BACKGROUND: Clinical practice is essential for student nurse anesthetists to integrate theory with practical skills; however, the demanding clinical environment can impact both stress and learning outcomes. Responsibilities and expectations differ across healthcare systems, and research in the Swedish context remains limited. Addressing this gap is essential for understanding how clinical practice contributes to the development of professional readiness and competence. This study, therefore, aimed to describe the learning experiences of students and newly graduated nurse anesthetists, with a f

Stress is assumed to cause a shift from flexible 'cognitive' memory to more rigid 'habit' memory. In the spatial memory domain, stress impairs place learning depending on the hippocampus whereas stimulus-response learning based on the striatum appears to be improved. While the neural basis of this shift is still unclear, previous evidence in rodents points towards cortisol interacting with the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) to affect amygdala functioning. The amygdala is in turn assumed to orchestrate the stress-induced shift in memory processing. However, an integrative study testing these m

Melatonin acts as a multifunctional regulator of plant stress adaptation by reprogramming primary and secondary metabolism and coordinating ROS, nitric oxide, and phytohormone signalling. Integrating metabolomics with transcriptomics and proteomics provides new insights into these mechanisms and highlights melatonin as a promising strategy for enhancing crop resilience and productivity under diverse environmental stresses. Plants, being sessile, are continuously exposed to diverse environmental challenges, which disrupt cellular homeostasis and reduce crop productivity. To survive under such c

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exposure and testosterone deficiency in adult men, and to explore molecular changes and candidate compounds related to DEHP-associated male reproductive toxicity.
METHODS: We used a multi-level integrative strategy. Computational toxicology predicted DEHP endocrine-disrupting potential. In NHANES 2013-2016 adult males, survey-weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic splines assessed associations between urinary DEHP metabolites and testosterone deficiency. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to DEHP to

The Gut Microbiome-Liver-Brain Axis is a relatively novel construct with promising potential to enhance our understanding of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), and its therapeutic approaches. Significant alterations in the gut microbiome occur in AUD even before any other systemic signs or symptoms manifest. Prolonged and inappropriate alcohol consumption, by affecting the gut microbiota and gut mucosa permeability, is thought to contribute to the development of behavioral and cognitive impairments, leading to Alcohol-Related Liver Disorders and potentially progressing into alcoholic cirrhosis, which

Alkalinity, a key environmental stressor in saline-alkali ecosystems, adversely affects the growth and survival of aquatic organisms. Genetic improvement of alkali-tolerant fish strains offers a promising strategy for utilizing saline-alkaline water resources; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying the response to alkalinity stress remain inadequately understood. This study aimed to identify novel molecular signatures of alkaline exposure in grass carp by integrating gut microbiome profiling with host transcriptome data. Histological analysis revealed significant alterations in the heigh

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a heterogeneous disorder whose biological basis remains incompletely understood. Although the rapid postpartum decline in progesterone and its neuroactive metabolite allopregnanolone has been implicated in PPD, this hormonal transition occurs in all pregnant individuals, whereas only a subset develop depression. This review proposes a two-hit framework in which early-life adversity establishes persistent, maladaptive stress-system vulnerability and pregnancy-related progesterone exposure subsequently interacts with that altered system to increase depression risk.

INTRODUCTION: This study develops a methodological framework to investigate the relationship between mathematical learning stress and neuroendocrine responses through causal modeling. Traditional approaches often fail to capture the complex interplay between psychological stressors and physiological responses, limiting their ability to provide actionable insights. To address these limitations, we propose the Representation-Factorized-Optimal (RFO) model, which is specifically designed to model the intricate dynamics between stress experienced during mathematical learning and the associated neu

Mitohormesis defines the increase in fitness mediated by adaptive responses to mild mitochondrial stress. Tetracyclines inhibit not only bacterial but also mitochondrial translation, thus imposing a low level of mitochondrial stress on eukaryotic cells. We demonstrate in cell and germ-free mouse models that tetracyclines induce a mild adaptive mitochondrial stress response (MSR), involving both the ATF4-mediated integrative stress response and type I interferon (IFN) signaling. To overcome the interferences of tetracyclines with the host microbiome, we identify tetracycline derivatives that ha

The central autonomic network (CAN) plays a critical role in the stress response, which is triggered by challenges on the homeostasis (physiological stressors) or unpleasant social or environmental situations. This review focuses on the role of areas of the CAN including the insular and anterior cingulate cortices, extended amygdala, hypothalamus, periaqueductal gray and locus coeruleus in the stress response. These areas are interconnected and affect sympathetic or parasympathetic output via their influence on premotor or preganglionic autonomic neurons in the lower brainstem and spinal cord.

The lack of physiologically relevant and controllable experimental systems has limited mechanistic understanding of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and the development of effective therapeutic strategies. Here, we present a tunablein vitroretinal pigment epithelium (RPE) stress model that integrates engineered light delivery with lipid modulation to reproduce early AMD-like cellular pathology under standard culture conditions. Human RPE cells (ARPE-19 and iPSC-derived RPE) were exposed to precisely controlled, low-intensity light-induced oxidative stress in the presence of docosahexaeno

Chemotherapy resistance is a key factor in tumor recurrence and mortality and a barrier to durable therapeutic effectiveness. Besides canonical mechanisms, including target alterations and drug efflux, tumor cells integrate chemotherapy-induced DNA damage, oxidative stress, and metabolic stress into persistent adaptive stress-response programs in which the autophagy-lysosomal pathway (ALP) plays a pivotal role. Transcription factor EB (TFEB), a master transcriptional regulator of the ALP, undergoes stress-responsive nuclear translocation under chemotherapeutic conditions through mechanistic ta

Force-controlled fatigue testing maintains constant stress amplitude and is better suited than displacement-controlled methods for elucidating viscoelastic behavior because it mitigates stress variations from machine compliance, accommodates cyclic softening, and reproduces realistic conditions for biomedical and wearable applications. Such experiments are seldom conducted on thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films. To address this, a Digital Image Correlation (DIC)-integrated platform characterizes the cyclic response of 150-μm-thick PDMS films with 0.1% strain resolution across 77 samples, of

The integrated stress response (ISR) is an important mechanism by which cells confer protection against environmental stresses. Central to the ISR is a collection of related protein kinases that monitor stress conditions, such as Gcn2 (EIF2AK4) that recognizes nutrient limitations, inducing phosphorylation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 (eIF2). Gcn2 phosphorylation of eIF2 lowers bulk protein synthesis, conserving energy and nutrients, coincident with preferential translation of stress-adaptive gene transcripts, such as that encoding the Atf4 transcriptional regulator. While Gcn…

Mitochondria are bound by a double membrane and are semiautonomous organelles, rendering them highly vulnerable to global and internal proteostatic stress1. Multiple surveillance mechanisms at proteostatic and inter-organellar levels have evolved to maintain mitochondrial integrity and cellular health2-7. However, the precise mechanisms by which proteostatic damage relays stress signals across organelles and how the quality surveillance machinery coordinates these functions remain unknown. Here we report that under proteostatic stress, damaged mitochondrial proteins are sequestered to form str

Mitochondria are central hubs integrating cellular bioenergetics, redox balance, innate immune signaling, and metabolic homeostasis. During bacterial infections, these organelles are recurrent targets of pathogen-derived toxins, secreted effectors, and host inflammatory mediators, leading to a state broadly defined as mitochondrial stress. This stress encompasses alterations in oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondrial dynamics, calcium handling, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and activation or disruption of mitochondrial quality control pathways such as mitophagy. In this perspectiv
