Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare systemic inflammatory disease manifesting with a persistent high-spiking fever, a typical rash, … itive lymphoid cell and blood vessel. Most cases required differential diagnosis from dermatopathic lymphadenitis (n = 16, 33.3%), T cell lymphoma (n = 11, 22.9%), and histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL) (n = 9, 18.8%). The expression levels of CXCL10 and CXCR3 were higher in patients with AOSD than in those with T cell lymphoma, HNL, tuberculous lympha …

Adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is a mature T cell malignancy, especially derived from the CD4 positive T cell. To characterize the T cell, we examined the representation of T cell antigen receptor variable region, using the monoclonal antibodies [beta V 5 (a), beta V 5 (b), beta V 6 (a), beta V 8 (a), beta V 12 (a), alpha V 2 (a), alpha-beta V (a)]. Clinicopathologically we classified the lymph nodes of patients with ATLL into three states (1) human T cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) associated lymphadenitis, reactive state; (2) incipient ATLL, early or pre-neoplastic state; and (3) …

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTL) is a variant of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma that can mimic inflammatory panniculitis, particularly lupus erythematosus panniculitis, clinically and histologically. Patients with SPTL generally have a benign course, though SPTL can be complicated by hemophagocytic syndrome, which can negatively impact prognosis. We report a patient with recurrent SPTL and hemophagocytic syndrome accompanied by a necrotizing lymphadenitis consistent with Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease. SPTL and Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease have not previously been reported to occur toget…

A 28 year old veterinary medical student experienced spiking fever, cough, peripheral blood eosinophilia and an eosinophilic pulmonary infiltrate. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis was isolated from a transtracheal aspirate and bronchoscopy washings. C. pseudotuberculosis, a pathogen responsible for lymphadenitis in livestock, has never been reported to cause pneumonia in man. In the four cases of C. pseudotuberculosis previously reported, lymphadenitis was the chief clinical presentation. In our patient specific antibodies against the isolated C. pseudotuberculosis developed but not against …

Of the total cases of tuberculosis reported in Canada between 1970-1974, approximately one-sixth (3671 cases) involved primarily non-respiratory organs. Common diagnostic entities were genitourinary tuberculosis (1516 cases), lymphadenitis (1083 cases), bone and joint tuberculosis (555 cases), gastrointestinal tuberculosis (155 cases) and meningitis (138 cases). The remainder (224 cases) involved a wide variety of organs. Between 1967 and 1977 the morbidity rates of most non-respiratory manifestations steadily declined, the decline in meningitis being particularly marked. In contrast, lymphade…

Unilateral axillary lymphadenopathy has various benign and malignant etiologies. Although benign causes are more common, it is important to exclude malignant causes, including metastasis from primary breast carcinoma. Benign etiologies include reactive adenopathy, granulomatous disease, and collagen vascular disease. We present a case of unilateral right axillary lymphadenopathy in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis. The pathologic diagnosis of granulomatous lymphadenitis and interval discovery of patient's history of latent tuberculosis led to a second biopsy for special mycobacterial staini…

Lymphadenopathy is the most frequent clinical manifestation of acute acquired infection with Toxoplasma in the immunocompetent individual. One hundred seven cases of histologically verified toxoplasmic lymphadenitis were reviewed in an effort to determine the usual modes of clinical presentation and the incidence of extranodal disease. Toxoplasmic lymphadenitis most frequently involved a solitary lymph node in the head and neck regions, without systemic symptoms or extranodal disease and with a benign clinical course. However, serious extranodal disease did occur in some patients and included …

Tularemia is a zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis (F. tularensis). Although tularemia has historically been considered rare in Denmark, increasing numbers of diagnosed cases and recent seroepidemiological data suggest that the infection is increasingly recognized and may be more widespread than previously appreciated. This paper describes two pediatric cases presenting with persistent fever, punched-out inoculation ulcer (eschar) and local (inguinal)lymphadenitis, initially misdiagnosed as a common bacterial soft tissue infection. Both cases highlight delayed diagnosis, lack o…

We presented a case of unusual endobronchial inflammatory polyps as a complication following endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) in a patient with tuberculous lymphadenitis. EBUS-TBNA of the right hilar lymph node was performed in a 29-year-old, previously healthy man. The patient was confirmed with tuberculous lymphadenitis and received antituberculosis medication over the course of 6 months. Chest computed tomography, after 6 months of antituberculosis therapy following the EBUS-TBNA showed nodular bronchial wall thickening of the right main bronchus.…

During the period April 1983 to March 1986, lymphoreticular lesions in cattle were surveyed at an Ontario abattoir. Postmortem examination of 171,157 cattle revealed macroscopic lesions in 696 animals (0.4%). The most frequent finding was abscessation of a single lymph node, a finding that was observed in 353 cases (50.7% of animals with lesions/0.2% of total slaughter). Actinobacillary granulomas were present in 252 lymph nodes (36.2%/0.1%). Other specific lesions included mycobacteriosis and mycotic or parasitic lymphadenitis. Cases of nonspecific chronic lymphadenitis or granulomas in lymph…

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Lymphadenopathy and haematological alterations are the earliest manifestations with other associated opportunistic … ients. Peripheral smears were taken from all the patients and CD4 counts were recorded. Tuberculous lymphadenitis was further categorized. Acid fast bacilli (AFB) grading was done on Z-N positive smears. Each lesion was compared with CD4 counts, WHO clinical staging and haematological picture.
RESULTS: Cytological diagnosis in 129 patients included tuberculous …

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), is rare, self-limiting disorder with necrotizing lymphadenitis as its hallmark, can be difficult to diagnose because it may have multiple nonspecific features. The study presented here describes the rare type of KFD that occurred in a young male patient suffering from quadriplegia and who was wrongly diagnosed as having tuberculous lymphadenitis, which is a common cause of lymphadenopathy in tuberculosis-endemic area. A 19-year-old man had presented with two week history of fever, quadriplegia, and cervical lymphadenopathy. On physical examination revealed cervi…

Kikuchi's lymphadenitis is a histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis without granulocytic infiltration, with fever and generally with a benign course, despite its pathologic resemblance to malignant lymphoma. The illness usually begins with localized cervical adenopathy in young adult females, predominantly before the fourth decade of life. Clinically, several agents could be the cause of such an illness--toxoplasmosis, herpes group viral infection, cat scratch disease, lymphoma, SLE and other infectious agents. The diagnosis is made by using a histological technique. The lymph node biopsy revea…

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease is a necrotizing lymphadenitis, mainly characterized by lymphadenopathy, fever, hepatosplenomegaly, nocturnal sweats, myalgia, weight loss, and arthralgia. Its diagnosis is most often based on lymph node biopsy. Differential diagnoses with several other diseases, e.g., malignant lymphoma, necrotizing lymphadenitis, and infective lymphadenopathies, may be challenging. Neurologic involvement is rarely reported in patients diagnosed with Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease. In this subset of patients, the great majority manifest signs involving the central nervous system. We present…

Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease is a form of histocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis that largely affects women of Asian descent. The cause of this pathology remains to be elucidated although it is supposed that it has immunological and infectious nature. Clinically, Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease manifests itself as unilateral lymphadenoapthy accompanied by febrile state and other non-specific symptoms. The diagnosis is based on the results of puncture (in the first place, excision) biopsy. No effective treatment of histocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis has thus far been proposed. Spontaneous regression o…

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), also known as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a self-limiting lymphadenitis. It is a benign disease mainly characterized by high fever, lymph node swelling, and leukopenia. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening disease with clinical symptoms similar to those of KFD, but it requires a significantly more aggressive treatment. A 19-year-old Korean male patient was hospitalized for fever and cervical lymphadenopathy. Variable-sized lymph node enlargements with slightly necrotic lesions were detected on computed tomography. Biopsy s…
