BACKGROUND: Dantrolene is the only known effective treatment for malignant hyperthermia. However, its effects on diaphragm muscle during postnatal maturation remain unknown.
METHODS: The effects of dantrolene (10(-8) to 10(-4) M) were investigated in vitro on diaphragm muscle strips in adult rats and in postnatal rats aged 3, 10, and 17 days, and compared with those of ryanodine (10(-8) to 10(-6) M). The authors studied contraction and relaxation under isotonic and isometric conditions (29 degrees C, Krebs-Henseleit solution, tetanic stimulation at 50 Hz). Data are mean +/- SD.

Burkholderia pseudomallei and pathogenic Leptospira in contaminated drinking water can cause melioidosis and leptospirosis, respectively. Here, we evaluated their survival in beverages. INTRODUCTION: Integrity of the great saphenous vein (GSV) endothelium is the most important key element for long-term patency rate of grafts in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). Storage solutions play an important role in maintaining viability of vein endothelium. Diminished nitric oxide (NO) because of endothelial dysfunction may facilitate vascular inflammation and formation of atherosclerotic plaque.
AIM: So, we decided to find a reasonable alternative preservative solution instead of heparinized blood (HB) by measuring NO concentration with Griess assay.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we prepared acetated-Ringer containing 10% dextran, and evaluated its efficacy in a rat model of acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH).
METHODS: Under sevoflurane anesthesia, 21 rats (350-400 g) underwent ANH. In all rats 10 ml of blood was withdrawn, and they were infused with 10 ml of acetated-Ringer containing 10% dextran (Group-A, n = 11) or lactated-Ringer containing 10% dextran (Group-L, n = 10). For each rat, ANH procedure took 20 minutes. Hemodynamics and arterial blood gas data before and after ANH were compared.

The authors review current views on the treatment of acute rhinitis (AR) in infants and present their experience in AR treatment of 30 infants aged from 3 days to 1 year. Combined treatment with Physiomer baby quickly eradicated inflammation. The drug eliminates crusts and nasal discharge allowing application of other medication on a clear surface of nasal mucosa. As a result, medication becomes more affective and accelerates recovery. A convenient tip is well adapted for the nostrils. Administration of medicine by spray provides optimal lavage of the nasal cavity.

Although most poisonous snakebites in Europe tend to be relatively minor and uncomplicated, the present case highlights the need to regard all viper bites as life-threatening accidents, before proved otherwise by a medical professional.

Amnioinfusion is an intrapartum technique that is not usually attempted in twin gestations. This report describes infusion of normal saline into the amniotic sacs of three twin gestations with oligohydramnios. All the twins were safely delivered vaginally. No untoward effects were noted. Ultrasound is advised following amnioinfusion to assess the increase in the amniotic fluid volume.

Proximal and distal small intestinal segments of the rat were perfused in situ at two different rates with isotonic solutions containing glucose in concentrations ranging from 25 to 600 mg/100 ml. Absorption was measured as glucose disappearance rate from the lumen. Glucose absorption had not previously been studied at intraluminal concentrations above and below blood glucose.
