Ventral striatal and caudate contributions to episodic retrieval.

Striatal activity during episodic memory retrieval is a robust phenomenon observed across various stimulus types and experimental paradigms. Previous research suggests that the ventral striatum and the caudate contribute differentially to retrieval processes: ventral striatal activity is posited to vary with the intrinsic reward of successful retrieval, whereas caudate activity is attributed to effortful cognitive control. The present fMRI study aimed to test the overarching hypothesis that these striatal subregions make distinct contributions to episodic retrieval and to further specify their

Psychological, social and pharmacological prevention and interventions for young people with emerging, subthreshold or diagnosed personality disorders: A systematic review.

Despite increasing recognition of personality disorder traits in adolescence, there is currently no systematic review that synthesises evidence across all intervention types and across the full spectrum of personality disorders in young people. This systematic review aims to describe existing psychological, psychosocial and pharmacological prevention and interventions for young people with PDs. Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were used to retrieve studies. Effective Public Health Practice Project and Critical Skills Appraisal tools was used to assess risk of bias. Studies were in

Dynamic Repertoire of Brain Networks in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy During Rumination: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a prevalent and debilitating affective disorder characterized by the dominance and persistence of depressive rumination. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is an effective treatment for recurrent depression developed specifically to target rumination and recurrence risk by training metacognitive awareness and adaptive attention, emotion, and self-regulation skills. However, the underlying mechanisms by which mindfulness training impacts maladaptive depressive rumination are not well understood, and a deeper understanding of its effects on the complex brain dyn

Connected by Boredom: A Systematic Review of the Role of Trait Boredom in Problematic Technology Use.

Background/Objectives: In an increasingly pervasive digital environment, trait boredom has been identified as a key psychological factor in the onset and maintenance of problematic digital technology use. This systematic review aims to investigate the role of trait boredom in digital behavioral addictions, including problematic smartphone use, Internet and social media overuse, and gaming addiction, through theoretical models such as the I-PACE model and the Compensatory Internet Use Theory (CIUT). Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple scientific databases (Psyc

Childhood sexual abuse in first-episode psychosis: The relevance in cognitive bias.

Cognitive biases and childhood trauma have been associated with psychotic outcomes; however, the combined effect of these two variables on psychosis has been minimally explored. This study investigates differences in cognitive biases and the presence of sexual abuse between people with first episode of psychosis (FEP) and healthy controls and explores the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and cognitive biases in individuals with FEP, controlling for sociodemographic and clinical confounders. A sample of 85 FEP patients and 87 healthy controls were assessed using the Spanish version o

Predicting emotional consequences of disorganization among adults with neurodevelopmental disorders: a structural equation model.

PURPOSE: Previous studies exhibited differences in sensory processing, motor coordination, metacognitive executive functions (EF-MI), and sleep quality among adults with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). This study aims to find relationships between those abilities and organization-in-time, focusing on emotional responses after decreased organization abilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of a larger sample from three previous studies conducted in one laboratory. Data were collected from 290 adults; 149 with NDD and 141 sex- and age- (20-50 years) matched contro

Expressive Suppression of Emotions in Bulimia Nervosa: An Electroencephalography Study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has found dysfunctional emotion regulation in bulimia nervosa (BN), including self-reported greater habitual use of maladaptive strategies such as suppression than in healthy individuals. However, there is no evidence on the performance in the implementation of expressive suppression in BN. The aim of this study was to investigate brain activity (in terms of ERP) and self-reported ratings associated with expressive suppression of emotions elicited by positive and negative stimuli in women with BN. METHOD: Event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded from 23 female

Variables Associated with Emotional Symptom Severity in Primary Care Patients: The Usefulness of a Logistic Regression Equation to Help Clinical Assessment and Treatment Decisions.

The aim of this study is to contribute to the evidence regarding variables related to emotional symptom severity and to use them to exemplify the potential usefulness of logistic regression for clinical assessment at primary care, where most of these disorders are treated. Cross-sectional data related to depression and anxiety symptoms, sociodemographic characteristics, quality of life (QoL), and emotion-regulation processes were collected from 1,704 primary care patients. Correlation and analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were conducted to identify those variables associated with both depress

Performing well but not appreciating it - A trait feature of anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in the etiology of anorexia nervosa (AN), a large subgroup of individuals does not profit optimally from treatment. Perfectionism has been found to be a risk factor predicting the onset, severity, and duration of AN episodes. To date, perfectionism has been studied predominantly by the use of self-report questionnaires, a useful approach that may, however, be impacted by demand characteristics, or other distortions of introspective or metacognitive access. METHODS: Here we circumvent these problems via a behavioral paradigm in which participants perform a modified

Self-awareness for financial decision making abilities is linked to right temporal cortical thickness in older adults.

Everyday financial decision making and the awareness of the integrity of one's financial decision making abilities (or financial awareness) are both critical to study in older adults as they can help identify those at risk for making suboptimal financial decisions and prevent financial loss. In the current study, we examined the cognitive and cortical thickness correlates of financial decision making and financial awareness in 59 community-dwelling participants co-enrolled in a larger study (mean age=68.35 years (SD=5.5), mean education=15.91 (SD=2.36), 61% = women, 67% = White, 30% = Black pa

Neuropsychological Research in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Current Status and Future Directions.

Neuropsychological functions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been extensively investigated. Despite some common findings across studies indicating deficient test performance across cognitive domains with small to medium effect sizes, results remain inconsistent and heterogeneous. However, multiple past attempts to identify moderators that may account for such variability have been unrewarding. Typical moderators including symptom severity, age at onset, medication status, and comorbid conditions failed to provide sufficient explanatory power. It has then been posited that these inc

Lessons in clinical reasoning ‒ pitfalls, myths and pearls: a case of recurrent pancreatitis.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive biases can result in clinical reasoning failures that can lead to diagnostic errors. Autobrewery syndrome is a rare, but likely underdiagnosed, condition in which gut flora ferment glucose, producing ethanol. It most frequently presents with unexplained episodes of inebriation, though more case studies are necessary to better characterize the syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case of a 41-year old male with a past medical history notable only for frequent sinus infections, who presented with recurrent episodes of acute pancreatitis. In the week prior to his first ep

Neural Correlates of Cognitive-Attentional Syndrome: An fMRI Study on Repetitive Negative Thinking Induction and Resting State Functional Connectivity.

AIM: Cognitive-attentional syndrome (CAS) is the main factor underlying depressive and anxiety disorders in the metacognitive approach to psychopathology and psychotherapy. This study explore neural correlates of this syndrome during induced negative thinking, abstract thinking, and resting states. METHODS: n = 25 people with high levels of CAS and n = 33 people with low levels of CAS were chosen from a population-based sample (N = 1225). These groups filled-in a series of measures of CAS, negative affect, and psychopathology; they also underwent a modified rumination induction procedure and

Fear of cancer recurrence: a theoretical review and novel cognitive processing formulation.

PURPOSE: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is prevalent among survivors. However, a comprehensive and universally accepted theoretical framework of FCR to guide intervention is lacking. This paper reviews theoretical frameworks previously used to explain FCR and describes the formulation of a novel theoretical framework for FCR. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was undertaken to identify conceptual frameworks or theories applied to FCR. MEDLINE, PubMED, CINAHL, AMED, PsycINFO and Web of Science were searched. Identified conceptual frameworks were reviewed for strength of evidence

Treatment-specific changes in decentering following mindfulness-based cognitive therapy versus antidepressant medication or placebo for prevention of depressive relapse.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether metacognitive psychological skills, acquired in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), are also present in patients receiving medication treatments for prevention of depressive relapse and whether these skills mediate MBCT's effectiveness. METHOD: This study, embedded within a randomized efficacy trial of MBCT, was the first to examine changes in mindfulness and decentering during 6-8 months of antidepressant treatment and then during an 18-month maintenance phase in which patients discontinued medication and received MBCT, continued on antidepressants, or w

Patients' medical knowledge and health counseling: what kind of information helps to make communication patient-centered?

OBJECTIVE: To examine how physicians use information about a patient's background knowledge when both anticipating what a patient knows and producing actual answers in an email counseling setting. METHODS: A fictitious patient used a (high vs. low) level of technical jargon in an email inquiry about diabetes and provided explicit information on prior knowledge (high vs. low) through self-report. Final-year medical students (semi-experts) were asked to gauge the patient's knowledge level (Experiment 1) and to produce an answer to the inquiry (Experiment 2). A total of N=150 participated in one

Deciphering auditory processing disorders in children.

APD is not a label for a unitary disease entity but rather a description of functional deficits [3]. It is a complex and heterogeneous group of auditory-specific disorders usually associated with a range of listening and learning deficits [3,4]. Underlying APD is a deficit observed in one or more of the auditory processes responsible for generating the auditory evoked potentials and the following behaviors: around localization and lateralization; auditory discrimination; auditory pattern recognition; temporal aspects of audition, including temporal resolution, masking, integration, and orderin

Dual-point sensory anchoring: emergent attentional coherence through embodied coupling.

Attentional instability is a persistent cognitive challenge in adult life, yet most existing interventions work through top-down regulatory pathways that require sustained effort, specialized instruction, or clinical access. This paper introduces Dual-Point Sensory Anchoring (DPSA), a sensorimotor paradigm proposing a different route: attentional stability engineered from the bottom up, through the continuous confirmation of low-level tactile-proprioceptive predictions instead of through metacognitive monitoring. The paradigm is organized around four interacting constraints: simultaneous bilat
