BACKGROUNDS/AIMS: No study has so far been conducted to clarify whether the presence of hyperbilirubinemia is detrimental to liver and renal functions. Transformation of arachidonic acid into prostaglandins was investigated in the basilar artery by incubating sections of artery with carbon-14-labeled arachidonic acid. We have identified two novel mutant alleles in the transacylase (E2) gene of the human branched-chain alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase (BCKAD) complex in 6 of 38 patients with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). Congenital childhood lactic acidaemia is a poorly understood group of genetic diseases. The most common underlying inherited defect encountered in this group is deficiency of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) combined with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in the diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism in children.
METHODS: Amino acids and acylcarnitines in the dry blood filter papers were tested by MS/MS, and the organic acid profiles in urea were tested by GC-MS among 4981 children suspected to be with inborn errors of metabolism from more than 100 hospitals in China. A review is presented on different categories of compounds that have been studied for the inhibition of the HIV-1 integrase to develop anti-HIV agents. These compounds are: oligonucleotides (double-stranded, triplex, and G-quartet), curcumin analogues, polyhydroxylated aromatic compounds, diketo acids, caffeoyl- and galloyl - based compounds, hydrazides and amides, tetracyclines, and depsides and depsidones. BACKGROUND: Secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) plays a pivotal role in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This enzyme seems an interesting target to reduce surfactant catabolism and lung tissue inflammation.
