Gastrointestinal tract involvement by neurofibromatous lesions is rare and occurs most frequently as one of the systemic manifestations of generalized neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). In this setting, the lesions may manifest as focal scattered neurofibromas or as an extensive diffuse neural hyperplasia designated ganglioneuromatosis. Occasionally, such lesions may be the initial sign of NF1 in patients without any other clinical manifestations of the disease. Rarely, cases of isolated neurofibromatosis of the large bowel with no prior or subsequent evidence of generalized neurofibromatosis hav

Giant inflammatory pseudopolyps (> 15 mm) are an uncommon complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and a differential diagnosis with adenomas and carcinomas is challenging. Although usually asymptomatic, they may result in intestinal obstruction or intussusception due to their size. The standard management involves lesion biopsies and endoscopic excision for selected cases; surgery is usually reserved for size-associated complications or an uncertain pathology. We report the case of a 43-year-old female patient with Crohn's disease (CD) in clinical remission, with no specific treatment

Adult intussusception is a relatively rare clinical entity. Almost 90% of cases of intussusception in adults are secondary to a pathologic condition that serves as a lead point. Lymphangioma of the small bowel is an unusual tumour that has been rarely reported to cause intussusception. In this paper, we present a rare case of adult intussusception due to jejunal lymphangioma. A 22-year-old female patient with a medical history significant for anaemia presented with intermittent colicky abdominal pain, diarrhoea and oedema of the inferior limbs for the past three months. Ultrasonography and CT

Intussusception is defined as the telescoping of a segment of the gastrointestinal tract (intussusceptum) into an immediately adjacent distal bowel (intussuscipiens). Intussusception is a relatively rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adults. Unlike in children, a lead point is present in 90% of adult cases. The most common causes of small bowel intussusception are benign, usually hamartomas, lipomas, inflammatory polyps, adenomas and leiomyomas, in contrast to the large intestine where malignant tumors, usually adenocarcinomas, are more common. The clinical presentation of adult intussusc

BACKGROUND: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease, caused by a deficiency of arylsulfatase A, and leads to demyelination of the nervous system. A putative association between MLD and gallbladder pathology including malignancy is documented in the medical literature.
CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old boy with MLD was found to have a papillary growth within a cystically dilated gallbladder. The lesion was confirmed to be papillomatosis/polyp with focal intestinal metaplasia. Dysplasia was not identified.
CONCLUSION: MLD may be associated with a spectru

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are unusual neoplasms with a diverse spectrum of clinical presentations. There is a lack of literature on cases of 2 primary histologically distinct NETs. We report a case of a 40-year-old man who presented with chronic diarrhea. A colonoscopy was performed which discovered a rectal polyp, with pathology showing a well-differentiated NET. A subsequent somatostatin scan revealed a pancreatic tail mass. Biopsy showed a histologically distinct well-differentiated vasoactive intestinal peptide-producing NET. Given that pancreatic and rectal NETs come from different emb

Monoclonal antibody (MAb) 12-4LE reacts specifically with the alpha Fuc(1-2) beta Gal(1-4) [alpha Fuc(1-3)]GlcNAc-R synthetic oligosaccharide and consequently characterizes the Y (Ley) antigen. In normal individuals, this MAb reacts more strongly on samples from blood group O persons, indicating that the Y structure is better recognized when terminal A or B sugars are not added to the Y structure. In fetal and normal adult gastrointestinal tract, this antibody reacts with the epithelium of stomach, small intestine and proximal colon, but not of distal colon. In the adult, cells from the surfac

AIMS: Inflammatory fibroid polyps (IFP) are mesenchymal tumours of the gastrointestinal tract. This study was performed to broaden the base of evidence of the pathogenic role of PDGFR mutations in IFP with particular regard to clinicopathological data and mutational patterns among IFP subtypes.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Molecular analysis of 38 tumours revealed activating mutations in three different exons of PDGFRA in 25 IFP. For the first time we report two cases with PDGFRA-exon 14 mutations (p.N659K; p.[N659K(+)T665A]). The results of our study and cases reported earlier indicate clearly that

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), a type of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, is a rare and aggressive disease with a poor prognosis due to its advanced presentation at diagnosis. It is characterized by a translocation in the Bcl-1 gene, which results in overexpression of cyclin D1. MCL is frequently seen in the form of multiple lymphomatous polyposis (MLP) in which innumerable polyps are observed in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In rare instances, MCL presents a single mass. The most common presentation involves male patients in their sixties, with generalized lymphadenopathy, extranodal involvemen

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer and its frequency has been on the constant and significant increase over the past 20 years. Prevention aiming for early precancerous detection, results in huge financial savings in the health care system. METHODOLOGY AND TEST SUBJECTS: Prospective randomized clinical research was conducted on 150 randomly chosen asymptomatic persons over the age of 50, with positive family history. All test subjects were given a Haemoccult test and colonoscopy examination. Primary objective of the research was to detect precancerous symp

BACKGROUND: Data on the frequency of colorectal neoplasia in sporadic ampullary tumors remains scarce.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 135 patients undergoing endoscopic ampullectomy from January 2018 to July 2021, and identified 95 patients with sporadic ampullary adenoma who underwent total colonoscopy. Colonoscopy findings were compared with 380 asymptomatic controls using the chi-squared test. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed on one patient with synchronous adenomas of the ampulla of Vater and ascending colon.
RESULTS: Colorectal polyps were present in 60% of Cases vs. 34.

Gastric dysplasia comprises a heterogeneous group of non-invasive epithelial neoplasms with distinct clinicopathological and biological characteristics. This review focuses on surface epithelium-derived lesions, including intestinal-type, foveolar-type, and serrated dysplasia/adenoma. Conventional low-grade intestinal-type dysplasias/adenomas arise mainly in atrophic and metaplastic mucosa associated with Helicobacter pylori infection or, much less frequently, autoimmune gastritis. Small, pale, flat-elevated lesions with orderly small-intestinal differentiation generally behave indolently, whe

Colorectal cancer (CRC), which develops from the gradual evolution of tubular adenomas and serrated polyps in the colon and rectum, has a poor prognosis and a high mortality rate. In addition to genetics, lifestyle, and chronic diseases, intestinal integrity and microbiota (which facilitate digestion, metabolism, and immune regulation) could promote CRC development. For example, enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis, genotoxic Escherichia coli (pks+ E. coli), and Fusobacterium nucleatum, members of the intestinal microbiota, are highly correlated in CRC. This review describes the roles and mech

There are a number of benign epithelial proliferations in the bladder that may be difficult to distinguish from carcinomas, including urothelial carcinoma and its variants, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. If misdiagnosed, there is the potential for over treatment, with its attendant risk of complications, as well as errors relating to prognostic assessment. In the case of the misdiagnosis of high grade proliferative lesions that mimic invasive carcinoma, unnecessary radical surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy may result. Similarly, the misdiagnosis of lesions that have the appea

The authors report two cases of a peculiar microphlebitis of the intestines, similar to that described by Saraga and Costa quite recently [5]. The patients had undergone hemicolectomy because of evolving ileus caused by cecal polyps or lipohyperplasia, respectively. Pseudomembranous-ulcerative inflammation of the cecum and variously intense lymphocytic infiltrates of numerous small submucosal veins and venules of the intestines were found in both cases. Thrombosis occurred very rarely in the affected vessels, although sometimes it was found in deeper and larger veins. Arteries, lymphatics, mes

The gross and histopathological lesions of naturally-occurring bovine schistosomiasis in the Sudan are detailed. Out of 61 animals examined, 53 were found infected with Schistosoma bovis, showing lesions in their livers, intestinal tracts and other organs. Apart from granulomas, periportal inflammatory infiltration, fibrosis and pigmentation of Kupffer cells, livers of infected cattle revealed peculiar lesions in the form of "nodular sclerosis", medial hypertrophy of portal veins and lymphoid nodule and follicle formation around parasites. In the intestines, variable manifestations of catarrh,

Fecal calprotectin has successfully been widely recommended as a sensitive biomarker of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Recently, we have identified an excellent new fecal biomarker, B cell activating factor (BAFF), as being as effective as fecal calprotectin for diagnosing intestinal inflammation. In this study, a total of 230 patients with abdominal discomfort were prospectively enrolled and fecal samples were collected within 24 h before the endoscopic examinations. We show that fecal BAFF levels were significantly higher in patients with ulcerative colitis (median = 1549 pg/g, P < 0·000

BACKGROUND: Pleuropulmonary blastoma is among the rarest tumors of childhood. Three types have been described: cystic, solid, and mixed. To date, bilateral disease has not been documented.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 5-week-old girl presented with a history of fever. Chest x-ray showed bilateral diffuse cystic lesions. Bowel obstruction developed that required laparotomy. Multiple small bowel polyps were resected. The patient was readmitted 4 months later with deteriorating respiratory status. She underwent sequential thoracotomies for resection of multiple bullae under high-frequency oscillatory

Heterotopia is the presence of normal physiologic tissue in an atypical location. Gastric heterotopia has been described in various locations throughout the gastrointestinal tract, including the small intestine. Gastric heterotopia of the small intestine typically is asymptomatic but may present in several ways with symptoms of obstruction, bleeding, perforation, intussusception, or pain. However, gastric heterotopia is rare beyond the duodenum except for its frequent association with Meckel's diverticulum. This entity should be considered in the differential diagnosis of polypoid lesions pres
