Sarolaner/selamectin spot-on: An effective treatment of generalized demodicosis due to Demodex cati in a cat.

Feline demodicosis is a rare parasitic skin disease. The clinical signs, which may range from mild and localized to severe and generalized, include alopecia, erythema, macules, pruritus, and hyperpigmentation. Although many studies have evaluated the safety and efficacy of different miticidal agents for canine demodicosis, there have been no controlled or conclusive studies on feline infection. Recommended medications for cats include organophosphates, lime sulfur, some macrocylic lactones, and isoxazolines, which may be administered as rinse, injection, oral or spot-on formulations. Pathogenicity analysis and control strategies to combat avian diseases: mechanisms of increased virulence of Marek's disease virus and the development of vaccines against poultry red mites.

The occurrence of avian diseases has been greatly reduced by improved sanitation on poultry farms and the development of prevention programs through vaccination and other measures. However, the poultry industry still faces several concerns. Marek's disease (MD) has caused significant economic losses to the poultry industry in the past; however, the introduction of vaccines has successfully contributed to a reduction in MD occurrences. Nevertheless, sporadic MD occurrences are still observed, and increased virulence has been reported owing to the changes in viral characteristics. In addition to

Characterization of cysteine proteases from poultry red mite, tropical fowl mite, and northern fowl mite to assess the feasibility of developing a broadly efficacious vaccine against multiple mite species.

Infestation with poultry red mites (PRM, Dermanyssus gallinae) causes anemia, reduced egg production, and death in serious cases, resulting in significant economic losses to the poultry industry. As a novel strategy for controlling PRMs, vaccine approaches have been focused upon and several candidate vaccine antigens against PRMs have been reported. Tropical (TFM, Ornithonyssus bursa) and northern (NFM, Ornithonyssus sylviarum) fowl mites are also hematophagous and cause poultry industry problems similar to those caused by PRM. Therefore, ideal antigens for anti-PRM vaccines are molecules that

Comorbidity of Ocular and Facial Demodicosis.

PURPOSE: To determine the association between ocular and facial demodicosis, and the effect of facial treatment on ocular demodicosis. DESIGN: Prospective clinical cohort study. METHODS: Ocular demodicosis outpatients from a tertiary medical center were enrolled from April to December 2020. The diagnosis was based on epilation of 4 eyelashes from each upper eyelid. High ocular Demodex load (ODL) was defined as ≥8 mites per eye. Facial infestation was assessed by direct microscopic examination, with facial Demodex overgrowth (FDO) defined as a density >5 mites/cm2. All patients were prescribe

Laboratory and field efficacy of terpene combinations (carvacrol, thymol and menthol) against the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae).

In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of combinations of the terpenes carvacrol, thymol, and menthol on Dermanyssus gallinae under in vitro (direct contact and vapour efficacy assays) and in-use conditions. Combinations investigated in vitro included carvacrol-menthol, thymol-menthol, carvacrol-thymol, and carvacrol-thymol-menthol. Results from contact efficacy studies showed that carvacrol-thymol-menthol was the most efficacious compared to the other combinations (P < 0.05), killing 100 % of the mites when at a concentration of 0.5 μg/mL. Thymol-menthol showed the weakest acaricidal activi

Identification of guanine and hematin as arrestment pheromones of poultry red mites, Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae) and their application in mite control.

Dermanyssus gallinae, also known as the poultry red mite (PRM), is one of widespread ectoparasite in the poultry industry worldwide, causing direct and indirect detriments to poultry as well as substantial financial losses. Novel control methods are urgently needed to improve the current acaricide-based control of D. gallinae. The control approach based on arrestment pheromone is environment-friendly but the related research is limited in PRMs. In the present study we found two compounds from the mite feces acting as arrestment pheromones of D. gallinae, which could lead to mite arrestment upo

Repellent activity of desiccant dusts and conidia of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana when tested against poultry red mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) in laboratory experiments.

Desiccant dusts and entomopathogenic fungi have previously been found to hold potential against the poultry red mite, which is an important pest in egg production and notoriously difficult to control. Both control agents may cause repellence in other arthropods and potentially also influence control levels adversely when used against the poultry red mite. Five desiccant dust products with good efficacy against the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae caused avoidance behavior in mites when tested in bioassays. The repellent activity was correlated with efficacy, which was found to depend on b

First description of demodicosis in 12 galagos (Galago senegalensis).

Twelve Galago senegalensis from the Moscow Zoo were presented with papular to nodular (2-11 mm) lesions on the pinnae, containing a white, waxy material. Microscopic examination revealed large numbers of mites consistent with the morphology of Demodex spp. mites. Nine animals were treated with ivermectin, 600 μg/kg/day topically, orally or subcutaneously for 3-10 months, while one remained untreated. All the treated animals achieved clinical remission. The control animal was still affected and died 11 months later due to pneumonia and possible eosinophilic leukaemia. No adverse effects were no

[The use of avermectins in two goats with demodicosis].

This case report describes the treatment of demodicosis (Demodex caprae) in 2 goats. The entire body surface of both goats was scattered with lens-large nodes from which pasty secretion emptied itself during palpation. One goat was administered 0.67 mg/kg Ivermectin orally once weekly for 12 weeks, the other goat was treated with 0.5 mg/kg Eprinomectin pour-on. The treatment led to an entire healing without any scar formation or depigmentations of the skin.

Clinical applications of topical ivermectin in dermatology.

Ivermectin (IVM) is a broad-spectrum anti-parasitic drug with significant anti-inflammatory properties. The emergence of treatment resistance to lindane, permethrin, and possibly malathion complicates the global strategy for management of common parasitic skin diseases such as scabies and head lice. In this regard. IVM has been safely and effectively used in the treatment of these common human infestations. In addition, IVM may be useful in inflammatory cutaneous disorders such as papulopustular rosacea where demodex may play a role in pathogenesis. Herein, we review the current applications o

Single oral-dose fluralaner treatment against Ophionyssus natricis infestation - a large scale study demostrating long-term efficacy in captive snakes.

The hematophagous mite Ophionyssus natricis, vector of several viral and bacterial diseases in snakes, is one of the most challenging pathogens for snake breeders. The high environmental resistance of its larval stage makes repeated treatment of the animals unavoidable, while eradication of the mites from enclosures requires extensive cleansing and disinfection, often involving chemical products with known toxicity. The use of ectoparasiticides of the family of isoxazoline have recently proved effective against both adult and larvae of O. natricis, nevertheless data for fluralaner remains limi

Lithium chloride effectively kills the honey bee parasite Varroa destructor by a systemic mode of action.

Honey bees are increasingly important in the pollination of crops and wild plants. Recent reports of the weakening and periodical high losses of managed honey bee colonies have alarmed beekeeper, farmers and scientists. Infestations with the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor in combination with its associated viruses have been identified as a crucial driver of these health problems. Although yearly treatments are required to prevent collapses of honey bee colonies, the number of effective acaricides is small and no new active compounds have been registered in the past 25 years. Nosocomial transmission and infection control aspects of parasitic and ectoparasitic diseases. Part III. Ectoparasites/summary and conclusions.

As a rule, both the standard of hygiene and sanitation prevalent in hospitals in the United States and the rarity of parasitic diseases compared to viral, bacterial, and fungal infections, reduce the hazard of nosocomial acquisition of parasites to relatively trivial levels. However, abetted by the resultant low index of suspicion on the part of clinical staff, certain parasitic microorganisms may at times cause significant morbidity and even mortality in both normal and immunocompromised patients, as summarized in this review. Also, the nosocomial acquisition of parasites may be somewhat unde
