Extracardiac Rhabdomyoma Mimicking Plunging Ranula.

Histopathologically adult extracardiac rhabdomyoma is a benign tumour of mature striated muscle. It is a slow- growing tumour with predilection to occur in head and neck region. They appear mainly as a solitary lesion, and about 15% of them can be multicentric. A 56-year-old man presented to us with the floor of mouth swelling persisted for one year and the right neck swelling for three years mimicking a plunging ranula. Radiological imaging revealed enhancing mass at the floor of mouth and submandibular region. The mass represented a nonvascular benign tumour. Subsequently, the patient underw

The Other Side of the Fascia: The Smooth Muscle Part 1.

According to current scientific standards, the fascia is a connective tissue derived from two separate germ layers, the mesoderm (trunk and limbs, part of the neck) and the ectoderm (cervical tract and skull). The fascia has the property of maintaining the shape and function of its anatomical district, but it also can adapt to mechanical-metabolic stimuli. Smooth muscle and non-voluntary striated musculature originated from the mesoderm have never been properly considered as a type of fascia. They are some of the viscera present in the mediastinum, in the abdomen and in the pelvic floor. This

Adulthood benign triton tumor developed in the orbit.

Benign triton tumor (BTT) or neuromuscular hamartoma is an uncommon tumor composed of mature neural and well-differentiated striated muscular elements. Its development is exceptionally rare in the adult and head region. This report describes a case of adulthood BTT that occurred in the orbit. The patient was a 53-year-old woman who presented with right periorbital swelling and pain in eyeball over 2 months. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-enhancing mass surrounding optic nerve and ocular muscles in the right retrobulbar area. The tumor was subtotally removed via transcranial approac

Atypical autonomic regulation, auditory processing, and affect recognition in women with HIV.

This study examined the effect of HIV on visceromotor (i.e., heart rate and heart rate variability) and somatomotor (i.e., auditory processing and affect recognition) components of a Social Engagement System defined by the Polyvagal Theory (Porges, 1995) that links vagal regulation of the heart with brainstem regulation of the striated muscles of the face and head. Relative to at risk HIV-seronegative women, HIV-seropositive women had less heart rate variability (i.e., respiratory sinus arrhythmia) and had poorer performance on auditory processing and affect recognition tasks. CD4 was negative

Pyomyositis of tensor fascia lata: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pyomyositis is a disease in which an abscess is formed deep within large striated muscles. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 10-year-old boy who presented with fever and a painful hip and was subsequently diagnosed with pyomyositis of the tensor fascia lata. In children with clinical and laboratory findings of inflammation in the vicinity of the hip joint, the differential diagnosis includes transient synovitis, an early stage of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, infectious arthritis of the hip, rheumatologic diseases and extracapsular infection such as osteomyelitis. [A fatal case of trichinelliasis with intensive invasion and acute massive hemorrhage from a stomach ulcer].

The paper deals with a fatal case of trichinosis in a 61-year-old male due to acute massive gastric hemorrhage from the old silent gastric ulcer developed at week 8 after the onset of infection (or at week 3 after the appearance of the first clinical signs). At autopsy, the method of ingestion of cross-striated muscular samples revealed high Trichinella spiralis infection rates: from 135 larvae per g of muscles of the tongue to 512 larvae in the diaphragm. Infection had occurred due to long-term (1-month) ingestion of the pork obtained from a subsidiary farm of Moscow Province. A role of alcoh

Magnetic resonance imaging as an adjunct to planning an anorectal pull-through.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a relatively new diagnostic tool that generates images of sections of the body taken in any plane. We report the use of MRI as a tool to plan surgical procedures in patients with imperforate anus, imaging the pelvis and lumbosacral spine in the sagittal, transverse, and coronal planes. MRI clearly reveals the extent of the pelvic musculature even in patients with severe sacral agenesis. MRI is extremely useful in assessing patients under consideration for reoperation, clearly demonstrating the relationship between the pulled through colon and the "striated m

Kaposi's sarcoma in a renal allograft recipient under longterm immunosuppressive therapy.

A 40-year-old Caucasian male with chronic glomerulonephritis received a cadaver renal transplant in July 1973, and received continuous immunosuppressive therapy with Azathioprine and prednisone. His renal function deteriorated during the autumn of 1977, and he developed haemangiomatous tumours in the soft palate and on the sole of the right foot in April 1978. Both were surgically removed and histologically confirmed as Kaposi's sarcomata. The patient died a month later of renal insufficiency. At autopsy, a Koposi's sarcoma was also present in the right lateral malleolar region. There were mul

Pseudomyotonia of the periurethral sphincter in women with urinary incontinence.

Needle electromyography demonstrated bizarre repetitive high frequency discharges of the periurethral muscles in 3 women with urinary incontinence. One patient recovered spontaneously and 2 had associated stress incontinence that was greatly accentuated. Surgical correction of the stress incontinence had been done in 1 woman before the sphincter neuropathy was recognized and she continued to experience severe incontinence unrelated to activity for 30 months while the neuropathy subsided and stabilized. The second patient with stress incontinence and sphincter pseudomyotonia was diagnosed preop

The radical soft-tissue mobilization (Kelly repair) for bladder exstrophy.

UNLABELLED: The radical soft-tissue mobilization (RSTM) technique has been proposed as an alternative for staged reconstruction of bladder exstrophy. In this video, we demonstrate the successive steps of this technique. METHODS: A newborn male with classic bladder exstrophy underwent bladder closure without pelvic osteotomies at birth; he then underwent RSTM at 1 year of age. TECHNIQUE: Mobilization: The RSTM involved simultaneous intra-pelvic and perineal dissection, aiming at full mobilization of potential urethral sphincter striated structures, levatores ani muscles, pudendal pedicles and

Applying EMG technology in medial and lateral elbow enthesopathy treatment using Myo motion controller.

Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic technique allowing for the detection of signals generated by changes in electrical potentials of striated muscles. The application of this technology is becoming an increasingly popular subject of scientific research. With the appearance of new devices retrieving EMG data, novel methods of its processing for various purposes are being developed. One such device is the Myo movement controller, produced by Thalmic Labs (now North). The device has been used for the analysis of muscle activation levels in patients with "tennis elbow" and "golfer's elbow"-cond

Components of the neural circuitry of the vaginocavernosus reflex in rabbits.

In mammals the mechanisms underlying female sexual and reproductive biology are poorly understood. Little attention has been paid to striated muscles and their neural regulation. The aim of the present study was to describe the components of the vaginocavernosus reflex in adult rabbits. It was found that mechanical stimulation of the glans of the clitoris and the perineal vagina induced electromyographic (EMG) responses in bulbocavernosus (Bcm) and ischiocavernosus (Icm) muscles. Unilateral and bilateral nerve transection indicated that the clitoral nerve is the main afferent path of the refle

Use of anal sphincter electromyography during operations on the conus medullaris and sacral nerve roots.

The mechanical activity of the anal sphincter can be translated into electrical activity and recorded on graph paper or an oscilloscope. The activity of the anal sphincter may be extrapolated to activity of the external urethral sphincter because both are striated muscles innervated by the pudendal nerve that arises from S-2, S-3, and S-4. Stimulation of these nerves causes contraction of the sphincter muscles, and a deflection of the recording device occurs. This technique was employed intraoperatively in monitoring operations on the conus medullaris and sacral nerve roots in 10 patients with

Effective top-down LC/MS+ method for assessing actin isoforms as a potential cardiac disease marker.

Actin is the major component of the cytoskeleton, playing an essential role in the structure and motility of both muscle and nonmuscle cells. It is highly conserved and encoded by a multigene family. α-Cardiac actin (αCAA) and α-skeletal actin (αSKA), encoded by two different genes, are the primary actin isoforms expressed in striated muscles. The relative expression levels of αSKA and αCAA have been shown to vary between species and under pathological conditions. In particular, an increased αSKA expression is believed to be a programmed response of a diseased heart. Therefore, it is essential

The utrophin promoter A drives high expression of the transgenic LacZ gene in liver, testis, colon, submandibular gland, and small intestine.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by the absence of the muscle cytoskeletal protein dystrophin. Utrophin is an autosomal homologue of dystrophin, and overexpression of the protein is expected to compensate for the defect of dystrophin. The utrophin gene has two promoters, A and B, and promoter A of the utrophin gene is a possible target of pharmacological interventions for DMD because A-utrophin is up-regulated in dystrophin-deficient mdx skeletal and cardiac muscles. To investigate the utrophin promoter A activity in vivo, we generated nuclear localization signal-tagged

Increase of mitochondria in vasa nervorum of cases with mitochondrial myopathy, Kearns-Sayre syndrome, progressive external ophthalmoplegia and MELAS.

Previous studies on patients with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) revealed accumulations of mitochondria in endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells of pial arterioles, and small intracerebral arteries up to 250 microns in diameter; in pericytes of capillaries, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells of small blood vessels in skeletal muscle; and according to preliminary results also in endothelial and smooth muscle cells of capillaries and arterioles in sural nerves. These mitochondria do not show the prominent paracrystalline inclusi

[Use and mechanism of botulinum toxin in overactive bladder treatment].

Overactive bladder is very frequent in central neurogenic patients; it is a major cause of refractory incontinence despite anticholinergic treatment. In non-neurogenic patients it results in very distressing symptoms that associate urgency with or without incontinence and frequency. Botulinum toxin A is a well known agent used previously in the treatment of striated muscle spasmodism, which blocks the release of acetylcholine from nerve endings and neuro-muscular transmission. Its recent use in urology revealed a dramatic improvement in clinical and urodynamic parameters of the overactive blad

[Ultrasound imaging of the urethral sphincter].

The integrity and functional capacity of the urethral sphincter is one of the important prerequisites of urinary incontinence in women. Urodynamic investigations revealed repeatedly that the maximum closure pressure in the median portion of the urethra corresponds to the maximal thickness of the external urethral sphinctor (rhabdosphincter urethrae). This striated muscle is adapted to maintain a relatively steady tonus which assists the closure mechanism of the urethra [4]. In the submitted study the authors focused attention on the ultrasonic visualization of the internal urethral sphincter i

[Value of evoked sacral potentials in studying bladder sphincter disorders in peripheral neuropathies and central nervous system diseases. A study of 110 cases].

The sacral spinal cord is one of the main sites of integration of bladder and anal sphincter and sexual function. Clinical tests (bulbocavernous reflex, perineal reflexes) are often inadequate and urodynamic investigations (cystomanometry, urecholine test, Susset's test) are sometimes unhelpful. The integrity of this structure is essential for normal sphincter function and disease at this level (or of its afferent or efferent limbs) produces a peripheral type of disorder. Sacral evoked potentials are an electrophysiological means of testing the bulbocavernous reflex by external stimulation of
