Gnathostoma spinigerum is the causative agent of human gnathostomiasis. The advanced third stage larva (AL3) of this nematode can migrate into the subcutaneous tissues, including vital organs, often producing severe pathological effects. This study performed immuno-proteomic analysis of antigenic spots, derived from G. spinigerum advanced third stage larva (GSAL3) and recognized by human gnathostomiasis sera, using two-dimensional (2-DE) gel electrophoresis based-liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS), and followed by the aid of a database search. The crude GSAL3 extract was…

The variability of larval excretion impedes the parasitological diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis in infected individuals. We assessed the number of larvae excreted per gram (LPG) stool in 219 samples from 38 infected individuals over 7 consecutive days before and in 470 samples from 44 persons for 21 consecutive days after ivermectin treatment (200 μg kg-1 BW). The diagnostic sensitivity of a single stool sample was about 75% for individuals with low-intensity infections (⩽1 LPG) and increased to 95% for those with high-intensity infections (⩾10 LPG). Doubling the number of samples exami…

Myiasis is defined as a parasitic infestation of tissues and organs in living vertebrates with dipterous larvae. Infestation with dipterous larvae can occur when flies deposit their eggs or first stage larvae on the host's tissues. Myiasis is seen more frequently in tropical and subtropical countries, especially in rural regions where people are in close contact with animals. Diagnosis of myiasis depends on the demonstration of larvae on the host's tissues or organs. Correct identification of the larvae is important for the initiation of appropriate treatment and establishment of preventive me…

The consumption of raw or undercooked Trichinella infected meat, especially pork and horse meat, can have important implications for public health. Therefore each animal carcass from a Trichinella susceptible species intended for human consumption must be examined for Trichinella. Laboratories carrying out testing of official control samples must undergo a quality assurance program and should regularly participate in proficiency testing schemes. To date, Trichinella proficiency samples are prepared with live larvae, which, as a level 2 pathogen, require specific shipping and disinfection proce…

The metacestode stage of Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis (AE), a lethal zoonosis with very lim … lterations in the metacestode upon short-term treatment. We also demonstrate that E. multilocularis larvae express enzymes with high homology to previously identified ABL-like kinases that act as imatinib targets in Schistosoma mansoni. In particular, amino acids known to mediate the binding of imatinib to target kinases are well conserved between human …

Since the 1980s, there has been a worldwide re-emergence of vector-borne diseases including Malaria, Dengue, Yellow fever or, more recently, chikungunya. These viruses are arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) transmitted by arthropods like mosquitoes of Aedes genus. The nature of these arboviruses is complex since it conjugates human, environmental, biological and geographical factors. Recent researchs have suggested, in particular during the Reunion Island epidemic in 2006, that the transmission by Aedes albopictus (an Aedes genus specie) has been facilitated by genetic mutations of the viru

Myiasis is the infestation of living vertebrates by fly larvae that feed for at least part of their development on the host's dead or living tissues, body substances, or ingested food. The occurrences of traumatic myiasis in humans and animals in urban and rural environments represent serious economic and public health concerns. This study reports a 49-year-old tracheostomized man undergoing chemotherapy treatment who was parasitized in the hospital in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by larvae of the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in the thoracic ca…

Eosinophils play important roles in regulation of cellular responses under conditions of homeostasis or infection. Intestinal infection with the parasitic nematode, Trichinella spiralis, induces a pronounced eosinophilia that coincides with establishment of larval stages in skeletal muscle. We have shown previously that in mouse strains in which the eosinophil lineage is ablated, large numbers of T. spiralis larvae are killed by NO, implicating the eosinophil as an immune regulator. In this report, we show that parasite death in eosinophil-ablated mice correlates with reduced recruitment of IL…

This study examined the accumulation and metabolism of a number of drugs and commonly used probes for human cytochrome P450s (CYPs) in zebrafish larvae under conditions relevant to pharmacological and toxicological assays. Studies with cisapride, chlorpromazine, verapamil, testosterone, and dextromethorphan showed that the zebrafish larvae catalyze a range of phase 1 (oxidation, N-demethylation, O-de-ethylation, and N-dealkylation) and phase 2 (sulfation and glucuronidation) reactions. Both similarities and differences in the metabolic pathways were observed in zebrafish larvae when compared t…

The prevalence of infection with cyathosthomes of horses is high worldwide. Identification of species on infective larvae based on available morphological keys is not fully accurate and the aim of the present study was to provide a reliable identification key of cyathostomes infective larvae. At the abattoir, horse large intestines were examined and the cyathostomes females extracted and identified. The eggs from uteruses of identified cyathostomes females were used for breeding the infective larvae. Morphological parameters of Cyathostominae infective larvae, i.e. the length of the larvae wit…

Parasitic nematodes of the group Cyathostominae are an important cause of disease in horses. This group consists of approximately 50 species, all of which have similar life cycles that involve encystment of larval stages in the large intestinal wall. Encysted larvae can persist for months to years and, occasionally, large numbers can accumulate and emerge synchronously to cause severe pathology, resulting in diarrhoea, weight loss, colic and/or oedema. This syndrome, known as larval cyathostominosis, can be fatal in up to 50% of cases, despite treatment. There is no diagnostic method that enab…

The biochemical responses of planulae from the coral Porites astreoides exposed to 10 microg/L of benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) and to 10 microg/L of mercury (Hg) was evaluated. The survivorship of larvae only dropped significantly after 48 h of B(a)P exposure, whereas it remained at 98% for Hg exposure and up to 96 h. Exposure to B(a)P significantly increased free thiols, and the activity of glutathione-S-transferase and catalase were unaltered under exposure of any of the contaminants. This study is the first contribution of the biochemical effects in cnidarian larvae exposed to contaminants.
