OBJECTIVES: Characterizing susceptibility profiles across age groups and administrative units is essential for targeted vaccination and control of resurgent vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, but is often limited by the lack of historical vaccination records.
METHODS: We proposed a methodology based on the screening method that uses routine surveillance data, such as case age and vaccination status, along with an estimate of vaccine effectiveness, to estimate age-stratified susceptibility to a vaccine-preventable disease.
RESULTS: Applying this method to the 10 most affected Brazilia…

INTRODUCTION: Measles is a highly contagious vaccinepreventable disease endemic to Malaysia. This study aimed to determine the determinants of measles cases with complications in Selangor, Malaysia, from 2014 to 2023.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of confirmed measles cases in Selangor using the secondary surveillance database, Sistem Maklumat Siasatan Measles (SM2). The data were reviewed from April 2024 to June 2024. All registered measles cases in Selangor from 2014 to 2023 were analyzed to determine the determinants of measles cases with complications, the type o…

Despite the availability of measles vaccines, infants continue to die from measles. Measles vaccine responses vary between individuals, and poor immunogenicity is likely to preclude protection against measles. CD46 is a ubiquitously expressed specific receptor for vaccine strains of measles virus. CD46 polymorphisms have not been functionally investigated but may affect CD46 protein expression, which in turn may mediate primary measles antibody responses in infants. In a cohort of children aged 12 to 14 months from Perth, Australia (n = 137), after their first dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MM…

IMPORTANCE: Measles outbreaks are costly and challenging to control. A measles outbreak associated with a Chicago, Illinois, shelter, which primarily affected shelter residents, resulted in substantial public health response costs, direct medical costs, and productivity losses.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the societal burden of the 2024 Chicago measles outbreak in terms of resources used and costs.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This economic evaluation analyzed the costs of a shelter-associated measles outbreak in Chicago between March 7 and April 30, 2024, in terms of measles cases, contact…

Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the measles virus. Recent declines in population-level immunity and outbreaks linked to imported cases have led to the highest U.S. incidence of measles since its elimination in 2000. Measles infection during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of pneumonia, need for respiratory support and mortality, prematurity, and stillbirth. Although perinatal transmission is rare, congenital measles is linked to higher infant mortality. No licensed antiviral therapies or curative treatments exist, making prevention critical. Measles-cont…

Measles is a highly transmissible viral disease that is preventable through vaccination. Despite global initiatives, outbreaks persist, demonstrating the need for high immunization coverage. Spread occurs via respiratory droplets and airborne particles, reinforcing the need for herd immunity. Symptoms include fever, cough, and a distinctive rash. Complications may include pneumonia, encephalitis, and in rare cases, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Diagnosis relies on reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and serology tests. Two doses of th…
