330 ml/kg/6 days breast feeding were defined as inadequately breast-fed infants. Twenty inadequately breast-fed infants without formula supplementation had significantly lower total fluid intake, lower total calorie intake, more body weight loss and significantly higher rates of hyperbilirubinemia and requirement of phototherapy when compared with the control group of 100 infants with more than 330 ml/kg/6 days breast feeding. On the other hand, 30 inadequate

Methionine fortification of a soy protein formula fed to infants.

Data from study of nine normal full-term infants fed a soy isolate-based formula unsupplemented with methionine were compared with similar data from study of 10 similar infants fed the same formula supplemented with L-methionine and with data from previous studies of larger groups of infants receiving various other feedings. Food intake, growth, and serum chemical values were studied from 8 through 111 days of age. In addition, nitrogen balance studies were carried out. Statistically significant differences were as follows: lesser weight gain per 100 kcal by infants fed the unsupplemented soy

Impact of the 2009 WIC revision on infant and maternal health: A quasi-experimental multi-state study.

Improving food security and dietary quality during pregnancy is vital for maternal and infant health. Poor nutrition can lead to adverse fetal development and complications for women. In 2009, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infant, and Children (WIC), a US safety net program for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum women and young children, was revised to improve dietary quality, promoting intake of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Prior studies found the revision improved dietary quality, but its impact on downstream health is less understood. We analyz

The supplemental use of infant formula in the context of universal breastfeeding practices in Western Nepal.

BACKGROUND: While the initiation of breastfeeding is universal in Nepal, little has been reported on formula feeding practices. This study aimed to report the prevalence of, and factors associated with, the use of infant formula as supplementary feeds in the Western region of Nepal. METHODS: A community-based cohort study was conducted to collect infant feeding information among 735 postpartum mothers using structured questionnaires. Complete formula feeding data were collected from 711 women in the first, fourth and sixth month postpartum. Factors independently associated with formula feedin

Longitudinal study of breastfeeding structure and women's work in the Brazilian Amazon.

It is well established that breast milk is the ideal food for infants and that breastfeeding has short- and long-term health benefits for the mother and child. However, there is variation in breastfeeding patterns between populations. Women's work is thought to influence breastfeeding patterns and timing of supplementation and it is often assumed that women in subsistence-oriented societies can more easily integrate their productive and reproductive activities. This article reports longitudinal data, collected in three rounds (resguardo [<40 days], peak [2-4 months], and late [14-16 months] la

A RISKmilk framework for predicting drug and chemical exposure in human milk during breastfeeding.

BACKGROUND: Medication decisions during breastfeeding are often made with limited quantitative evidence, partly because lactating women remain underrepresented in pharmacokinetic studies. Current assessments rely largely on sparse milk concentration data, empirical milk-to-plasma ratios, and fragmented case reports, providing limited capacity for systematic, quantitative, and mechanistic evaluation of lactational drug exposure and infant safety. We constructed a structure-driven, AI-enabled physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) framework, RISKmilk, to predict drug and chemical transfer
