This study investigated cues that permit prediction of turns during passive movement through a virtual environment. Effects on simulator sickness (SS), presence and enjoyment were examined. Subjects were exposed to complex visual motion through a cartoon-like simulated environment in a driving simulator. PURPOSE: This study investigated the physiological correlates of motion sickness provoked by viewing an optokinetic rotating drum.
METHOD: A total of 52 subjects viewed an optokinetic rotating drum for 16 min. Subjective symptoms of motion sickness (SSMS) and ratings of over-all sickness were measured during the drum rotation. Freely moving rats were exposed to 2 g hypergravity in an animal centrifuge device to produce motion sickness. Histamine release from the anterior hypothalamus of the rats was measured in vivo with a microdialysis technique. After a 2-h load of 2 g hypergravity, rats ate kaolin. Motion sickness is associated with gastric slow wave disruption. Animal models of slow wave disturbances show dependence on neural and prostaglandin pathways. Roles of these pathways in circular vection-evoked gastric dysrhythmias and nausea were tested. Judgments of the visual vertical, made without a visual reference frame-work, from a tilted-body position, result in systematic constant errors (Aubert effects).
