Effects of acceptance and commitment therapy for family caregivers of persons with dementia: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: With the rapid ageing of the global population, the number of persons with dementia (PwDs) is increasing, placing substantial psychological and physical burdens on family caregivers. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a mindfulness and values-based psychological intervention, has shown potential in improving mental health outcomes across various populations. However, its effectiveness, specifically for dementia family caregivers, remains to be systematically evaluated. This review aims to evaluate the effects of ACT on psychological outcomes (eg, depression, anxiety, psycho

Prioritising Psychological Prehabilitation Interventions for Cancer Surgery: An International Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative mental wellbeing is an important determinant of postoperative recovery, yet psychological care is frequently overlooked within multidisciplinary prehabilitation programmes. When included, psychological interventions are fragmented and inconsistently delivered. This study aimed to establish international multidisciplinary consensus on preferred psychological prehabilitation interventions for patients undergoing urogenital, thoracic or gastrointestinal cancer surgery, and to describe current practice. METHODS: A three-round Delphi was conducted between February and Sept

Psychological Resilience to Trauma and Risk of Metabolic Syndrome in Women.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests an association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) but has not disentangled effects of trauma exposure, PTSD, and psychological resilience following trauma. This study investigated risk of MetS by psychological resilience following trauma exposure. METHODS: Data are from 42,425 women in the Nurses' Health Study II who completed a survey in 2008 evaluating PTSD symptoms, psychological distress, facets of positive psychological well-being (PWB), and a broad range of covariates. Psychological resilience to trauma was ch

Impairments in psychological functioning in refugees and asylum seekers.

Refugees are at increased risk for developing psychological impairments due to stressors in the pre-, peri- and post-migration periods. There is limited knowledge on how everyday functioning is affected by migration experience. In a secondary analysis of a study in a sample of refugees and asylum seekers, it was examined how aspects of psychological functioning were differentially affected. 1,101 eligible refugees and asylum seekers in Europe and Türkiye were included in a cross-sectional analysis. Gender, age, education, number of relatives and children living nearby, as well as indicators fo

Interaction analyses: Enhancing understanding of chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is complex. Statistical examination of influences of exposures (e.g. characteristics) upon outcomes (e.g. pain) facilitates understanding of complexity and personalized care. Psychological factors may be associated with higher disability following exercise in CLBP. Examining interactions of psychological variables with exercise on disability might further understanding of CLBP. OBJECTIVES: Secondary analysis of data from a CLBP cohort evaluating interactions between psychological variables and exercise on disability. DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study.

The Impact of Psychological Capital and Workplace Social Support on Pediatric Oncology Nurses' Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Symptomology.

Introduction: Work-related post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop in nurses. Pediatric oncology nursing is a potentially high-risk subspecialty for PTSD secondary to the nature of the work. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of PTSD symptomology and explore relationships between nurse psychological capital, workplace social supports, and PTSD symptomology in pediatric oncology nurses. Methods: The study utilized a cross-sectional correlational survey design. Pediatric oncology nurses working in direct patient care in the United States completed a demographics questionnaire,

Psychological comorbidities and functional neurological disorders in women with idiopathic urinary retention: International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS) 2019.

AIMS: Chronic urinary retention occurring in young women is poorly understood and a cause may not be found in a majority of cases. Different psychological comorbidities and functional neurological symptom disorders (FNDs) have been reported; however, these have been poorly explored. METHODS: At the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society meeting in 2019, a panel of clinicians generated a proposal to explore the relationship between psychological comorbidities, FNDs, and urinary retention in women with chronic idiopathic urinary retention. RESULTS: Psychological comorbidit

Psychological Suffering in Essential Tremor: A Study of Patients and Those Who Are Close to Them.

BACKGROUND: Although the motor and non-motor features of essential tremor (ET) have been characterized in detail, it is not known whether ET patients suffer psychologically and whether those who are close to them consider them to be suffering in this way. METHODS: Fifty ET patients and 50 "close others" (COs), identified by patients "as someone who knows you well and sees you often" and who can "provide a different perspective on your well-being", reported their own depressive symptoms, daily stress, and perceptions of patient psychological suffering and patient overall suffering with validat

Psychological inflexibility and depressive symptoms as key correlates of suicidal risk among university students in a U.S.-Mexico border city.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal risk among university students remains a pressing public health concern, particularly in high-stress border contexts. While depressive symptoms are well-established correlates of suicidal risk, the adjusted association of psychological inflexibility and the potential roles of resilience and perceived social support remain underexplored among university students in structurally stressed regions. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether psychological inflexibility was independently associated with suicidal risk beyond depressive symptoms and assessed whether resilience and pe

Comparisons of psychological distress and self-stigma among three types of substance use disorders receiving treatment-as-usual approaches: real-world data from a 9-month longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is an important issue worldwide and people with substance use disorders (SUDs) have been reported to have high levels of psychological distress and self-stigma. Therefore, psychological distress and self-stigma in people with SUDs are considerable. OBJECTIVE: The present study used a longitudinal design to examine whether treatment-as-usual approaches in Taiwan improve psychological distress and self-stigma among people with three types of SUDs (heroin, amphetamine, and alcohol use disorders). DESIGN: A 9-month longitudinal design involving four assessments spaced 3

Relationships between hope and mental health among women in prison.

BACKGROUND: Previous research with non-offenders has linked a higher dispositional cognition of hope to lower levels of psychological symptoms and demonstrated mediating effects of attentional biases on the relationship between hope and psychological symptoms, but this has not been explored among offenders. AIMS: Our aim was to investigate associations between a dispositional cognition of hope and habitual attentional processing styles and distress among women in prison. We hypothesised that higher levels of hope would be associated with more attention to positive information and less to nega

Surgically and conservatively treated obese patients differ in psychological factors, regardless of body mass index or obesity-related co-morbidities: a comparison between groups and an analysis of predictors.

OBJECTIVE: For the treatment of obesity, both conservative and surgical procedures are available. Psychological factors are likely to influence the choice of treatment; however, to date, systematic studies that investigate these factors are few in number. The aim of our study was to analyze whether patients who undergo a surgical treatment differ from those who require a conservative treatment in regard to psychological factors, regardless of their somatic conditions. Furthermore, predictors of treatment choice will be examined. METHODS: A total of 244 patients (189 women), with a mean body m

Mathematics anxiety and self-efficacy among students in Hong Kong and Macao (China): socioeconomic disadvantage as a moderator of academic achievement.

PURPOSE: This study examines whether socioeconomic disadvantage alters the associations of mathematics anxiety and mathematics-specific self-efficacy with mathematics achievement among adolescents in Hong Kong (China) and Macao (China). The research problem is not whether anxiety, efficacy, and socioeconomic status are individually related to achievement; those relationships are already well established. The unresolved question is whether socioeconomic disadvantage functions as a boundary condition on the two psychological-achievement slopes when anxiety and self-efficacy are modeled jointly.

Mental health of adolescent mothers.

OBJECTIVE: To propose an assessment and intervention model for adolescent mothers that evaluates the influence of physical, cognitive, affective, and interpersonal development on such areas of psychological dysfunction as unprotected sexual activity, substance abuse, and psychopathology. METHOD: More than 100 studies were reviewed to identify correlations between discrete developmental events and evidence of psychological dysfunction in adolescent mothers. RESULTS: The adolescent's nascent developmental skill in one domain of functioning (e.g., cognitive) frequently exerts a synergistic effe

The health and well-being of caregivers of children with cerebral palsy.

OBJECTIVE: Most children enjoy healthy childhoods with little need for specialized health care services. However, some children experience difficulties in early childhood and require access to and utilization of considerable health care resources over time. Although impaired motor function is the hallmark of the cerebral palsy (CP) syndromes, many children with this development disorder also experience sensory, communicative, and intellectual impairments and may have complex limitations in self-care functions. Although caregiving is a normal part of being the parent of a young child, this role

From community support to subjective well-being: an integrative moderated mediation model of resilience and parenting stress in rural contexts.

BACKGROUND: Amidst rural revitalization, parents in rural areas navigate the complex dual responsibilities of structural socio-economic transition and intensive family education. While subjective well-being (SWB) is a critical indicator of parental psychological health, the statistical pathways that may account for the association between external community resources and internal well-being-and the boundary conditions of this process-remained underexplored. METHODS: Drawing upon the Family Demands-Resources (FD-R) model and Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study proposed and teste

Relationships between disease severity, psychological stress, and health-related quality of life among patients with acute coronary syndrome: mediation of illness perception.

AIMS: Patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) often experience reduced health-related quality of life (HRQOL), which may be attributable to the disease severity and psychological stress. While illness perception is speculated to be a potential pathway underlying these relationships, evidence supporting this mechanism remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between disease severity, psychological stress, and HRQOL and whether these relationships are mediated by illness perception in patients with ACS. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were collected from June to July 201
