Intracellular free magnesium deficiency plays a key role in increased platelet reactivity in type II diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: Mg deficiency may be an important factor leading to cardiovascular disease. Diabetic subjects show an increase in platelet reactivity that can enhance the risks of vascular disease. In addition, diabetic patients have been reported to be at risk of developing extracellular Mg deficiency. However, the intracellular free Mg concentration and its role in the enhanced platelet reactivity in diabetes is not known. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We evaluated the intracellular erythrocyte (RBC) Mg2+ concentration in 20 non-insulin-dependent (type II) diabetics. In addition, the effects of i

Bone demineralization and impaired mineral metabolism in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. A possible role of magnesium deficiency.

Osteoporosis, a recognized complication of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), may be related to this complex metabolic disorder; moreover, some data emphasize an altered vitamin D metabolism or parathyroid hormone secretion. Mineral homeostasis was studied in 29 children with IDDM (18 males, 11 females; 2.6-18.0 years). In 17 patients a stimulatory test (low-calcium diet) was performed for PTH and 1.25(OH)2D. Bone mineral content (BMC) and BMC/BW were lower in respect to our normal values; bone mineral loss was directly related to HbA1c levels and insulin requirements. A significant d

Effect of magnesium deficiency on delta 6 desaturase activity and fatty acid composition of rat liver microsomes.

Experimental Mg2+ deficiency was induced in a group of rats by feeding them a Mg2+-deficient diet for 23 days. They were pair-fed to compare with a control group of rats fed a Mg2+-sufficient diet. In the Mg2+-deficient group the plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were increased while HDL-cholesterol was decreased. In the Mg2+-deficient group the plasma level of thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS) used as a measure for lipid peroxidation was increased. The increase was attributed to the increased cytosolic Ca2+ in Mg2+-deficiency which can cause: 1) increase of hydro

Effects of dietary magnesium deficiency on thallium-20 1 kinetics and distribution in rat myocardium: concise communication.

Kinetics and distribution of TI-201 were studied in myocardium of rats with chronic dietary induced Mg deficiency. Rats were fed the Mg-deficient diet for 30 days and were then injected intravenously with 0.2 mCi of TI-201. Comparable control animals were fed a standard laboratory diet. One-half hour after injection, rats were killed and a segment of myocardium was washed with nonradioactive Krebs solution in a special chamber. Radioactivity in the tissue was recorded continuously for 1 hr. A three-compartment model (extracellular, main intracellular, and subcellular) was found to describe ade

Sulfur deficiency mediated visible emission of ZnS QDs by magnesium dopant and their application in waste water treatment.

The photocatalyst with antimicrobial activity serves as a better candidate material for wastewater treatment, as wastewater contains microbes, hazardous dyes, and heavy metals. Hence, the present study extensively examines the photocatalytic and antibacterial activities against two waterborne bacterial strains, namely Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli. Pure and Mg-doped ZnS (Mg:ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized using a low-cost and simple co-precipitation method. The QDs' structural, surface morphology, chemical purity, and optical characteristics were analyzed through XRD, SEM, EDA

Exploring the Effects of Magnesium Deficiency on the Quality Constituents of Hydroponic-Cultivated Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) Leaves.

Magnesium (Mg) plays important roles in photosynthesis, sucrose partitioning, and biomass allocation in plants. However, the specific mechanisms of tea plant response to Mg deficiency remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of Mg deficiency on the quality constituents of tea leaves. Our results showed that the short-term (7 days) Mg deficiency partially elevated the concentrations of polyphenols, free amino acids, and caffeine but decreased the contents of chlorophyll and Mg. However, long-term (30 days) Mg-deficient tea displayed decreased contents of these constituents. Pa

Iron, Magnesium, Vitamin D, and Zinc Deficiencies in Children Presenting with Symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder increasing in prevalence. Although there is limited evidence to support treating ADHD with mineral/vitamin supplements, research does exist showing that patients with ADHD may have reduced levels of vitamin D, zinc, ferritin, and magnesium. These nutrients have important roles in neurologic function, including involvement in neurotransmitter synthesis. The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of each of these nutrients in the brain, the possible altered levels of these nutrients in patients with ADHD, possible

The effect of ozone on the yellowing process of magnesium-deficient clonal Norway spruce grown under defined conditions.

During two vegetation periods, young clonal spruce trees (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) with sufficient and poor magnesium (Mg) supply were exposed in the environmental chambers of the GSF phytotron to three levels of ozone (daily means: 18-22, 88-130, and 135-190 microg m(-3); 10% reduction at night). Previous year's needles were examined at 4-week intervals with respect to their contents of Mg, Ca, K, Mn, N, P, and chlorophyll (Chl), various parameters of Chl fluorescence, and the stability of the isolated light-harvesting Chl-a/b-protein complex LHC II. The needles of the two nutrition variants

In vitro application of endotoxin to thoracic aortas from magnesium-deficient rats enhances vascular hyporeactivity to phenylephrine.

OBJECTIVE: Endotoxin-induced vascular hyporeactivity to phenylephrine (PE) is well described in rat aortas, but has not been investigated in those from magnesium (Mg)-deficient rats in vitro. METHODS: Segments of thoracic aorta from control and Mg-deficient rats were incubated in culture medium for 6 hours in the presence or absence of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 0.001-10 microg/mL). Contractions to PE were measured with or without an inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) inhibitor (1400W; 0.1 and 1 microM), a guanylate cyclase inhibitor (ODQ; 0.1 and 1 microM), or a potassium channel

Physiopathology of symptomatic and latent forms of central nervous hyperexcitability due to magnesium deficiency: a current general scheme.

Symptomatic forms of central nervous hyperexcitability (NHE) due to magnesium deficiency results from the sum of direct cellular effects and of local and systemic mediated effects inducing depolarization and NHE. Direct effects associate decreased energy and cationic gradient with disturbances in Ca distribution, decreased second messenger nucleotidic ratio and increased susceptibility to peroxidation. Local mediated effects associate increased activity of excitatory neuromediators: acetylcholine, catecholamines and ionotropic - (NMDA and non-NMDA) - receptors of excitatory aminoacids (EAA), w…

Regional brain monoamine concentrations and their alterations in bovine hypomagnesaemic tetany experimentally induced by a magnesium-deficient diet.

Monoamines are important brain neurotransmitters. An investigation was carried out to determine if hypomagnesaemic tetany was associated with alterations in regional brain monoamine concentrations in bovines. The results, established in cows with normal magnesium status, demonstrated that regional differences existed in the distribution and concentration of brain monoamines in the adult bovine, which were similar to those in other species. In magnesium-deficient cows, severe hypomagnesaemia and lowered cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) magnesium concentrations were associated with significant alterati

Comparison of serum copper, magnesium, zinc and calcium levels between G6PD deficient and normal Chinese adults.

Minerals are important for normal hematopoiesis and may play a role in acute hemolytic anemia induced by G6PD deficiency. To compare serum magnesium, copper, zinc and calcium levels between G6PD deficiency and normal control adults, we investigated 69 G6PD deficient (28 male, 41 female) and 61 age- matched G6PD normal adults (26 male, 35 female). Serum magnesium, copper, zinc and calcium levels were determined by atomic absorbance spectrometry. Our results revealed that male adults with G6PD deficiency had significantly higher serum copper and magnesium levels than those of the control group (

Possible alterations of the in vivo 1,25(OH)2D3 synthesis and its tissue distribution in magnesium-deficient rats.

In a previous work we showed that a decrease in the free intracellular magnesium produced alterations in the kinetic behaviour of 1 alpha-hydroxylase which reduced the synthesis rate of 1,25(OH)2D3. This in vitro result strongly supports that magnesium deficiency could also induce in vivo failure of the renal enzyme and then a decrease of 1,25(OH)2D3 serum levels. In the present work we have tested the effect of magnesium deficiency on the in vivo transformation of the substrate 3H-25(OH)D3 to 3H-1,25(OH)2D3 as well as the distribution of synthesized hormone among its different target tissues.…

Effect of magnesium deficiency on triacylglycerol-rich lipoprotein and tissue susceptibility to peroxidation in relation to vitamin E content.

Given the current interest in the cardiovascular complications of Mg deficiency, the aim of the present experiment was to investigate the effect of Mg deficiency on the time-course of lipoprotein oxidation and to assess whether short-term Mg deficiency results in vitamin E depletion that predisposes lipoproteins and tissues to subsequent oxidation. Weanling rats were pair-fed for 8 d with control and Mg-deficient diets respectively. Plasma triacylglycerol and alpha-tocopherol levels were significantly greater in Mg-deficient rats compared with control animals. The increase in plasma apolipopro

Effect of dietary magnesium deficiency with/without cholesterol supplementation on phospholipid content in liver, plasma and erythrocytes of rabbits.

The effect of magnesium deficiency with/without supplementary cholesterol on phospholipid content in liver, plasma and erythrocytes was investigated in New Zealand White male rabbits. After the rabbits had been fed a low magnesium and/or high cholesterol diet for seven weeks, the phospholipid content in liver, plasma and erythrocytes was measured. Dietary magnesium deficiency produced a marked elevation of total phospholipid and certain individual phospholipids in the rabbit liver. The elevation was accentuated by cholesterol supplementation. In the plasma, a low magnesium intake enhanced plas…

Effect of acute magnesium deficiency on the masking and unmasking of the proton channel of the uncoupling protein in rat brown fat.

The short term regulation of heat production in brown adipose tissue mitochondria (BAT) of acutely Mg-deficient rats was demonstrated by com … ndent on the presence of magnesium in vitro. The basal CmH+, independent of UCP, was not altered by magnesium deficiency. These results emphasize that acute regulation of thermogenic BAT activity through the masking and unmasking process is altered when magnesium supply is limited in vivo.

Imbalance of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus in bone and other tissues of rats induced by low protein and calcium deficiency.

Female Wistar rats were separated into 9 groups, and 9 different synthetic diets (each diet contains different level of protein and calcium) were given to each group. After 5 weeks of these dietary regimens, all rats were sacrificed and calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus levels in plasma and various tissues were determined. In calcium-deficient groups, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus level in bone decreased, plasma calcium level decreased and there was a tendency that magnesium levels in brain and liver and phosphorus level in brain increased. Salt intake of rats fed diets deficient in calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, or all minerals.

Groups of nine to ten male rats fed diets deficient in calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, or all minerals (i.e. no mineral mix) were given 0.3 M NaCl and water to drink. Over the first 30 days of dietary treatment, 0.3 M NaCl intake was progressively increased by deprivation of calcium or iron, unaltered by deprivation of phosphorus, and increased and then decreased by deprivation of magnesium, potassium, or all minerals. The changes in NaCl intake of rats deprived of potassium or all minerals were matched by corresponding changes in water intake. Water intakes of the other group
