Histopathological crossover between unicystic ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst in 12-year-old: a case report with literature review.

AIM: Pediatric jaw lesions often present diagnostic challenges due to overlapping clinical and radiographic features. BACKGROUND: Among these, unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) are two distinct odontogenic entities with differing biological behaviors and recurrence risk. However, a few cases may exhibit histopathological features of both, complicating definitive diagnosis and management. CASE DESCRIPTION: This paper presents a case of a 12-year-old boy with a mandibular lesion clinically suggestive of a dentigerous cyst based on clinical and radiographical analysi

Sclerosing Odontogenic Carcinoma: A Unique Odontogenic Carcinoma with Metastatic Potential.

BACKGROUND: The recent World Health Organization (WHO) classification of odontogenic tumours defines Sclerosing Odontogenic Carcinoma (SOC) as a rare primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) of the jaws. With the exception of one case, there have been no cases of SOC with metastatic disease. We report a unique case of SOC with neck node metastases, further expanding the clinical, radiological and histological spectrum of this rare intriguing tumour. METHODS: A 52-year-old female presented with a destructive radiolucent lesion of right mandible. Incisional biopsy was interpreted as desmoplastic a

Solid type primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma in a long hair cat.

BACKGROUND: Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy that originates within the bone, reported in both humans and animals. While squamous cell carcinoma is the most common oral tumor in cats, PIOSCC is an uncommon variant with distinct clinical and pathological features. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-old spayed female domestic longhair cat presented with a progressively enlarging mass at the rostral mandible. Over 6 weeks, the cat exhibited clinical signs including inappetence, excessive salivation, and pain. Diagnostic evaluations comprised hema

A benign tumor of substantial size: Mandibular epithelioid osteoblastoma in a socioeconomically challenged patient.

Epithelioid osteoblastoma (EOB) is a rare, benign bone tumor characterized by the proliferation of atypical epithelioid osteoblasts within a vascular stroma. It typically presents as a slow-growing painful mass and requires careful differentiation from more aggressive lesions like osteosarcoma for appropriate management. We present a case of an otherwise healthy 30-year-old man who presented with a mandibular EOB measuring 23 cm × 17 cm x 19 cm, causing significant disfigurement and functional impairment. Surgical management involved radical resection and immediate reconstruction using an oste

Hybrid tumor of central giant cell granuloma and trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma of the mandible: A rare event in the oral cavity with a review on pathogenesis.

Hybrid tumors are rare lesions having features of multiple diseases in one lesion. A hybrid tumor of central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) and central ossifying fibroma (COF) shows the presence of microscopically large areas with CGCG character and large areas with COF features inside a single clinical lesion, separated by a transition zone. A rare type of COF is juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF)-trabecular variant in the mandible. We present a unique and rare case of a hybrid tumor of the CGCG-JOF-trabecular variant in the mandible of a 14-year-old female which initially diagnosed with CGCG. The

Assessment of facial symmetry by three-dimensional stereophotogrammetry after mandibular reconstruction: A comparison with subjective assessment.

INTRODUCTION: The assessment of facial symmetry, after mandibular reconstruction, currently relies on subjective esthetic assessment by an evaluator. The present study aimed to compare conventional subjective assessment with quantitative evaluation by three-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry of facial cosmetic symmetry. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 20 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction with free fibula flap after segmental resection between 2014 and 2018. Subjective assessments were performed by seven clinicians at 6-12 months after surgery. Simultaneously, lowe

A mixed radiopaque - radiolucent lesion in the anterior mandible associated with multiple impacted teeth: A radiodiagnostic challenge?

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma (DA) exhibits important differences in gender, anatomic distribution, radiographic findings, and histologic appearance compared to other types of ameloblastoma. Radiologically, DA is seen either as ill-defined mass containing osteolytic and sclerotic areas or as multifocal radiodense flecks within radiolucent background resembling a honeycomb. The radiographic differential diagnosis includes fibro-osseous lesions such as cemento-ossifying fibroma, fibrous dysplasia, calcifying odontogenic cyst, and chronic sclerosing osteomyelitis. Thus, DA should primarily be includ

Gardner syndrome with maxillofacial manifestation: A case report.

Gardner syndrome is a hereditary disease in which patients develop gastrointestinal polyps, osteomas, desmoid tumors, epidermoid cysts, fibromas, lipomas, and retinal lesions. Dental abnormalities such as supernumerary or impacted teeth, odontomas and dentigerous cysts are also reported. The most serious concern in this syndrome is the extremely high risk of gastrointestinal polyps undergoing malignant transformation. Since the maxillofacial findings usually precede gastrointestinal polyps, the dentist plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of Gardner syndrome, and panoramic radiography is an i

Florid osseous dysplasia.

Florid osseous dysplasia (FOD) is the most dramatic and rare variant of the cemento-osseous lesions in which the normal cancellous bone is replaced by dense, acellular cemento-osseous tissue in a background of fibrous connective tissue. It appears to be a widespread form of periapical cemental dysplasia (PCD). No clear definition indicates that when the multiple lesions of PCD can be termed as FOD. If PCD is identified in three or four quadrants or is extensive in one jaw, then it is considered as FOD. Here, in this article, we report a case of FOD in 35-year-old woman.

Solitary neurofibroma arising from the infratemporal fossa in a child.

Neurofibromas are derived from the nerve sheath and are commonly located in the head and neck region. They usually occur between the ages of 30 and 50 years. Neurofibromas arising from the infratemporal fossa are quite rare, especially in children. We describe a solitary neurofibroma arising from the infratemporal fossa in an 8-year-old boy who presented with a painless mass in his right cheek. Computed tomographic scan showed a soft-density, not well-circumscribed mass located in the right infratemporal fossa. The tumor was resected via the transmandibular approach with an excellent outcome.

Burkitt's lymphoma in an Indian girl: a case report.

Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is a rare monoclonal proliferation of B-lymphocytes and is classified as a poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma. This tumor was first noted in Africans. The cause of this tumor is debatable, but strong evidence implicates Epstein-Barr virus in its development. This tumor predominantly affects children and is probably the fastest growing tumor in humans, with exuberant proliferation. It is a very rare malignancy accounting for only 0.76% of solid malignant tumors among Indian children. A case of BL of the mandible in a 9-year-old girl of Indian origin is reported.

Brown tumor of the mandible as first manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism: diagnosis and treatment.

Brown tumor is one of the lesions that develop in patients with hyperparathyroidism. Any of the skeletal bones can be affected including the cranio-maxillofacial ones. Most of the times the brown tumor appears after a final diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism is made. However brown tumor can be the first clinical sign of the disease. A clinical case in which a brown tumor located in the anterior part of the mandible appears as the first sign of primary hyperparathyroidism is presented. The possible differential clinical diagnosis and the recommended treatments are revised.

Malignant neuroendocrine tumor presenting in the mandible.

The carotid body, jugulotympanic, vagal, and laryngeal paragangliomas are the most common paragangliomas respectively within the head and neck, although unusual examples in other sites have been described. Among these are several references in the literature to a mandibular or "alveolar body" paraganglioma, even though such an entity does not appear to have been adequately documented. This report describes a case which presented as an extensive osteoblastic tumor involving the mandible and which radiographically appeared as a typical osteosarcoma. However, the immunohistochemical and electron

Calcifying odontogenic cyst with ameloblastic fibro-odontome: one lesion or two?

The calcifying odontogenic cyst is unusual in that it is frequently found in conjunction with the histologic features of a variety of other odontogenic conditions. Two cases are reported, one of which contained areas histologically similar to the ameloblastic fibro-odontome and also showed condensations of cells in the stroma beneath epithelial strands proliferating from the cyst lining. In both cases the "ghost cells" stained strongly for disulphide groups but only occasional areas were positive for sulphydryl groups. No amyloid or "amyloid-like" material was detected. As no part of the curre

Isolated odontogenic keratocyst.

Although odontogenic keratocysts are benign they are often locally destructive and tend to recur after conservative surgical treatment. They must therefore be distinguished from other cysts of the jaw. Keratocysts possess outpouchings and microscopic daughter cysts from which recurrences may arise. Histologic examination is essential for diagnosis since the appearances on roentgenograms and at operation usually do not reveal the true nature of the lesion. Since many nondental surgeons and pathologists are unaware of odontogenic keratocysts a case is presented in which surgical treatment was or
