The Symmetry Principle in Catalysis: A Viewpoint of the Pseudo-Jahn-Teller Effect.

A symmetry principle for understanding key elementary reaction steps in catalytic reactions is proposed in this study by employing the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect (PJTE) vibronic coupling theory. The reactivity of elementary reaction steps can be correlated with fractional charge transfer between the catalyst and reactant, which promotes PJTE instability and the symmetry breaking of the adsorbed molecule. Beyond the commonly used adsorption energy, the degree of symmetry deformation of the reactant can serve as an intuitive and important indicator for evaluating the elementary reaction character

The unsolvable problem of traumatic brain injury (or how to stop wasting money in fruitless research).

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a major clinical and scientific challenge, as its significant impact on its victims is not hampered by proper and effective clinical and therapeutic protocols able to target intrinsic pathophysiological mechanisms of short and long-term damage. METHODS: A review of the basic principles underlying TBI and ongoing research, as well as its intrinsic flaws and insurmountable obstacles, is followed by the outline of a more comprehensive approach based on modern systems theory principles. RESULTS: New and counter-intuitive paradigms emerge from this

Integrating disease mapping and flexible scan statistics to identify and visualize spatial clusters.

Accurately characterizing the spatial distribution of diseases is essential for understanding etiology and guiding targeted public health interventions. This study develops an analytical framework integrating disease mapping and spatial scan statistics to identify and validate the spatial clustering patterns of diseases. The framework follows an "exploration-validation-refinement" workflow, combining qualitative visualization with quantitative spatial analysis. Choropleth maps intuitively depict the overall distribution of diseases, providing a basis for identifying potential high-risk areas;

Prosthetic Control by Learning: A Multi-Agent Cooperative Game Framework.

Lower-limb powered prostheses traditionally rely on structured, phase-based controllers designed for specific movement patterns, limiting their adaptability to diverse human motions. This paper presents that powered prosthetic control is a cooperative multi-agent game between the human user and the prosthetic device, as both agents must coordinate their actions actively and adapt their policy reciprocally for successful prosthetic motions. Based on this insight, we develop a model-free reinforcement learning framework that enables the prosthesis to adapt to diverse human movement patterns thro

Bicycle-inspired simple balance control method for quadruped robots in high-speed running.

This paper explores the applicability of bicycle-inspired balance control in a quadruped robot model. Bicycles maintain stability and change direction by intuitively steering the handle, which induces yaw motion in the body frame and generates an inertial effect to support balance. Inspired by this balancing strategy, we implemented a similar mechanism in a quadruped robot model, introducing a yaw trunk joint analogous to a bicycle's steering handle. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves stable high-speed locomotion with robustness against external disturbances and ma

Speed modulations in grid cell information geometry.

Grid cells, with hexagonal spatial firing patterns, are thought critical to the brain's spatial representation. High-speed movement challenges accurate localization as self-location constantly changes. Previous studies of speed modulation focus on individual grid cells, yet population-level noise covariance can significantly impact information coding. Here, we introduce a Gaussian Process with Kernel Regression (GKR) method to study neural population representation geometry. We show that increased running speed dilates the grid cell toroidal-like representational manifold and elevates noise st

Sándor Ferenczi's Psychoanalytic Ground-Breaking Contributions to the Study of Trauma, Therapeutic Technique and Clinical Relationship.

Sándor Ferenczi's contribution recognizes the relevant interpersonal aspects and intersubjective dialogue as central to psychoanalytic theor … the wider psychoanalytic and clinical community in general. Authors analyze Ferenczi's fundamental intuitions on the "confusion of tongues" and trauma, dissociative, and defensive processes, understood as a dysfunctional interpersonal process that undermines the capacity to make sense of experience. Consequently, healing can only occur through new and func …

Gesture encoding in human left precentral gyrus neuronal ensembles.

Understanding the cortical activity patterns driving dexterous upper limb motion has the potential to benefit a broad clinical population living with limited mobility through the development of novel brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. The present study examines the activity of ensembles of motor cortical neurons recorded using microelectrode arrays in the dominant hemisphere of two BrainGate clinical trial participants with cervical spinal cord injury as they attempted to perform a set of 48 different hand gestures. Although each participant displayed a unique organization of their res

Artificial intelligence diagnosis and heatmap agent for mitral valve prolapse using 3D cine echocardiography.

The detection rate of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) has been increased by using 3D echocardiography. It would be clinically meaningful for accurate assessment of prolapse histology with advanced deep learning algorithms. However, recent studies mainly focus on automatic measurement and reconstruction of cardiac structures using voxel data, while seriously neglecting the automatic diagnosis and visualization using cine data. To address the gap, we propose an artificial intelligence agent to study diagnosis and heatmap for MVP. We include 481 cardiac cycles (8422 frames) from 151 subjects. Our age

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Chronic Liver Diseases and Liver Transplantation.

In hepatology, pattern recognition in laboratory data and clinical characteristics is the hallmark of clinical care. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools, like machine or deep learning and large language models, provide interesting mechanisms for facilitating care advancement. The complexity and diversity of data, as well as genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, all contribute to individualized recommendations intuitively made by clinicians for patients with liver disease. AI tools provide the opportunity to train on high-volume data and simulate the clinician's subconscious thought pro

Posterior lower uterine segment caesarean hysterotomy, an innovative surgical technique to avoid classical hysterotomy: Case report and discussion.

A 40-year-old patient underwent laparotomy at term gestation for a 25-cm lower abdominal mass arising from the lateral wall of the uterus, with an extensive secondary blood supply from the lower uterus and bladder, preventing access to the anterior lower uterine segment. The gravid uterus was exteriorised over the patient's thighs. A transverse posterior lower uterine segment hysterotomy was performed and a healthy 2920 g baby was delivered. A copper T 380A intrauterine device was placed at the fundus and the insertion tube passed through the cervix for retrieval after the surgery. A Foley cat

Building capability and community through cyber-incident response exercises.

While a natural disaster or related threat may impact an organisation at some point, it is more likely (even inevitable) that it will be the victim of a cyber attack. The solution to being better prepared for these imminent attacks is to undertake more lightweight and frequent incident response (IR) exercises to help build capabilities and community through a tighter, recurring cycle of planning, conducting and assessing. To boost the facilitation of IR exercises, organisations must leverage the established relationships between business continuity management (BCM) or resilience staff (both of

Monitoring of spontaneous pneumothorax using electrical impedance tomography: A case report.

Pneumothorax is an emergency in thoracic surgeries and respiratory medicine. A technique is warranted for real-time monitoring of pneumothorax at the bedside so that rapid diagnosis and timely intervention can be achieved. We report herein a case in which electrical impedance tomography (EIT) was employed at the bedside to monitor lung ventilation of a patient with spontaneous pneumothorax during treatment. It was found that the affected side/healthy side ventilation ratio and global inhomogeneity were strongly correlated with the severity of pneumothorax. The use of EIT allowed intuitive obse

Development and validation of a risk prediction model for mild cognitive impairment in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is steadily increasing among elderly people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This study aimed to create and validate a predictive model based on a nomogram. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected sociodemographic characteristics, T2DM-related factors, depression, and levels of social support from 530 older adults with T2DM. We used LASSO regression and multifactorial logistic regression to determine the predictors of the model. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated using calibration curves, receiver operating characteris

Head and neck reconstruction in the vessel depleted neck using robot-assisted harvesting of the internal mammary vessels.

We report a novel technique of robot-assisted harvesting of the internal mammary vessels to provide effective recipient vessels in a patient with bilateral vessel depleted neck (VDN). A 44-year-old with a Notani grade III osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the anterior mandible underwent robot-assisted (Da Vinci® Surgical System, Intuitive Surgical) harvesting of the left internal mammary vessels (LIMA, LIMV). Reconstruction of the mandibular defect was done with a virtually planned composite fibular free flap and microvascular anastomosis of the peroneal vessels to the LIMA and LIMV. Successful reco

Composition and functional profiles of gut microbiota reflect the treatment stage, severity, and etiology of acute pancreatitis.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a type of digestive system disease with high mortality. Previous studies have shown that gut microbiota can participate in the development and treatment of acute pancreatitis by affecting the host's metabolism. However, fewer studies acquired metagenomic sequencing data to associate species to functions intuitively and performed longitudinal analysis to explore how gut microbiota influences the development of AP. We followed 20 AP patients to generate longitudinal gut microbiota profiles and activity during disease and studied the differences in intestinal flora unde

Realizing Upper Extremity Bionic Limbs: Leveraging Neuroprosthetic Control Strategies.

Innovations in prosthetic devices and neuroprosthetic control strategies have opened new frontiers for the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals undergoing amputation. Commercial prosthetic devices are now available with sophisticated electrical and mechanical components that can closely replicate the functions of the human musculoskeletal system. However, to truly recognize the potential of such prosthetic devices and develop the next generation of bionic limbs, a highly reliable prosthetic device control strategy is required. In the past few years, refined surgical techniques have enab

Defending the de dicto approach to the non-identity problem.

Is it wrong to create a blind child, for example by in vitro fertilization, if you could create a sighted child instead? Intuitively many people believe it is wrong, but this belief is difficult to justify. When there is a possibility to create and select either 'blind' or 'sighted' embryos choosing a set of 'blind' embryos seems to harm no-one since choosing 'sighted' embryos would create a different child altogether. So when the parents choose 'blind' embryos, they give some specific individual a life that is the only option for her. Because her life is worth living (as blind peoples' lives

A recombinase polymerase amplification-SYBR Green I assay for the rapid and visual detection of Brucella.

Brucellosis is a zoonosis caused by Brucella, which poses a great threat to human health and animal husbandry. Pathogen surveillance is an important measure to prevent brucellosis, but the traditional method is time-consuming and not suitable for field applications. In this study, a recombinase polymerase amplification-SYBR Green I (RPAS) assay was developed for the rapid and visualized detection of Brucella in the field by targeting BCSP31 gene, a conserved marker. The method was highly specific without any cross-reactivity with other common bacteria and its detection limit was 2.14 × 104 CFU

A theoretical study on the on-off phosphorescence of novel Pt(ii)/Pt(iv)-bisphenylpyridinylmethane complexes.

An in-depth theoretical study on the Pt(ii)/Pt(iv)-bisphenylpyridinylmethane complexes was carried out, which focused on the geometric/electronic structures, excitation procedures, on-off phosphorescence mechanisms, and structure-optical performance relationships. The key roles of the linkages (LK) connected in the middle of phenylpyridines were carefully investigated using multiple wavefunction analysis methods, such as non-covalent interaction (NCI) visualizations and natural bond orbital (NBO) studies. The phosphorescence-off phenomenon was considered by hole-electron analysis and visualiza
