Halofantrine Hydrochloride Acts as an Antioxidant Ability Inhibitor That Enhances Oxidative Stress Damage to Candida albicans.

Candida albicans, a prominent opportunistic pathogenic fungus in the human population, possesses the capacity to induce life-threatening invasive candidiasis in individuals with compromised immune systems despite the existence of antifungal medications. When faced with macrophages or neutrophils, C. albicans demonstrates its capability to endure oxidative stress through the utilization of antioxidant enzymes. Therefore, the enhancement of oxidative stress in innate immune cells against C. albicans presents a promising therapeutic approach for the treatment of invasive candidiasis. In this stud

Personalized Antenatal Corticosteroid Therapy and Central Nervous System Development: Reflections on the Gold Standard of Fetomaternal Therapy.

BACKGROUND: The term "fetal programming" refers to the effects of endogenous and exogenous corticosteroids, whether received from the mother or the fetus, on brain development and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis reset. The authors of this narrative review examine the WHO's guidelines for prenatal corticosteroids in pregnant women who are at high risk of premature delivery. These guidelines are regarded as the best available for preventing late-life problems resulting from preterm. METHODS: In order to find full-text publications published in peer-reviewed journals between 1990 and 202

Point of Care Ultrasonography for the Septic Patient in the Emergency Department: A Literature Review.

The point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has been effectively used in intensive care units for the management of septic patients. Since it is a time- and cost-effective non-invasive imaging modality, its use in the emergency department (ED) has been advocated for by medical experts. This review summarizes the existing literature regarding the breadth of POCUS as a supplementary tool to the holistic approach of septic patients in the ED setting. A literature search was conducted via PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases, analyzing studies which examined the use of POCUS in the ED

The Effectiveness of Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercise in Urinary Incontinence: A Systematic Literature Review and Meta-Analysis.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a prevalent health concern in females over 60, but it is prevalent in a smaller percentage of males. The medical and social elements of UI are crucial. This disorder may cause embarrassment and low self-esteem, reducing social and physical activities. Consequently, this may impair healthy aging. Researchers have shown that pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) may improve UI symptoms in middle-aged, older, and young people. Clinical practice highlights the importance of PFMT for UI due to its low cost-effectiveness. To assess PFMT's overall efficacy, we conducted a s

Communicability of varicella before rash onset: a literature review.

Varicella poses an occupational risk and a nosocomial risk for susceptible healthcare personnel and patients, respectively. Patients with varicella are thought to be infectious from 1 to 2 days before rash onset until all lesions are crusted, typically 4-7 days after onset of rash. We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library and CINAHL databases to assess evidence of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) transmission before varicella rash onset. Few articles (7) contributed epidemiologic evidence; no formal studies were found. Published articles reported infectiousness at variable intervals before ra

Surgery in adenomyosis.

INTRODUCTION: Adenomyosis is defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma within the myometrium. The true prevalence is unknown and has been reported to range from 1 to 70%. It has a significantly negative impact on women's quality of life, causing abnormal uterine bleeding, dysmenorrhea, and chronic pelvic pain. The definitive treatment for adenomyosis is hysterectomy, although it does not contemplate patients who wish to preserve their fertility. The aim of this paper is to discuss the latest evidence on the surgical techniques for the treatment of adenomyosis published in medica

Isolation and characterization of a human antibody fragment specific for Ts1 toxin from Tityus serrulatus scorpion.

Scorpion stings are a common event that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, being a public health problem in certain countries. In most places, medical treatment relays on antivenoms obtained from the sera of hyper-immunized horses, however some efforts are being made to prepare specific antibodies of human origin, using phage display methodology. This communication describes the strategy followed for obtaining a protective human single chain antibody (scFv) capable of partially neutralizing the effect of Ts1, the major toxin isolated from the venom of the Brazilian scorpion
