PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to observe the histologic characteristics of adhesions in the upper joint compartment of the temporomandibular joint and investigate the mechanism of genesis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During arthroscopic surgery, we obtained 42 biopsy specimens of different grades of adhesions, ranging from grade I to grade IV, from 21 joints in 21 patients with internal derangement. Two biopsy specimens from each temporomandibular joint were obtained in this study; one was immediately fixed in 4% formalin and examined under a light microscope, and the other was fixed in 2% glu…

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between temporomandibular joint (TMJ) effusion and TMJ disorders is controversial. The frequency of TMJ effusion has varied as shown in previous studies. Furthermore, though some authors have suggested a correlation between TMJ effusion and pain, others question the relationship. In order to clarify the relationship, it is necessary to quantify the degree of effusion and thoroughly investigate its relationship to other factors. The purpose of this study was to analyze the amount of TMJ fluid present in joints with TMJ disorders and to see how TMJ effusion is relate…

STUDY DESIGN: A case report.
OBJECTIVES: To report and discuss a rare case of epidural hematoma that was considered to be formed as a result of idiopathic bleeding occurring at the facet joint (joint apoplexy).
SUMMARY OF THE BACKGROUND DATA: Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma is a relatively rare condition. According to a review article of 199 spontaneous spinal epidural hematomas in the last 2 decades, the majority of these conditions are thought to result from a rupture of the epidural vascular network. Recently, a hemorrhagic lumbar synovial cyst and a hematoma occurring from the ligam

BACKGROUND: Conventional wisdom holds that hyperextension of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb is secondary to degenerative subluxation of the trapeziometacarpal joint as occurs in osteoarthritis. We propose that a hypermobile metacarpophalangeal joint may have a causative role in the development of primary osteoarthritis at the base of the thumb by concentrating forces on the palmar aspect of the trapeziometacarpal joint.
METHODS: Twenty fresh-frozen cadaveric forearm specimens were obtained post mortem from donors with no history of connective-tissue disease. Each specimen was cate

During arthroscopy of the knee, large volumes of fluid are required. Cadaver studies have indicated that flexion of the knee may cause rupture of the joint capsule during arthroscopy. To illustrate this, a rare case is presented with rupture of the posterior part of the capsule during arthroscopy with extrusion of a joint mouse. This possibility should be considered when the joint mouse cannot be found inside the joint during arthroscopy.

Proper joint function has a significant impact on people's quality of life. Joints are the point of connection between two or more bones and consist of at least three elements: joint surfaces, the joint capsule, and the joint cavity. Joint diseases are a serious social problem. Risk factors for the development of these diseases include overweight and obesity, gender, and intestinal microbiome disorders. Another factor that is considered to influence joint diseases is trace elements. Under normal conditions, elements such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), iodine (I), manganese (Mn), zinc …

INTRODUCTION: Calcium metabolism dysregulation in the setting of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) mediated chondrocalcinosis is implicated in joint pain, a key element in the decision regarding arthroplasty for osteoarthritis. The relationship between hypercalcemia and joint pain, before and after arthroplasty, is unknown. This study investigates the association between preoperative hypercalcemia and postoperative outcomes following total knee (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients who underwent initial elective THA or TKA. Pa

BACKGROUND: Destruction of the radiocarpal and midcarpal joints causes loss of wrist motion, pain, and reduced grip strength. A novel technique for radiocarpal reconstruction is presented.
METHODS: Two patients who had radiocarpal and midcarpal destruction and osteoarthritis underwent reconstruction using simultaneous bilateral microvascular second metatarsophalangeal joint transfer. The insetting was performed, inverting the distal-proximal orientation of both metatarsophalangeal joints and fixing them with two 2.0 screws in proximal and Kirschner wires in distal.
RESULTS: Radiocarpal exten…

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is common in children, with an increasing awareness of the condition in all healthcare professionals. TMJ involvement presents a challenge in both diagnosis and treatment, as late presentation can still occur as the disease often develops asymptomatically. This can result in facial deformity and/or functional difficulties including obstructive sleep apnoea. Early diagnosis is therefore essential, requiring a high index of clinical suspicion coupled with the judicious use of gadolinium contrast magnetic resonance imaging (

Basal joint arthroscopy is one of the more recent evolutions of small joint arthroscopy in upper limb surgery. Conventional arthroscopy equipment is generally sufficient to perform these procedures without any specific adaptation. Arthroscopic exploration of the trapeziometacarpal joint is performed through 1R, 1U portals with the addition of a thenar portal in some indications. In the context of basal joint arthritis, we can distinguish diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic indications for arthroscopy. Diagnostic indications are the assessment of painful post-traumatic basal joint lesions of

Total temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement has been documented as a viable option for the management of end-stage TMJ disease, but data on long-term outcomes have been reported for only two established systems: TMJ Concepts, and Zimmer Biomet. Other devices are now emerging globally, but reports of preclinical laboratory and clinical outcomes are limited. We retrieved information on the design, material composition, preclinical laboratory tests, regulatory status, and clinical outcomes of new TMJ replacement systems from PubMed and Google, and from personal correspondence with surgeons wo

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate evidence about the prevalence of degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed search on electronic databases and gray literature from their inception to January 2018. Studies reporting prevalence data of DJD on TMJ were included. DJD was assessed through clinical and imaging diagnosis. Studies risk of bias was evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data.
RESULTS: From 1082 studies, 32 were identified, and the sample size i…
