CASE HISTORY: A 9-year-old, spayed, female Golden Retriever presented with an 18-month history of small spots of opacification on the left c … ent to three smaller pink masses on the left cornea. The corneal tumour was resected by superficial keratectomy. The cornea was treated with topical peginterferon alfa-2a drops post-operatively.
PATHOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR FINDINGS: The mass was histologically diagnosed as an incompletely excised corneal pigmented squamous cell carcinoma (pSCC) displaying bot …

Laser vision correction is a safe and effective method of reducing spectacle dependence. Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Laser In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), and Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) can accurately correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Although these procedures are nearing optimization in terms of their ability to produce a desired refractive target, the long term cellular responses of the cornea to these procedures can cause patients to regress from the their ideal postoperative refraction. In many cases, refractive regression requires follow up enhancement su…

Iatrogenic keratectasia is induced thinning and protrusion of the cornea after laser refractive surgery. Known risk factors include an excessively thin postoperative residual stromal bed, a thicker flap, or preoperatively undetected evidence of preexisting subclinical keratoconus. The rate of post-refractive ectasia in eyes without identifiable preoperative risk factors is 20 per 100 000 eyes for photorefractive keratectomy, 90 per 100 000 eyes for laser in situ keratomileusis, and 11 per 100 000 eyes for small incision lenticule extraction. Traditional screening tools for preoperative risk in…

BACKGROUND: Sterile infiltrates have been reported as a possible complication following photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). They have not been reported following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). We review a case of fleeting, sterile peripheral corneal infiltrates following LASIK.
METHODS: A 53 year old patient developed peripheral, sterile corneal infiltrates along the edge of the primary flap following LASIK. This was successfully managed with topical antibiotics and corticosteroids without permanent sequelae.
RESULTS: Sterile peripheral corneal infiltrates are now a known complication …

To compare the central corneal thickness (CCT) treated with small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK), or laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) for myopia correction. This was a retrospective case series study. Patients who had completed 1-year follow-up after receiving SMILE, FS-LASIK, or LASEK at our hospital from January 2019 to July 2021 were included. Pentacam pachymetry was performed to measure the CCT. The predicted CCT reduction was obtained through laser platform. The measured CCT reduction was defined as th

BACKGROUND: Due to the risk of amblyopia congenital and infantile corneal opacities have a narrow therapeutic window, frequently with a complex surgical treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The present study gives an overview of the current treatment options for congenital and infantile corneal opacities.
METHODS: The results of a literature search are presented and own clinical data and examples are shown.
RESULTS: In children ophthalmologic operations are surgically more demanding and the prognosis is generally worse. Surgical options include phototherapeutic keratectomy, crosslinking, corneal sutures, …

BACKGROUND: To assess the effects of warm compress (WC) on tear film lipid layer, blink pattern and Meibomian gland function in patients with dry eye following femtosecond laser small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK).
METHODS: We enrolled 37 eyes of 37 participants, each with dry eye for more than 2 years following SMILE (25 eyes) or LASEK (12 eyes). WC was performed using a spontaneously heating eye mask. Tear film break-up time (TBUT), tear film lipid layer thickness (TFLLT), blink pattern, Meibomian secretory function scores (MGS

Visual rehabilitation in keratoconus is a challenge, notably because of the significant irregular astigmatism and optical aberrations that it induces. Many surgical techniques have been developed in addition to, or in the case of failure of, spectacles and rigid gas permeable contact lenses: intracorneal ring segments, intraocular lenses, excimer laser and, as a last resort, keratoplasty. Excimer laser photoablates the cornea, allowing remodeling of its surface. There are various treatment modes (wavefront-optimized, wavefront-guided and topography-guided), allowing performance of a customized

The leading topic of this particular paper is dedicated to available surgical options for refractive eye disorders treatment including surgery of cornea and intraocular surgery. Corneal Surgery includes laser refractive surgery - LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis), FemtoLASIK (Femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK), PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy). This article describes relevant principles of particular procedures, indications and possible contraindications. The chapter dedicated to corneal implants provides information about ICRS (Intrastromal Corneal Rings Segment) and Inlays (corne…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a novel technique for the correction of postoperative astigmatism after penetrating keratoplasty with the use of the femtosecond laser creating astigmatic keratotomies (femto-AK) in the scope of a retrospective case series.
METHODS: Clinical data of ten eyes of nine patients with high residual astigmatism after penetrating keratoplasty undergoing paired femto-AK using a 60-kHz femtosecond laser (IntraLase™, AMO) were analyzed. A new software algorithm was used to create paired arcuate cuts deep into the donor corneal button with different c

Recurrent corneal erosions in both traumatic and basal membrane dystrophy-associated conditions seem to show a similar pathogenesis for abnormal adhesion between corneal epithelium and stroma. The purpose of each conservative or surgical treatment is fast healing without any infections or recurrences. This paper compares the different excimer laser treatment options with emphasis on the so-called aggressive PTK. A total of 50 eyes of 50 patients with recurrent corneal erosions after mechanical trauma or with epithelial basement membrane dystrophy were treated with aggressive PTK after the seco

The increasing number of patients with myopia who had an excimer operation arouses among retinal specialists and refraction surgeons the question whether laser operation can cause or accelerate retinal damage and initiate a motion of the retina. During the last 4 years the authors treated 5 patients with a motion of the retina who were previously subjected to excimer laser surgery on account of severe myopia. The laser procedures were implemented in different departments and then the patients were referred to us on account of complications. Poorer results and a poorer prognosis were recorded i
