Effect of Socioeconomic Status and Ethnicity on Glycemic Control in Arab and Jewish Youth with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

OBJECTIVES: Research and theory suggests that socioeconomic status may affect diabetes control. We investigated the effect of socioeconomic … .004). In multivariate analysis, disease duration (P=0.010) and ethnicity (P=0.034 for Arabs versus Jews) were independently associated with HbA1c. CONCLUSIONS: Both Arab and Jewish children failed to meet HbA1c goals, but this effect was significantly greater for Arabs. Ethnicity remained a predictor of failure even following adjustment for potential …

Exploring mental health consequences of childhood abuse and the relevance of religiosity.

Although childhood abuse is an established risk factor for mental health problems in adulthood, there is relatively little empirical evidence concerning intervening factors that may mitigate the risk. One potentially protective factor is religiosity. A unique opportunity to explore religiosity's relevance exists with a community-based sample of adult Jewish women that includes sizable subsamples of both rigorously devout ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) and nonreligious Secular Jews. A global measure of any childhood abuse (ACA) includes sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse. Mental health is assess…

Predictors of short stature in Israeli children aged 6-7 years: a retrospective cohort study.

There are differences in the rates of short stature (WHO height-z score < -2SD) between the various sectors in Israeli children aged 6-7 years, with higher rates in the ultraorthodox Jewish population. We aimed to: (a) Compare the anthropometric data at 0-2 years of age and the obstetric and demographic data of children with short stature at 6-7 years of age with those of children with normal height. (b) Assess risk factors for short stature at the age of 6-7 years. (c) Evaluate the impact of clinical and socioeconomic factors on linear growth from birth to the age of 6-7 years. This was a ret

Jewish Students' Experiences of Antisemitism in Higher Education Settings and Daily Occupations.

An alarming increase in antisemitism compromises Jewish students' sense of safety and may result in occupational injustice. This study aimed to explore Jewish students' exposure to antisemitism and its impact on their mental health and daily occupations. A survey about exposure to antisemitism, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder seven-item scale, and the Brief Resilience Scale were completed by 147 university students nationally; 57.3% reported direct experiences with antisemitism and 63.4% were exposed as bystanders. This exposure jeopardized students' sense of safety, occupations such as socia

Ancestral patterns of recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa mutations in Hispanic populations suggest sephardic ancestry.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a rare genodermatosis caused by mutations in the gene coding for type VII collagen (COL7A1). More than 800 different pathogenic mutations in COL7A1 have been described to date; however, the ancestral origins of many of these mutations have not been precisely identified. In this study, 32 RDEB patient samples from the Southwestern United States, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia carrying common mutations in the COL7A1 gene were investigated to determine the origins of these mutations and the extent to which shared ancestry contributes to disease pr

The healthcare worker at risk during the COVID-19 pandemic: a Jewish ethical perspective.

The current COVID-19 pandemic has raised many questions and dilemmas for modern day ethicists and healthcare providers. Are physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers morally obligated to put themselves in harm's way and treat patients during a pandemic, occurring a great risk to themselves, their families and potentially to other patients? The issue was relevant during the 1918 influenza epidemic and more recently severe acute respiratory syndrome epidemic in 2003. Since the risk to the healthcare workers was great, there was tension between the ethical duty and responsibility to treat a

Validation of "Wound QoL" Hebrew version disease-specific questionnaire for patients with lower extremity ulcerations.

The slow healing process and high recurrence rate of lower extremity ulcerations (LEU) impose a considerable medical and economic burden and affect quality of life (QoL). Analyses of LEU-related QoL in Israel are limited due to lack of a validated Hebrew disease-specific evaluation instrument. The aim of this study was to validate the disease-specific Hebrew "Wound QoL" questionnaire. The validation of the "Wound QoL" disease-specific instrument, translated from English to Hebrew, was based on a comparison with the valid Hebrew version of the SF12v.2 health-related questionnaire. The convenien

Ultrasound findings provide clues to investigate founder mutations expressed as runs of homozygosity in chromosomal microarray studies.

OBJECTIVES: Chromosomal microarray analysis is effectively applied prenatally to detect copy number changes. Single nucleotide polymorphism … inct nuclear families in which the parents shared a similar ethnicity (either Ashkenazi or Bukharan Jews) albeit no reported consanguinity were assessed. We found no copy number changes; however, by evaluating regions of homozygosity, we were able to reveal relevant candidate gene for the specific phenotype for each fetus. Using the INGD led to targete …

Reluctance Versus Urge to Disclose Child Maltreatment: The Impact of Multi-Type Maltreatment.

Child maltreatment is a major public health issue in Israel. According to a recent Israeli national epidemiological survey, approximately half of Jewish and Arab girls and boys between the ages 12 and 17 experienced at least one type of child maltreatment, at any severity level. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of multi-type maltreatment on Israeli children and youth survivors' reluctance versus urge to disclose; with the effects of gender, age, and ethnicity taken into account. The study is important since non-disclosure has deleterious effects in terms of con

The effect of a 25-hour fast during the Day of Atonement on preterm delivery.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of the Day of Atonement fast (a 25-hour Jewish fast), on preterm delivery. METHODS: A comprehensive analysis of all deliveries during the Day of Atonement and during the corresponding day a week earlier, between the years 1988 and 2011, was performed. Preterm delivery was defined as delivery before 37 completed weeks of gestation. Data on fasting status was deduced from the ethnicity (as only Jewish parturients fast during the Day of Atonement). Multivariable logistic regression model was used to control for confounders. RESULTS: During the Day of Atonement

Type 1 Gaucher disease: significant disease manifestations in "asymptomatic" homozygotes.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 Gaucher disease (GD), an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease, is most prevalent in the Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) population. Experts have suggested that up to two-thirds of AJ homozygotes for the common mutation (N370S) are asymptomatic throughout life and never come to medical attention. However, there are no systematic studies of N370S homozygotes to support this presumption. METHODS: Prenatal carrier screening of 8069 AJ adults for 6 common GD mutations was performed. Gaucher disease manifestations in 37 previously unrecognized homozygotes were assessed by clinical

An epidemiological survey of Echinococcus granulosus and other helminths in animal populations in northern Israel.

In a survey carried out during the period May 1995 to November 1996, in communities of various ethnic groups in northern Israel, 206 dogs were examined for Echinococcus granulosus and other intestinal helminth parasites by arecoline hydrobromide purges and the coproantigen-ELISA. The arecoline test was performed close to the owners' homes, using plastic sheets secured to the ground. From 56 dogs examined in the Muslim town of Tamra, six (10.7%) were found to be infected with E. granulosus. Four of them also had a mixed infection of Taenia hydatigena and Dipylidium caninum (two dogs), and the r
