OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to establish the anatomic basis for functional upper and lower lip reconstruction with locoregional flaps.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This article is an anatomic fresh cadaver study.
RESULTS: For lower lip reconstruction, the modified Bernard-Webster and Karapandzic flaps preserve the modiolus, buccinator, zygomaticus major muscle, and buccal branches of the facial nerve. The Bernard-Webster flap allowed for a larger oral aperture despite a larger defect, but required transection of the lower lip depressors and orbicularis oris. For upper lip reco…

AIM: To investigate clinico-pathological features of lymphoma of the lips, and review the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis and review of English literature, 1996-2016.
RESULTS: Analysis included 23 cases, 7 new cases and 16 from literature, 12 M: 11 F, age 7-82 years. Four occurred in children, mean age 10.1; 19 in adults, mean 61.1 years. The lower lip was involved in the majority of cases (16, 69.56%). 14 (60.87%) were isolated to the lips, 8 (34.78%) were multifocal. Nine (39.13%) occurred in association with Sjogren's syndrome, of which one also had Hashimoto thy…

Lipoma is very common benign tumor of adipose tissue, but its presence in the oral cavity is rare. Fibrolipoma is a histological variant of lipoma that affects the buccal mucosa and nasal septum in the orofacial region and causes functional and cosmetic issues. However, this lesion has not been reported on the upper lip and may be confused with other soft tissue lesions of children. Hence, accurate histopathological examination of lipomas is important for a correct treatment plan. The purpose of this report is to describe the case of an 11-year-old boy with fibrolipoma of the upper lip.

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study analyzed moesin immunoexpression in 91 lip squamous cell carcinomas and its influence in patients' prognosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Moesin immunoexpression was evaluated at the invasive tumor front by a semi-quantitative score method. The association of moesin with the clinicopathological variables was analyzed by the Chi-square test, the survival rates were calculated by Kaplan-Meier and the survival curves compared using the log-rank test.
RESULTS: The expression of moesin was strong at the invasive tumor front and weak/negative in differentiated cells such as k…

This report describes a method to expand cleft segments of patients with cleft lip and palate prior to the secondary alveolar bone graft (ABG) using a reprogrammable nickel titanium expander. The expander can be reprogrammed with electric current to the desired width for each patient and delivers a gradual slow expansive spring force that expands and aligns the segments without further adjustments. Reprogramming the expander eliminates the need for multiple appliances and reduces chair time and patient appointments. The expander can be left in place during the ABG, because it does not interfer…

Schwannoma is a benign tumour of Schwann cell origin. Although it commonly occurs in the head and neck region, its intraoral presentation is rare. Establishing a clinical diagnosis of schwannoma is often difficult due to its non-specific clinical features. Hence, histopathological telltale features of Antoni A and Antoni B areas are unexpected in most cases. Reported here is a case of intraoral schwannoma affecting a 17-year-old male who presented with a slow growing mass in the lower lip.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most frequently encountered benign mixed tumor of the minor salivary gland and usually presents in the parotid; however, in the minor salivary gland, it is more common in the palate. Tumors of the minor salivary glands are uncommon, with the most common intraoral site reported being the hard and soft palate owing to the preponderance of minor salivary glands in this region followed by the lips. Pleomorphic adenoma arising from minor salivary glands of the lips tends to occur at an earlier age than it does at other sites. Pleomorphic adenoma of the lip is a rare neopl…

BACKGROUND: Infantile hemangiomas of the lip are potentially problematic because of high visibility and risk of disfigurement and ulceration. This study examined sizes, patterns, and locations of lip hemangiomas, their prognostic value, and their implications in hemangioma pathogenesis.
METHODS: Records of 106 patients seen for lip hemangiomas from 2006 to 2013 at Nationwide Children's Hospital were reviewed. Localized hemangiomas were mapped to a location on the lip based on their focus. Size, location, and morphology were assessed with regard to outcome. Poor outcomes were considered to be …

Vocal polyps do not have a well-defined therapeutic indication. The recommended treatment is often laryngeal microsurgery, followed by postoperative speech therapy. Speech therapy as the initial treatment for polyps is a new concept and aims to modify inappropriate vocal behavior, adjust the voice quality, and encourage regression of the lesion. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the sonorous lips and tongue trill technique in the treatment of vocal polyps. The sample consisted of 10 adults diagnosed with a polyp who were divided into two subgroups: treatment and control. Ten s…

Diagnosis and management of lip pathologies should be part of the dentists' responsibilities. Lip pathologies might affect patient's function, appearance and quality of life. The routine clinical examination of the oral cavity includes lip examination--changes in lip color, size or texture should be recognized during the examination, as well as noticing any habit such as lip licking or mouth breathing. The aim of the review is to present common external lip lesions. Color changes--oral melanotic macule is a localized benign pigmented lesion. It might be similar to early melanoma therefore if it…

Paradoxical vocal cord motion (PVCM) during vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) generally occurs spasmodically and transiently. After we had experienced 36 cases of VCD and successfully treated with conservative treatment including "pursed lips inspiration" method, we experienced a boy who had persistent PVCM. It was observed his PVCM vanished when he breathed in through pursed lips, while it appeared again when he stopped pursed lips inspiration. An airway reflex has been reported where the negative pressure in the subglottic space resulting from the inspiratory effort against a narrowed glottis act…

Craniofacial development consists of a highly complex sequence of the orchestrated growth and fusion of facial processes. It is also known that craniofacial abnormalities can be detected in 1/3 of all patients with congenital diseases. Within the various craniofacial abnormalities, orofacial clefting is one of the most common phenotypic outcomes associated with retarded facial growth or fusion. Cleft lip is one of the representative and frequently encountered conditions in the spectrum of orofacial clefting. Despite various mechanisms or signaling pathways that have been proposed to be the cau…

Exophytic growth of the oral cavity often presents a diagnostic challenge because a diverse group of the pathologic process can produce such lesions. Inflammatory hyperplasia is one of the important etiology behind the exophytic growths of the oral cavity. The pyogenic granuloma (PG) is the most common type of inflammatory hyperplasia found in the oral cavity especially in the gingiva. Extragingival occurrence of PG is very rare. This case report has described an extragingival PG which occurred on the lower labial mucosa in a 54-year-old male patient.
