This study reports the reading difficulties of five children following unilateral left hemisphere stroke sustained either before or during the early stages of literacy acquisition. Although each of the children experienced a period of disturbed language processing in the initial stages postonset, at the time of testing none of the children were considered to be clinically aphasic. A 53 year old bilingual woman presented with apraxia of speech and writing in English and German after ischaemic infarction of the left posterior lentiform nucleus. Detailed language assessment revealed impairments of articulation, verbal fluency, auditory repetition, interpretation of complex semantic relationships, formulation of definitions and verbal short-term memory. The case illustrates the role of the basal ganglia in speech planning, word retrieval and verbal short-term memory.

Within speech and language therapy (SLT) systems for prioritising treatment waiting lists are emerging in response to demand exceeding resources and difficult decisions having to be made. OBJECTIVE: To determine educational, social and behavioural functioning of children who had been involved in a preschool language intervention programme between 1982 and 1990.
METHODOLOGY: Fifty children who attended the Unit were available for follow-up. Sign language is the fourth most common language in the United States; this mode of communication involves sustained, repetitive use of the hand, wrist, and arm. Signers, therefore, are at risk of overuse disorders as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and ulnar neuritis (UL).
