Endometriosis in the black woman.

Endometriosis has heretofore been considered rare in black women. Laparoscopy in 190 black women, in many of whom pelvic inflammatory disease was previously diagnosed clinically and treated, revealed endometriosis to be present in 21 per cent. The importance of this finding for clinical practice is discussed.

Effect of synthetic luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LH/FSH-RH) in women with menstrual disorders.

Synthetic luteinizing hormone/follicle stimulating hormone-releasing hormone (LH/FSH-RH) (50 mug) was given intravenously to six women with oligomenorrhoea and to four women with secondary amenorrhoea. Peripheral venous blood was withdrawn at regular intervals over a 24-hour period. The concentrations of LH, FSH, and oestradiol-17beta were determined by radioimmunoassay. In all subjects there was a variable rise in LH (3-16 times the mean basal level): in six a small rise in FSH (two to three times the mean basal level) and in seven a twofold to threefold rise in oestradiol three to eight hour

The Menstrual Endometrium: From Physiology to Future Treatments.

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is experienced by up to a third of women of reproductive age. It can cause anaemia and often results in decreased quality of life. A range of medical and surgical treatments are available but are associated with side effects and variable effectiveness. To improve the lives of those suffering from menstrual disorders, delineation of endometrial physiology is required. This allows an increased understanding of how this physiology may be disturbed, leading to uterine pathologies. In this way, more specific preventative and therapeutic strategies may be developed to

[Pituitary response to GnRH analogue testing in girls with a polycystic ovary syndrome].

UNLABELLED: THE AIM of our study was to estimate the gonadotropin level after GnRH analogue injection in girls with PCOS after suppression with dexamethasone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 57 girls with hirsutism, mean age 15.9 years, were involved in the study. The research was performed in the early and middle follicular stage. Menstrual disorders were observed in 78% of them. The patients were divided into 3 groups: I -- with clinical and laboratory symptoms of PCOS (menstruation disorders, testosterone >65 ng/ml and/or LH/FSH >2; n=29), II -- with menstruation disorders and without elevated andro

Investigation of dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls with familial Mediterranean fever: a comparative study with healthy controls.

UNLABELLED: Perimenstrual attacks have been reported in up to 15% of patients with FMF, suggesting that menstruation may be a trigger for FMF attacks. The aim of this study was to investigate menstrual period patterns and dysmenorrhea in adolescents with FMF in comparison to their healthy peers. This cross-sectional case-control study included 73 FMF patients and 70 age- and body mass index-matched controls. A structured questionnaire was designed to assess menstrual history, the frequency and severity of dysmenorrhea, symptoms related to dysmenorrhea, and the clinical features of FMF attacks.

Novel dietary FemTech based on dietary reference intakes for premenstrual and menstrual disorders: a pilot open-label randomized controlled trial of dietary intervention.

BACKGROUND: We developed novel Optimized Nutri-Dense Meals (Opti meals) for women based on Japanese dietary reference intakes (DRIs). We aimed to determine the effects of Opti meals on premenstrual disorder (PMD). METHOD: This pilot study was an open-label randomized controlled trial. One hundred women aged 20–45 years with PMD were enrolled in the study and randomly divided into two groups: habitual diet and intervention groups. In the intervention group, two meals per day for three menstrual cycles were replaced with Opti meals based on the Japanese DRIs. The Menstrual Distress Questionnaire

A survey assessing the impact of symptoms related to the menstrual cycle and perceptions of workplace productivity: considerations for employer-sponsored menstrual health programs.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal-related symptoms experienced during natural or contraceptive-driven menstrual cycles have implications on work-related productivity; however, employer-sponsored menstrual health resources are widely unavailable. Actionable research-based evidence is needed to develop menstrual health programs that proactively help working females mitigate their hormonal-related symptoms and optimize their hormone profiles and work-related performance. This study sought to evaluate the prevalence and severity of hormonal-related symptoms and assess the directional impact of hormonal-related

Underdiagnosis and impact of menstrual migraine in real-world clinical practice: A real-world survey.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the frequency of menstrual migraine (MM) reporting in clinical practice and to compare the clinical burden, treatment patterns, and patient satisfaction between those with and without MM. BACKGROUND: People with MM experience more severe, disabling, and prolonged attacks than people with non-MM. Research indicates that approximately two thirds of females with migraine may experience MM; however, the prevalence of MM is often underreported and there is a lack of awareness regarding the condition. METHODS: This study analyzed secondary da

Menstrual-related symptoms and absence from school among young people in Sweden: a stratified, randomized, population-based survey.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual-related symptoms such as menstrual pain and heavy bleeding impact individuals’ health, quality of life and can limit the ability to engage in daily life activities, including school. Menstrual-related symptoms thus risk reinforcing existing gender inequalities in health among young people, making it an issue of equal rights and public health concerns. No previous study has estimated the prevalence of menstrual-related symptoms and subsequent school absences in Sweden by using population-based data. METHODS: The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of menstrual-related s

BACKGROUND: Turner syndrome (TS), also known as congenital ovarian hypoplasia, is one of the most common sex chromosome diseases in women. It is caused by the complete or partial deletion or structural change of one X chromosome in all or part of somatic cells. A rare case of karyotype Turner syndrome is reported. METHODS: A 16-year-old female presented with oligomenorrhea and a history of menstrual irregularities. Menarche occurred at age 14, followed by only one menstrual period in the same year. Her second menstruation occurred a year later at age 15, with no menstruation thereafter. Perip

Clinical features, diagnostic approach, and outcome of imperforate hymen: A single institution case series.

BACKGROUND: Imperforate hymen is uncommon but it is one of the most common obstructive lesions of the female genital tract. Hydro/hematometrocolpos, derived from retained uterine and vaginal secretions and menstrual blood, causes various nonspecific symptoms. This study aimed to examine the clinical features, diagnostic approach, and outcomes of imperforate hymen at a single institution in Japan. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with imperforate hymen at Osaka Red Cross Hospital between January 2012 and November 2023. RESULTS: Six patients were identified. Five patients were

The effects of obesity on the menstrual cycle.

The prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity has significantly increased in the United States and worldwide since the 1970s, a trend that has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The complications of obesity range from negative effects on the cardiovascular, endocrine, hepatobiliary, and musculoskeletal systems to higher rates of mental health conditions such as depression and eating disorders among affected individuals. Among adolescent girls, childhood obesity has been associated with the earlier onset of puberty and menarche, which can result in negative psychosocial consequence
