A child with adrenocortical adenoma accompanied by congenital hemihypertrophy: report of a case.

We report herein the findings of a 7-year-old male child with a ruptured adrenocortical adenoma and congenital hemihypertrophy which was incidentally detected after suffering a trauma. A review of 21 pediatric cases of adrenocortical neoplasms in the literature was made. The patient showed precocious puberty such as pubis and advanced bone age, but an endocrinological examination revealed no definite abnormalities. The right adrenal tumor with hematoma was resected after these evaluations. Adrenocortical adenoma is considered to occur more frequently in female children. However, the incidence

Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta like activity of intracranial meningioma and its effect on cell growth.

Polypeptides, characterized by their ability to confer a transformed phenotype on an untransformed indicator cell have been isolated directly from surgical specimens of intracranial meningioma by using an acid/ethanol extraction procedure. Transforming activity in meningeal cells was based on the ability to induce NRK 49F rat kidney fibroblasts to form colonies in soft agar. This polypeptide was separated by gel filtration into two fragments of 15 and 40 kilodalton (kDa) molecular weight. Among other cases of brain neoplasms, one case of glioblastoma multiforme had moderate TGF-beta activity,

The selective inhibitory effect of hyperthermia on the metabolism and growth of malignant cells.

Hyperthermia (42° C.) exerted an inhibitory effect on the O(2) uptake of rabbit VX2 carcinoma cells in vitro, and led to a decrease in viability and growth potential of the cells, as measured by their ability to produce tumours in rabbits. Anaerobic glycolysis of the tumour cells was unaltered by hyperthermia. Respiration and anaerobic glycolysis of normal rabbit liver, kidney and red blood cells were unaffected by the elevated temperature. Local heat was applied to established VX2 tumours in vivo, with a subsequent reduction in tumour size in all cases, the most effective therapy regime being

A rare case of "Brown tumor" of the axis with parathyroid adenoma and tertiary hyperparathyroidism.

"Brown tumors (BTs)" of the spine are benign rare lesions, seen in about 5%-13% of all patients with chronic hyperparathyroidism (HPT). They are not true neoplasms and are also known as osteitis fibrosa cystica or occasionally osteoclastoma. Radiological presentations are often misleading and may mimic other common lesions such as metastasis. A strong clinical suspicion is therefore necessary, especially in the background of chronic kidney disease with HPT and parathyroid adenoma. Surgical spinal fixation in case of instability due to pathological fracture may be required along with excision o

Lamivudine induced pure red cell aplasia and HIV-1 drug resistance-associated mutations: a case report.

Adverse effects linked to antiretroviral therapy (ART) may contribute to poor adherence on the patient's side. Consequently, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) drug resistance mutations could emerge, negatively impacting the body's immune system. Meanwhile, severe immunosuppression can lead to several conditions, including anemia. The cause of anemia in HIV infection is multifactorial, and can be mainly explained by deleterious direct effects of the virus on the bone marrow, and opportunistic infections such as Parvovirus B19. Other causes include blood loss resulting from neoplasms and gastro

Microvascular Flow Imaging: A State-of-the-Art Review of Clinical Use and Promise.

Vascular imaging with color and power Doppler is a useful tool in the assessment of various disease processes. Assessment of blood flow, from infarction and ischemia to hyperemia, in organs, neoplasms, and vessels, is used in nearly every US investigation. Recent developments in this area are sensitive to small-vessel low velocity flow without use of intravenous contrast agents, known as microvascular flow imaging (MVFI). MVFI is more sensitive in detection of small vessels than color, power, and spectral Doppler, reducing the need for follow-up contrast-enhanced US (CEUS), CT, and MRI, except

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 Protein Is Overexpressed in a Wide Range of Human Tumour Types: A Systematic Tissue Microarray Study on >15,000 Tumours.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a regulator in the renin-angiotensin system. ACE2 expression was analysed immunohistochemically in 15,306 samples from 119 tumour types and in 608 samples of 76 normal tissue types. In normal tissue, ACE2 was most abundant in testis and corpus luteum, kidney, small intestine and capillaries of selected organs. At least an occasional weak ACE2 positivity of tumour cells was seen in 83 of 119 (70%) tumour types. ACE2 tumour cell positivity was particularly frequent in papillary (94%) and clear cell (86%) renal cell carcinoma, colorectal adenocarcinoma (8

All bone metastases are not created equal: Revisiting treatment resistance in renal cell carcinoma.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common malignancy of the kidney, representing 80-90% of renal neoplasms, and is associated with a five-year overall survival rate of approximately 74%. The second most common site of metastasis is bone. As patients are living longer due to new RCC targeting agents and immunotherapy, RCC bone metastases (RCCBM) treatment failure is more prevalent. Bone metastasis formation in RCC is indicative of a more aggressive disease and worse prognosis. Osteolysis is a prominent feature and causes SRE, including pathologic fractures. Bone metastasis from other tumors

Oncogenic properties and signaling basis of the PAX8-GLIS3 fusion gene.

Hyalinizing trabecular tumors of the thyroid are rare and mostly benign epithelial neoplasms of follicular cell origin, which have recently been shown to be underpinned by the PAX8-GLIS3 fusion gene. In our study, we sought to investigate the potential oncogenic mechanisms of the PAX8-GLIS3 fusion gene. Forced expression of PAX8-GLIS3 was found to increase proliferation, clonogenic potential and migration of human nonmalignant thyroid (Nthy-ori 3-1) and embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cells. Moreover, in xenografts, Nthy-ori 3-1 PAX8-GLIS3 expressing cells generated significantly larger and more pr

Erdheim Chester disease in a patient with Burkitt lymphoma: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Erdheim Chester disease (ECD) is a rare, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by widespread tissue infiltration by CD68-positive, CD1a-negative foamy histiocytes. ECD can be difficult to identify, and diagnosis relies on the presence of histiocytes with certain histologic and immunophenotypic features in an appropriate clinical and radiologic setting. Clinical signs and symptoms are variable depending on which organ systems are involved. Most patients have at least skeletal involvement with bone pain as well as fatigue. Other common manifestations include diabetes insipi

Mucinous cystadenoma with calcification arising from renal pelvis radiologically resembled renal calculus with hydronephrosis: report of a rare case and review of the literature.

Primary mucinous cystic tumors occurring in the renal pelvis or the entire pyelocaliceal system are uncommon. Most are mucinous cystadenomas and less frequently mucinous cystadenocarcinomas. In fact, the publications on these neoplasms are limited to a few cases. Because mucinous cystadenomas of kidney are exceedingly rare, little is known about their natural history, pathogenesis and clinicopathologic features. Herein, we describe 1 case of mucinous cystadenoma arising from the renal pelvis with calcification, which resembled hydronephrosis with renal calculus radiologically. The patient pres

Imaging of tuberous sclerosis complex: a pictorial review.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetically determined hamartomatous neurocutaneous disease with high phenotypic variability. TSC is characterized by widespread hamartomas and benign, or rarely malignant, neoplasms distributed in several organs throughout the body, especially in the brain, skin, retina, kidney, heart, and lung. Common manifestations include cortical tubers, subependymal nodules, white matter abnormalities, retinal abnormalities, cardiac rhabdomyoma, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, renal angiomyolipoma, and skin lesions. The wide range of organs affected by the disease implies

Spectrum of renal involvement in hematolymphoid neoplasms: Renal biopsy findings of 12 cases.

Spectrum of causes for renal dysfunction in patients with hematolymphoid malignancy (excluding plasma cell dyscrasia) is varied. A retrospective evaluation of "native" renal biopsies referred to our institute during the period from January 2010 to December 2013 revealed 12 cases. Age ranged between 7 and 69 (median 54.5) years. All patients were males. The neoplasms included non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Burkitt's lymphoma, intravascular lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and chronic myeloid leukemia. Proteinuria was noted in 66% of the patients (nep

Concurrent angiomyolipomas and renal cell neoplasms in patients without tuberous sclerosis: a retrospective study.

Synchronous renal cell neoplasms (RCNs) and angiomyolipomas (AML) occurring in the same kidney are rare. The aim of this retrospective study is to investigate the incidence and clinicopathological features of concurrent AML and RCN in patients without tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Partial and radical nephrectomy specimens with a diagnosis of RCN and AML from 1995 to May 2013 were reviewed. Cases were assessed for histological subtype of AML and RCN, topographic relationship between the AML and the RCN, and clinical characteristics. A total of 565 RCNs and 19 AMLs were identified. Expression and function of renal and hepatic organic anion transporters in extrahepatic cholestasis.

Obstructive jaundice occurs in patients suffering from cholelithiasis and from neoplasms affecting the pancreas and the common bile duct. The absorption, distribution and elimination of drugs are impaired during this pathology. Prolonged cholestasis may alter both liver and kidney function. Lactam antibiotics, diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, several antiviral drugs as well as endogenous compounds are classified as organic anions. The hepatic and renal organic anion transport pathways play a key role in the pharmacokinetics of these compounds. It has been demonstrated that acu

Immunohistochemical study as a tool in differential diagnosis of pediatric malignant rhabdoid tumor.

Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRTs) are aggressive childhood neoplasms, occurring mainly in the kidney and brain. We describe 2 unusual cases of extrarenal and noncranial location (liver and soft tissue with dissemination) mimicking hepatoblastoma, neuroblastoma or Ewing sarcoma. Both cases revealed a polyphenotypic profile, combined with cytokeratin, vimentin, and CD99 expression. INI1/BAF-47 showed negative protein nuclear expression in both cases, suggesting a diagnosis of MRT. An extensive immunohistochemical panel was performed to exclude pediatric tumors reminiscent of MRT. The genetic stud

BSBM-04 MULTIPLE MYELOMA METASTASIS TO THE PINEAL GLAND: A CASE REPORT FROM LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK, USA

Abstract BACKGROUND Multiple myeloma (MM) is one of the most common bone cancers in older adults, occurring as a neoplasm that emerges from a clone of differentiated plasma cells, ultimately resulting in proliferation of a monoclonal immunoglobulin. The plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow, often producing osseous lesions. Although rare, extramedullary proliferation of these plasma cells can occur. Extramedullary proliferation has been identified in 10-16% of MM patients, most often in the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and kidney, but has been identified in every organ system. RESULTS We p

Cryoglobulinemia in kidney transplant recipients.

The aim of this study was to assess the presence of cryoglobulins, the constitution of the cryoprecipitate, as well as the possible etiology and clinical features in kidney transplant recipients. We excluded patients with clinical or laboratory evidence of autoimmune, liver or neoplasm disease, infections, blood transfusions or immunizations in the previous 3 months. Detection of cryoglobulins was obtained from the peripheral venous blood. In cases of cryoprecipitate formation it was analyzed using anti-IgG, anti-IgM, anti-IgA, anti-C3, and anti-C4 antibodies. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) was d

[Breast cancer metastatic to a renal cell carcinoma].

INTRODUCTION: Renal tumors are often diagnosed during routine radiological-imaging. A newly diagnosed renal tumor next to an existing cancer is challenging since a primary or a secondary renal neoplasm has to be considered in the differential diagnosis. CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old woman underwent radical mastectomy and axillary lymphadenectomy for cancer of the right breast. After surgery, the patient underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy because of multiple metastases. Six years later, computed tomography (CT) obtained as follow-up examination revealed a solid mass in the left kidney. Becau
