Eyedealistic Vision: Optimizing Oxygenation to Reduce Severe Retinopathy of Prematurity in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: Rates of severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) continue to rise globally despite advances in healthcare. Differences in practices related to optimizing oxygenation is among key factors that increase the risk of severe ROP. A recent increase in severe ROP rates at 2 local neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) prompted further investigation into potential preventative practices. PURPOSE: The project team's goal was to reduce rates of severe ROP by 20% in the 2 participating units. METHODS: A level IV and level III NICU were targeted, including 255 infants at risk for ROP. Interve

Candida auris Infection, a Rapidly Emerging Threat in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units: A Systematic Review.

(1) Background: In recent years, a global epidemiological shift in candidemia has been observed, marked by the emergence of resistant non-albicans Candida species. Candida auris, in particular, has become a significant global concern, causing infections in both pediatric and adult populations within healthcare settings. Despite its widespread impact, there is a limited understanding of the clinical course and transmission dynamics of neonatal systemic Candida auris infections, hindering effective prevention and management. This study focused on the epidemiologic data, the clinical presentation

The practices of intravenous sodium bicarbonate therapy in neonatal intensive care units: A multi-country survey.

A common occurrence in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is metabolic acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate (SB) has been widely used, but there is insufficient evidence on how SB affects neonates in NICUs with metabolic acidosis. The worsening of intracellular acidosis, the impairment of myocardial function, fluctuations in cerebral blood flow, and intracranial hemorrhage are some of the unfavorable effects of SB treatment in neonates that have been documented in the literature. This study aimed to explore neonatologists' practices for using intravenous SB (ISB) in NICUs. A multi-country survey

The Relation between Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after Cesarean Section.

BACKGROUND: The experience of a neonate hospitalized in the NICU is an understandably traumatic experience for parents, especially for the mothers of neonates. This mental distress resulting from preterm birth and/or NICU hospitalization can be understood as post-traumatic symptomatology, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5 version). The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of the admission of a neonate to the NICU (forany reason) on the development of postpartum PTSD in a sample of women after cesarean section. METHODS: A total of 469 women

The past, current, and future of neonatal intensive care units with artificial intelligence: a systematic review.

Machine learning and deep learning are two subsets of artificial intelligence that involve teaching computers to learn and make decisions from any sort of data. Most recent developments in artificial intelligence are coming from deep learning, which has proven revolutionary in almost all fields, from computer vision to health sciences. The effects of deep learning in medicine have changed the conventional ways of clinical application significantly. Although some sub-fields of medicine, such as pediatrics, have been relatively slow in receiving the critical benefits of deep learning, related re

Risk factors for neonatal thrombosis: A retrospective study conducted in a single Canadian intensive care unit.

Among children, neonates have the highest incidence of thrombosis. We conducted a retrospective review of neonatal thrombosis, in a single intensive care unit (ICU) over 4.5 years. Among 4860 ICU admissions to our center, identified through the Canadian Neonatal Network database, 186 were associated with arterial and venous thrombosis involving 195 thrombotic sites. The neonatal thrombosis incidence was 38 per 1000 neonatal ICU admissions. We assessed patient characteristics and compared the association between risk factors and thrombosis. In the multivariate analysis, central venous catheters
