BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in the United Kingdom. Artificial intelligence-based software has been developed to reduce the number of missed or misdiagnosed lung nodules on computed tomography images.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy, clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of using software with artificial intelligence-derived algorithms to assist in the detection and analysis of lung nodules in computed tomography scans of the chest compared with unassisted reading.
DESIGN: Systematic review and de novo cost

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a common herpesvirus that affects more than 90% of people worldwide. It is usually spread through saliva. Although most infections show no symptoms or only lead to mono, uncommon complications such as respiratory issues can arise, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems. While rare, cases of EBV-related pneumonia, lung nodules, and venous thromboembolism have been occasionally reported. A 17-year-old male came in with fever, dyspnea, massive hemoptysis, and sore throat. Numerous pulmonary nodules were shown in imaging. According to broncho-alveolar

Background Pulmonary noncalcified nodules (NCNs) attached to the fissural or costal pleura with smooth margins and triangular or lentiform, oval, or semicircular (LOS) shapes at low-dose CT are recommended for annual follow-up instead of immediate workup. Purpose To determine whether management of mediastinal or diaphragmatic pleura-attached NCNs (M/DP-NCNs) with the same features as fissural or costal pleura-attached NCNs at low-dose CT can follow the same recommendations. Materials and Methods This retrospective study reviewed chest CT examinations in participants from two databases. Group A

Diffuse Idiopathic Pulmonary Neuroendocrine Cell Hyperplasia (DIPNECH) is a rare pulmonary disorder characterised by classic radiological findings and symptoms of obstructive lung disease. DIPNECH is considered a precursor to carcinoid tumours in the lungs. In this case, we describe a patient with years of unexplained dry cough presenting with 2 weeks of progressive nausea and vomiting, and found to have massive hepatomegaly on examination. By CT-PE, she was diagnosed with DIPNECH, and abdominal MRI revealed metastatic carcinoid tumours. Despite its non-specific presentation, DIPNECH has chara

A 70-year-old man, ex-smoker with a 3-pack-year smoking history, presented with a 5-week history of persistent cough. There were no positive findings on clinical examination. The patient's chest X-ray showed a nodular density in the right lung, initially thought to be malignant. After an extensive workup which included CT-guided lung biopsies, bronchoscopies, positron emission tomography scanning, among many other investigations, discussion at the respiratory multidisciplinary team meeting, and a right upper lobe lung resection, a diagnosis of histoplasmosis was performed.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: We tested whether satisfaction of search (SOS) effects that occur in computed tomography (CT) examination of the chest on detection of native abnormalities are produced by the addition of simulated pulmonary nodules.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, 70 CT examinations, half that demonstrated diverse, subtle abnormalities and half that demonstrated no native lesions, were read by 18 radiology residents and fellows under two experimental conditions: presented with and without pulmonary nodules. In a second experiment, many

A 68-year-old woman presented with a history of hemoptysis. She had been receiving hormone therapy and chemotherapy for recurrent breast cancer. She was diagnosed with diffuse alveolar hemorrhage caused by metastatic breast cancer, as evidenced by increasingly bloody bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and malignant cells in multiple lung lobes. This condition was associated with tumor emboli in the pulmonary vasculature and transformation into a hormone receptor-negative state. Serial changes in chest computed tomography findings, from diffuse patchy ground-glass opacities to multiple nodules, are n

Our case patient was a 38-year-old pregnant Japanese woman who underwent emergency Caesarean section because of massive vaginal bleeding due to a low-lying placenta. Immediately after delivery, she presented with rapidly progressive dyspnea. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed bilateral pleural effusion, lung nodules, multiple liver tumors, and multiple osteolytic lesions. Accordingly, epidermal growth factor receptor-mutant advanced lung adenocarcinoma was diagnosed. This report highlights the occurrence of rapid progression of lung cancer following delivery that led to postpartum

Pulmonary hamartomas are rare benign tumors consisting of multiple mesenchymal cell lines like cartilage, bone and fat. We discuss an interesting case of a 53-year-old male patient, who was referred to our clinic for persistent cough. Chest X-ray revealed a left suprahilar density associated with plate like atelectasis, which on chest CT was found to be a densely calcified nodule, causing narrowing of the left upper lobe (LUL) bronchus with calcified bilateral hilar lymph nodes. A bronchoscopy revealed a smooth endobronchial mass with calcification, which was removed. Histopathology revealed p

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the main aspects on CT scans of six patients hospitalized in a bone marrow transplant ward, diagnosed with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), during an in-hospital outbreak of the disease.
METHODS: We reviewed 10 chest CT scans of six neutropenic or immunocompromised patients hospitalized in the hematology and bone marrow transplant ward of the Hospital São Paulo, in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, who were diagnosed with IPA between April of 2007 and October of 2007. The diagnosis of IPA was confirmed by anatomopathological findings (in 2 cases), culture (in 3 case

Bilateral pleural effusions are a rare manifestation of sarcoidosis. We describe here the case of a 30 year old Vietnamese man living in Ireland who presented with a 4 month history of cough, dyspnoea on exertion and fatigue. On chest CT, he was found to have bilateral pleural effusions, bihilar lymphadenopathy and multiple pulmonary nodules. Pleural biopsy confirmed the presence of non caseating granulomas. He was commenced on steroids with excellent clinical response.

Pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (PEH) is a rare soft tissue tumor of endothelial origin that occurs among young women and typically presents as bilateral multiple nodules, readily mistaken for carcinoma or, as in this case, Wegener's granulomatosis. This is a rare disease, with approximately 50 cases described in the literature. In the present report, we describe a case of PEH in a 39-yr-old woman. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for CD34.

A 40-year-old woman presented with profound weight loss, anemia and multiple pulmonary nodules. Further investigation revealed a hepatic abscess and a pelvic mass associated with an intrauterine device. Cultures of the hepatic abscess and from peripheral blood demonstrated Actinomyces species. The patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy and hysterectomy. Pathological examination showed characteristic sulphur granules of actinomycosis. Long-term therapy with high-dose intravenous penicillin resulted in clinical and radiographic improvement.

An eight-year-old, neutered male, domestic shorthair cat was referred with a four-day history of acute vomiting. Hypercalcemia was identified on serum biochemical testing. Thoracic radiographs showed multiple pulmonary nodular densities. Postmortem and histopathological examination identified the nodules as bronchogenic adenocarcinoma with metastases to the tracheobronchial lymph nodes, diaphragm, and parietal pleura. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of hypercalcemia of malignancy associated with bronchogenic adenocarcinoma in a cat.

Septic pulmonary embolism occurs when septic material separates from its source and infiltrates the pulmonary parenchyma, resulting in substantial clinical symptoms. Here we report a 13-year-old female patient admitted to the hospital with a fever and chest discomfort. In the past days, she had bilateral limb pain, which induced traditional cauterization in the bilateral inguinal regions. On inspection, she had edema and erythema at the cauterization site, indicating wound infection. Multiple lung nodules were discovered on computed tomography, indicating SPE. High-dose antibiotics were starte

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a multi-system, idiopathic, inflammatory disorder that affects the lungs in over 90% of patients. The incidence of bone lesions in sarcoidosis is only 1-13%.
CASE REPORT: This study describes a 60-year-old woman with a previous history of thyroid cancer, and a more recent diagnosis of lung cancer with suspicious metastatic lesions, which were confirmed to be sarcoidosis.
CONCLUSION: This case suggests that pulmonary neoplasms and pulmonary sarcoidosis can coexist and be easily confused. When lung cancer is accompanied by symmetric hilar lymph node enlargement and m

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is rare in children with immunocompromise as an important risk factor. A 7-year-old girl with unspecified T-cell immunodeficiency presented with left-sided weakness and was found to have a right-sided frontal lobe mass on imaging. The mass was resected; histopathology and molecular studies evidenced diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Prior chest imaging had revealed left upper lobe mass, and repeat chest imaging revealed multiple pulmonary nodules, initially concerning for metastasis. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical wedge resection of the lung …

5-Aminosalicylate agents are the main therapeutic agents for ulcerative colitis. Balsalazide is a prodrug of 5-aminosalicylate and has fewer side effects than the other 5-aminosalicylate agents. Pulmonary complications resembling granulomatosis with polyangiitis in ulcerative colitis are extremely rare. Here, we report a patient with ulcerative colitis on balsalazide presenting respiratory symptoms and multiple pulmonary nodules from a chest radiography that was pathologically diagnosed with a limited form of granulomatosis with polyangiitis with bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia-l…
