Analyzing Impact of Mouthpiece-based Puff Topography Devices on Smoking Behavior using Wearable Sensors.

Detailed assessment of smoking topography (puffing and post-puffing metrics) can lead to a better understanding of factors that influence tobacco use. Research suggests that portable mouthpiece-based devices used for puff topography measurement may alter natural smoking behavior. This paper evaluated the impact of a portable puff topography device (CReSS Pocket) on puffing & post-puffing topography using a wearable system, the Personal Automatic Cigarette Tracker v2 (PACT 2.0) as a reference measurement. Data from 45 smokers who smoked one cigarette in the lab and an unrestricted number of cig

Machine learning-based detection of aberrant deep learning segmentations of target and organs at risk for prostate radiotherapy using a secondary segmentation algorithm.

Objective. The output of a deep learning (DL) auto-segmentation application should be reviewed, corrected if needed and approved before being used clinically. This verification procedure is labour-intensive, time-consuming and user-dependent, which potentially leads to significant errors with impact on the overall treatment quality. Additionally, when the time needed to correct auto-segmentations approaches the time to delineate target and organs at risk from scratch, the usability of the DL model can be questioned. Therefore, an automated quality assurance framework was developed with the aim

Hand Motion Analysis Illustrates Differences When Drilling Cadaveric and Printed Temporal Bone.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal bone simulation is now commonly used to augment cadaveric education. Assessment of these tools is ongoing, with haptic modeling illustrating dissimilar motion patterns compared to cadaveric opportunities. This has the potential to result in maladaptive skill development. It is hypothesized that trainee drill motion patterns during printed model dissection may likewise demonstrate dissimilar hand motion patterns. METHODS: Resident surgeons dissected 3D-printed temporal bones generated from microCT data and cadaveric simulations. A magnetic position tracking system (TrakSTAR

Correlation of Tumor Hypoxia Metrics Derived from 18F-Fluoromisonidazole Positron Emission Tomography and Pimonidazole Fluorescence Images of Optically Cleared Brain Tissue.

18F-fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) positron emission tomography (PET) is a widely used noninvasive imaging modality for assessing hypoxia. We describe the first spatial comparison of FMISO PET with an ex vivo reference standard for hypoxia across whole tumor volumes. Eighteen rats were orthotopically implanted with C6 or 9L brain tumors and made to undergo FMISO PET scanning. Whole brains were excised, sliced into 1-mm-thick sections, optically cleared, and fluorescently imaged for pimonidazole using an in vivo imaging system. FMISO maximum tumor uptake, maximum tumor-to-cerebellar uptake (TCmax),

Personalized Approach for the Management of Exercise-Related Glycemic Imbalances in Type 1 Diabetes: Comparison with Reference Method.

BACKGROUND: One of the most frequently adopted strategies to counterbalance the risk of exercise-induced hypoglycemia in patients with type 1 diabetes is carbohydrates supplement. Nevertheless, the estimation of its amount is still challenging. We investigated the efficacy of the personalized Exercise Carbohydrate Requirement Estimation System (ECRES) method compared to a tabular approach to estimate the glucose supplement needed for the prevention of exercise-related glycemic imbalances. METHOD: Twenty-six patients performed two one-hour constant intensity exercises one week apart; the amoun

Doctor hopping and doctor shopping for prescription opioids associated with increased odds of high-risk use.

PURPOSE: Early detection of risky behaviors involving prescription opioids can assist prescribers in implementing safer prescribing. Patient-to-prescriber travel patterns may indicate potential opioid misuse. We introduce doctor hopping, patients bypassing nearby prescribers in favor of more distant ones, as a new spatial estimation of potentially risky behavior, and compare with traditional doctor shopping metrics. METHODS: We examined all filled opioid prescriptions between 2015 and 2016 from the Arkansas Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. We calculated patient-to-prescriber travel times

A longitudinal analysis of adolescent decision-making with the Iowa Gambling Task.

Many researchers have used the standard Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) to assess decision-making in adolescence given increased risk-taking during this developmental period. Most studies are cross-sectional and do not observe behavioral trajectories over time, limiting interpretation. This longitudinal study investigated healthy adolescents' and young adults' IGT performance across a 10-year span. A total of 189 individuals (aged 9-23 at baseline) completed a baseline session and were followed at 2-year intervals yielding 5 time-points. IGT deck contingencies were shuffled over time to reduce practi

A two-dimensional deformable phantom for quantitatively verifying deformation algorithms.

PURPOSE: The incorporation of deformable image registration into the treatment planning process is rapidly advancing. For this reason, the methods used to verify the underlying deformation algorithms must evolve equally fast. This manuscript proposes a two-dimensional deformable phantom, which can objectively verify the accuracy of deformation algorithms, as the next step for improving these techniques. METHODS: The phantom represents a single plane of the anatomy for a head and neck patient. Inflation of a balloon catheter inside the phantom simulates tumor growth. CT and camera images of th

Maximizing your return on people.

Though most traditional HR performance metrics don't predict organizational performance, alternatives simply have not existed--until now. During the past ten years, researchers Laurie Bassi and Daniel McMurrer have worked to develop a system that allows executives to assess human capital management (HCM) and to use those metrics both to predict organizational performance and to guide organizations' investments in people. The new framework is based on a core set of HCM drivers that fall into five major categories: leadership practices, employee engagement, knowledge accessibility, workforce opt

Role of artificial intelligence in teledentistry diagnosis and treatment planning.

Limited access to dental specialists delays accurate diagnosis and treatment planning in remote and underserved populations. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the reliability of an artificial intelligence system for remote dental diagnosis and treatment planning using intraoral images, panoramic radiographs and clinical histories from 320 patients. AI-generated outputs were compared with independent assessments by three board-certified dentists using Cohen's kappa, sensitivity and specificity metrics. The system achieved 93.2% agreement for caries detection, 89.1% for periodontal assess

Deep Learning-Based Automated Reports for Breast Density Assessment in Mammography Images.

Breast density is a key factor in mammographic screening, as high-density tissue increases cancer risk and can obscure lesions, reducing diagnostic sensitivity. This work presents a deep learning-based framework for automated breast density assessment in mammography, combining BI-RADS classification and dense fibroglandular tissue segmentation. To improve data diversity and mitigate class imbalance, we construct a fusion dataset from different sources and introduce manually refined classification and segmentation annotations. The framework generates structured reports that combine visualizatio

Breaking the Zero Dimensional Illusion in Te(IV) Metal Halide Hybrids via Electronic Dimensionality Control.

Zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide hybrids (MHHs) containing ns2 metal ions are attractive solid-state emitters, yet their photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) often vary unpredictably even among structurally similar systems. To identify the factors governing emissivity, we investigate a series of 0D Te(IV)-based hybrids, A2TeCl6 (A+ = BzEt3N+, BzMe2PhN+, Ph4P+, Ph3EtP+), which exhibit nearly identical optical features but display large differences in PLQY and lifetimes. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Hirshfeld surface analysis, and Voronoi polyhedral mapping reveal that these variation

Altered aperiodic EEG spectral power during speech perception task is associated with verbal communication in youths with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have co-occurring language impairment, but its neural mechanisms are not well known. Excitation (E) / inhibition (I) imbalance is considered as a key neurobiological mechanism of ASD, and several electroencephalography (EEG)-based E/I balance metrics have been proposed in the previous studies. The goal of the present research was to focus on these metrics abstracted from the speech perception task to investigate their relation to language/communication in autistic youths. We used a high-density 128-channel EEG to register neural responses durin

Establishment of preliminary diagnostic reference levels for 18F-FDG PET/CT in adult lymphoma in Costa Rica.

Diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for positron emission tomography (PET/CT) examinations have not previously been established in Costa Rica, and data from Central America remain limited due to the restricted availability of PET/CT systems in the region. This study established local DRLs for administered 18F-FDG activity and CT dose metrics in 393 adult lymphoma patients undergoing PET/CT at the Cyclotron-PET/CT Laboratory (Centro de Investigación en Ciencias Atómicas, Nucleares y Moleculares), University of Costa Rica. DRLs were defined as the 75th percentile (P75), and the influence of patie

On Evaluating Black-Box Explainable AI Methods for Enhancing Anomaly Detection in Autonomous Driving Systems.

The recent advancements in autonomous driving come with the associated cybersecurity issue of compromising networks of autonomous vehicles (AVs), motivating the use of AI models for detecting anomalies on these networks. In this context, the usage of explainable AI (XAI) for explaining the behavior of these anomaly detection AI models is crucial. This work introduces a comprehensive framework to assess black-box XAI techniques for anomaly detection within AVs, facilitating the examination of both global and local XAI methods to elucidate the decisions made by XAI techniques that explain the be

A Fair Performance Comparison between Complex-Valued and Real-Valued Neural Networks for Disease Detection.

Our aim is to contribute to the classification of anomalous patterns in biosignals using this novel approach. We specifically focus on melanoma and heart murmurs. We use a comparative study of two convolution networks in the Complex and Real numerical domains. The idea is to obtain a powerful approach for building portable systems for early disease detection. Two similar algorithmic structures were chosen so that there is no bias determined by the number of parameters to train. Three clinical data sets, ISIC2017, PH2, and Pascal, were used to carry out the experiments. Mean comparison hypothes
