Although Meckel's diverticulum is the commonest congenital gastrointestinal anomaly, there is still debate concerning the proper management of asymptomatic diverticula. Records of all patients whose Meckel's diverticulum was resected at our hospitals between 1990 and 2002 were reviewed. Clinical characteristics, mode of presentations, and management for all patients were analyzed. Meckel's diverticula were resected in 68 patients. Patients were divided into two groups: the incidental group included 40 patients (24 males) in whom the diagnosis of diverticula was incidental. The symptomatic grou

The case of a 40 year old male that, after the etiological study performed due to rectorrhages that was the only symptom he presented, was referred to an exploratory laparotomy. A disseminated adenocarcinoma arising in Meckeĺs diverticulum was detected and palliative segmentary resection of the small bowel was performed. The lack of previous symptoms lead to the dissemination of the disease and to the impossibility of curative surgical resection of the tumor.

The Mitrofanoff procedure is a versatile technique that is successfully used in achieving continent urinary diversion for a wide variety of urological conditions. Appendix and usable segment of ureter are commonly employed for this purpose and provide desirable results. This communication describes a teenage girl with lumbosacral agenesis and neurogenic bladder in whom Meckel's diverticulum was successfully used for the Mitrofanoff procedure.

A symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum (MD) may manifest as an intestinal obstruction secondary to a volvulus. We describe a case of a meconium-impacted MD associated with inflammatory adhesions to adjacent viscera that presented as an intestinal obstruction in a 4-h-old infant secondary to an ileal volvulus with resultant infarction of the diverticulum and ileal segment.

We report herein a case of leiomyosarcoma of Meckel's diverticulum which presented as a rare manifestation of perforation. A previously healthy 63-year-old man was referred to the Tetsujinkai Eniwa hospital following the sudden development of acute abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a solid mass in the pelvic cavity, and an emergency operation was performed under a provisional diagnosis of peritonitis associated with a pelvic tumor. A perforated tumoral mass was found in Meckel's diverticulum. Segmental resection of the ileum, including the tumor-bearing diverticulum, was p

Meckel's diverticulum, which is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, occurs when the vitelline duct persists past the 7th week of gestation. Although complications may occur in 8% to 22% of patients with Meckel's diverticula, adenocarcinoma is very uncommon. We describe a patient with early gastric cancer who was incidentally found to have a superficial adenocarcinoma arising from ectopic gastric mucosa within a Meckel's diverticulum. To the best of our knowledge, synchronous gastric adenocarcinoma in a patient with Meckel's diverticulum has not been previously rep

Meckel's diverticulum is known to present with myriad complications. However, its perforation followed by development of subphrenic abscess has not been reported in literature. We report this complication in an eleven-month-old child.

Clinical findings and surgical treatment of a 68 years old man with carcinoid tumor of Meckel's diverticulum are reported. Carcinoids in Meckel's diverticula are rare tumors, commonly discovered incidentally during surgical procedures for different indications. Symptoms are frequently expression of a metastatic disease. Specific diagnostic and therapeutic tools are discussed.

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 22-year-old man who had never been seriously ill previously was admitted because of epigastric pain and vomiting of bile.
INVESTIGATIONS: He had slight pain on pressure over the epigatric region and decreased intestinal peristaltic sounds. There was evidence of ileus of the small intestine both by ultrasound and radiologically.
TREATMENT AND COURSE: As the patient's condition deteriorated on conservative treatment, an exploratory laparotomy was performed. It revealed an invaginated Meckel's diverticulum, Ileus of the small intestine recurred postoperatively,

Meckel's diverticulum is the congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract affecting about 2% of the population. It is a true diverticulum containing all layers of the ileum wall. Heterotopic tissue is frequently present (25%): gastric mucosa, duodenal mucosa, jejunal mucosa and pancreatic tissue. Meckel's diverticulum is localized about 50 cm from the ileo-colic valve on the external border of the ileum. Most of Meckel's diverticula are clinically silent; clinical symptoms (19%) are in cases of complications such as: strangulation of the bowel in a ring formed by the diverticulum, intussus

Laparoscopy has not changed the diagnostic approach in Meckel's diverticulum (MD). Preoperative echography and scintigraphy are still indicated in case of symptomatic diverticulum. During each submesocolic laparoscopy we must meticulously look for Meckel's diverticulum. There are two surgical procedures for MD resection: 1. Short intestinal resection after exteriorization (celio-assisted surgery) is advocated in young patients or in complicated MD. 2. Laparoscopic resection by the Endo GIA stapler is advocated in older patients and latent MD with a narrow base.

We report a case of gallstone ileus in which the stone impacted at the neck of a Meckel's diverticulum. CT demonstrated the gallstone as a calcified mass in the lower abdomen. Gallstone ileus was diagnosed although a more accurate diagnosis was not obtained pre-operatively. The site of impaction was not typical and a blind loop filled with contrast materials was evident. We believe that this is the first report demonstrating this rare condition with imaging.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the sensitivity of angiography in revealing the vitellointestinal artery or other arteriographic abnormalities in patients in whom surgery subsequently proved Meckel's diverticulum.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From the 36 patients who had undergone a Meckel's diverticulectomy between 1980 and 1997 at Hammersmith Hospital or a referring hospital, we selected 18 who had undergone preoperative angiography at our institution. Case notes and angiograms of these 18 patients were reviewed for the presence of a persistent vitellointestinal artery or other

Intussusception secondary to an inverted Meckel's diverticulum is considered to be a rare occurrence. The pathophysiology of the disease process results in a complicated clinical picture of chronic abdominal pain, lower gastrointestinal bleeding, and recurrent obstructive symptoms that may lead to an unnecessary delay in diagnosis. A case of an inverted Meckel's diverticulum as a lead point for an ileocolic intussusception in an adult is presented. The methods of diagnosis and the salient concepts in the surgical management of intussusception are discussed. Special features regarding the patho

Laparoscopic procedures incur risks and complications that differ from their "open" counterparts. Although rare, injury to asymptomatic umbilical remnants (eg, Meckel's diverticulum) is one of these unique complications.
