BACKGROUND: Scientific debate has long surrounded whether agoraphobia is a severe consequence of panic disorder or a frequently comorbid diagnosis. Multivariate comorbidity investigations typically treat these diagnoses as fungible in structural models, assuming both are manifestations of the fear-subfactor in the internalizing-externalizing model. No studies have directly compared these disorders' multivariate associations, which could clarify their conceptualization in classification and comorbidity research.
METHODS: In a nationally representative sample (N=43,093), we examined the multiva

OBJECTIVE: Missing outcome data are a common problem in clinical trials and systematic reviews, as it compromises inferences by reducing precision and potentially biasing the results. Systematic reviewers often assume that the missing outcome problem has been resolved at the trial level. However, in many clinical trials a complete case analysis or suboptimal imputation techniques are employed and the problem is accumulated in a quantitative synthesis of trials via meta-analysis. The risk of bias due to missing data depends on the missingness mechanism. Most statistical analyses assume missing

Sensitivity and specificity are common measures of the accuracy of a diagnostic test. The usual estimators of these quantities are unbiased if data on the diagnostic test result and the true disease status are obtained from all subjects in an appropriately selected sample. In some studies, verification of the true disease status is performed only for a subset of subjects, possibly depending on the result of the diagnostic test and other characteristics of the subjects. Estimators of sensitivity and specificity based on this subset of subjects are typically biased; this is known as verification

A typical recurrent event dataset consists of an often large number of recurrent event processes, each of which contains multiple event times observed from an individual during a follow-up period. Such data have become increasingly available in medical and epidemiological studies. In this article, we introduce novel procedures to conduct second-order analysis for a flexible class of semiparametric recurrent event processes. Such an analysis can provide useful information regarding the dependence structure within each recurrent event process. Specifically, we will use the proposed procedures to

This paper explores the utility of different approaches for modeling longitudinal count data with dropouts arising from a clinical study for the treatment of actinic keratosis lesions on the face and balding scalp. A feature of these data is that as the disease for subjects on the active arm improves their data show larger dispersion compared with those on the vehicle, exhibiting an over-dispersion relative to the Poisson distribution. After fitting the marginal (or population averaged) model using the generalized estimating equation (GEE), we note that inferences from such a model might be bi

Several approaches have been proposed to analyze clustered binary data, which arise in fields such as teratology and ophthalmology. These methods include mixed-effects and quasi-likelihood approaches, as well as models that use cluster responses as covariates. The three approaches measure different effects of covariates on binary responses, but simple approximations relate the magnitudes of their parameters. In this article, we present approximations to relate the standard errors of model parameters and Wald tests for covariate effects obtained from the different approaches. These approximatio

Statistical time-series analyses of single case data allow a sophisticated person-centered evaluation of therapeutic effects. The possibilities and limitations of a new method of time series analysis are shown by the example of mood curves of neurotic depressive patients. The HTAKA model seems advantageous, because this procedure is less restrictive than other methods as regards the data basis. The cluster-analytical agglomeration of the single-case results indicates a sufficient response to antidepressants in about 40% of the patients who were treated with antidepressants in addition to psych

Out of a consecutive series of 698 cases of squamous cell carcinomas of the tonsillar region treated by radical megavoltage radiotherapy, a determinate group of 465 cases remained eligible for a multivariate analysis of the pretreatment features of the disease and treatment-related parameters predictive of lasting control of the disease at the primary site. T-stage and initial site within the tonsillar region, were the significant pretreatment factors. Tumours arising from the glossopalatine sulcus which are characterized by involvement of the tongue, do significantly worse than those arising

Interactions and correlations among features are essential in biology, as well as in other fields. This article introduces a novel approach for linear interaction models characterized by complex correlation structures. By integrating local linear approximation and Laplacian smoothing penalty with l1 or l1 and l2 penalties, our methods effectively estimate and predict highly correlated interaction models. Theoretical analysis confirms that both methods converge to an oracle solution within two iterations, demonstrating a rapid convergence rate. In simulation studies, our proposed methods outper

Scrub typhus is a deadly infectious disease that is frequently underdiagnosed. Forecasting the emergence of infectious diseases using epidemiological models has emerged as a crucial instrument for comprehending the dynamics of their occurrence. This research aimed to investigate epidemic traits and create a predictive model for scrub typhus in mainland China, employing the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) time series method. Monthly records of scrub typhus cases were gathered from the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, covering the timeframe from 2006 to

Longitudinal observational data on patients can be used to investigate causal effects of time-varying treatments on time-to-event outcomes. Several methods have been developed for estimating such effects by controlling for the time-dependent confounding that typically occurs. The most commonly used is marginal structural models (MSM) estimated using inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTW) (MSM-IPTW). An alternative, the sequential trials approach, is increasingly popular, and involves creating a sequence of "trials" from new time origins and comparing treatment initiators and non-initi

Estimating population-level effects of a vaccine is challenging because there may be interference, that is, the outcome of one individual may depend on the vaccination status of another individual. Partial interference occurs when individuals can be partitioned into groups such that interference occurs only within groups. In the absence of interference, inverse probability weighted (IPW) estimators are commonly used to draw inference about causal effects of an exposure or treatment. Tchetgen Tchetgen and VanderWeele proposed a modified IPW estimator for causal effects in the presence of partia

This paper considers multiple imputation (MI) approaches for handling non-monotone missing longitudinal binary responses when estimating parameters of a marginal model using generalized estimating equations (GEE). GEE has been shown to yield consistent estimates of the regression parameters for a marginal model when data are missing completely at random (MCAR). However, when data are missing at random (MAR), the GEE estimates may not be consistent; the MI approaches proposed in this paper minimize bias under MAR. The first MI approach proposed is based on a multivariate normal distribution, bu

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a rodent-borne disease of natural infectious focus caused by Hantavirus (HV) with clinical characteristics as fever, hemorrhage, hyperemia, hypotensive shock and renal damage. Through contacting the excreta or secretion of infected rats, human may get infected. The epidemiological characteristics of HFRS are significantly different in terms of population differences, geographical heterogeneity and seasonal variation, which are all closely related to the habitat of host animals and human productive activities. The reported number of HFRS is about

Inflammatory responses to an infection from a zoonotic pathogen, such as avian influenza viruses, hantaviruses and some coronaviruses, are distinctly different in their natural reservoir versus human host. While not as well studied in the natural reservoirs, the pro-inflammatory response and viral replication appear controlled and show no obvious pathology. In contrast, infection in humans results in an initial high viral load marked by an aggressive pro-inflammatory response known as a cytokine storm. The key difference in the course of the infection between the reservoir and human host is th

Viral transneuronal tracing methods effectively label synaptically connected neurons in a time-dependent manner. However, the modeling of viral vectors has been largely absent. An objective of this article is to motivate and initiate a basis for computational modeling of viral labeling and the questions that can be investigated through modeling of pseudorabies virus (PRV) virion progression in a neural circuit. In particular, a mathematical model is developed for quantitative analysis of PRV infection. Probability expressions are presented to evaluate the progression of viral labeling along th

BACKGROUND: Research interventions at the family level often include individual- and group-level data that can present an analytic challenge. The study that motivated this article was an intervention study conducted with elementary school children and their parents. Randomization occurred at the school level, with families nested within schools. Repeated measurements collected from children and parents at different time points presented modeling challenges, including how to specify the covariance structure correctly among all measurements.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to introduce a

Case series methodology involves the systematic assessment of a sample of related patients, with the goal of understanding how and why they differ from one another. This method has become increasingly important in cognitive neuropsychology, which has long been identified with single-subject research. We review case series studies dealing with impaired semantic memory, reading, and language production and draw attention to the affinity of this methodology for testing theories that are expressed as computational models and for addressing questions about neuroanatomy. It is concluded that case se

Matrix factorization techniques have been frequently applied in information retrieval, computer vision, and pattern recognition. Among them, Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) has received considerable attention due to its psychological and physiological interpretation of naturally occurring data whose representation may be parts based in the human brain. On the other hand, from the geometric perspective, the data is usually sampled from a low-dimensional manifold embedded in a high-dimensional ambient space. One then hopes to find a compact representation, which uncovers the hidden semanti

PURPOSE: A comparative study of the ability of some modal schemes to reproduce corneal shapes of varying complexity was performed, by using both standard radial polynomials and radial basis functions (RBFs). The hypothesis was that the correct approach in the case of highly irregular corneas should combine several bases.
METHODS: Standard approaches of reconstruction by Zernike and other types of radial polynomials were compared with the discrete least-squares fit (LSF) by the RBF in three theoretical surfaces, synthetically generated by computer algorithms in the absence of measurement noise
