Subacute thyroiditis is a common inflammatory disorder of the thyroid gland, possibly of viral etiology, that typically presents with neck pain, fever and tenderness on palpation of the thyroid gland. BACKGROUND: The aim of this review was to delineate the characteristics of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated small-vessel vasculitis associated with antithyroid drugs (ATD). BACKGROUND: Antithyroid drugs have been used for more than 50 years for the management of hyperthyroidism. Most patients tolerate treatment well but some may develop life threatening side effects such as agranulocytosis and aplastic anemia (AA). A 31-year-old female was well until few years ago when she was diagnosed as having Graves' disease. Methimazole (MMI) and Lugol's solution were prescribed. But 7 months later, she stopped taking them arbitrarily. Three months later, thirst and general fatigue appeared. In 81 patients the thyrotoxicosis was controlled with antithyroid drugs only. Ophthalmopathy was seen in 53 patients when therapy was started. Patients with ophthalmopathy stage V or VI were excluded from this study. Maximal pathological eye signs were seen in 24 patients before starting therapy. Worsening occurred during treatment in 16 patients and some months after therapy was stopped in 13 patients. In summary, 40 patients passed a phase of subnormal thyroid hormone levels.
