Impact of nutritional status in sarcoidosis patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology, with fatigue being one of the most common symptoms. The cause is still under investigation. Factors such as reduced lung function, respiratory muscle weakness, physical deconditioning, corticosteroid-induced myopathy may cause fatigue. Nutritional status of patients is becoming increasingly important in respiratory diseases. This study aimed to investigate the effect of nutritional assessment on peripheral and respiratory muscle strength, as well as exercise capacity in sarcoidosis patients. METHODS: This

Adaptation of rat extensor digitorum longus to overload and increased activity.

Rat extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles were overloaded by removal of the synergist tibialis anterior (TA). The weight of the overloaded muscle was increased 15 days after the initial operation and remained higher throughout the period studied (153 days). The times to peak twitch tension and half relaxation remained unaltered, but the twitch and tetanic tensions developed by the overloaded EDL muscles increased. The overloaded EDL muscles became significantly more fatigue resistant. In a separate group of animals the overloaded EDL muscle was also chronically stimulated at 10 Hz. The addit

Lack of gender differences in the ability to relax between repetitive maximum isokinetic shoulder forward flexions: a population-based study among northern Swedes.

The aim of the present study was to analyse the effects of gender and age in a population-based sample of clinically healthy subjects on: (1) strength, endurance and perception of fatigue, (2) mean frequency (MNF) of the electromyogram (EMG), and (3) the ability to relax between active contractions (signal amplitude ratio; SAR) of the surface EMG of an isokinetic shoulder forward flexion test. With this aim we have analysed aspects of the validity of MNF as an indicator of fatigue, using peak torque as a criterion variable. The subjects were 27 men and 28 women (age range: 20-60 years), who we

Involvement of neuronal and muscular Trk-fused gene (TFG) defects in the development of neurodegenerative diseases.

Trk-fused gene (TFG) mutations have been identified in patients with several neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we attempted to clarify the effects of TFG deletions in motor neurons and in muscle fibers, using tissue-specific TFG knockout (vMNTFG KO and MUSTFG KO) mice. vMNTFG KO, generated by crossing TFG floxed with VAChT-Cre, showed deterioration of motor function and muscle atrophy especially in slow-twitch soleus muscle, in line with the predominant Cre expression in slow-twitch fatigue-resistant (S) and fast-twitch fatigue-resistant (FR) motor neurons. Consistently, denervation o

Morphological, electrophysiological, and metabolic characteristics of skeletal muscle in people with end-stage renal disease: a critical review.

PURPOSE: Fatigue is one of the most frequent debilitating symptoms reported by people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on haemodialysis (HD) therapy. A wide range of underlying abnormalities, including skeletal muscle weakness, have been implicated as causes of this fatigue. Skeletal muscle weakness is well established in this population, and such muscle weakness is amenable to physical therapy treatment. The purpose of this review was to identify morphological, electrophysiological, and metabolic characteristics of skeletal muscles in people with ESRD/HD that may cause skeletal muscle weak

L-carnitine pretreatment protects slow-twitch skeletal muscles in a rat model of ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury negatively affects the outcome of surgical interventions for amputated or severely traumatized extremities. This study aimed to evaluate the protective role of l-carnitine on the contractile properties of fast-twitch (extensor digitorum longus [EDL]) and slow-twitch (soleus [SOL]) skeletal muscles following I/R-induced injury in a rat model. Rats were divided into 4 groups (1) saline pretreatment, (2) l-carnitine pretreatment, (3) saline pretreatment and I/R, and (4) l-carnitine pretreatment and I/R. Twitch and tetanic contractions in the EDL and SOL muscles i

Effectiveness of inspiratory muscle training and multicomponent physical training in patients with post-COVID conditions: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that fatigue and dyspnea are among the most frequently reported symptoms of post-COVID condition. Therefore, several studies have investigated respiratory muscle or global peripheral muscle training as strategies to manage those symptoms. Despite evidence of potential benefits, conflicting results persist due to the heterogeneity of rehabilitation protocols and assessment tools. Thereby, the objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of inspiratory muscle training and multicomponent physical training in adults with dyspnea and fatigue fo

Physical training and exercise in myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis is characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. As sustained muscle use increases the weakness, the value of physical training programs has previously been questioned. This is a review to clarify the safety and usefulness of systematic training in myasthenia gravis, based on a systematic search in available databases using the relevant key words. Ten intervention studies including 159 patients with generalized disease have been published regarding the effect of systematic physical training, three of them on respiratory muscles. Muscle strength improved, and in the majority o

Two methods for the measurement of voluntary contraction torque in the biceps brachii muscle.

Appropriate measurement of maximal voluntary contraction force of a single limb muscle or of a muscle group is important in clinical and res … ngements may lead to the same maximal force but to different rates of myoelectric manifestations of muscle fatigue since the effort may be shared differently among the muscles of synergic or stabilizing groups.

Sex-specific effects of fatigue on hamstrings and quadriceps electromyography of female and male cyclists.

Previous studies have shown sex differences in muscle activation of the quadriceps and hamstrings with fatigue. However, whether these differences are present in a repeated sprint exercise (RSE) cycling task is unknown. Twenty (10 females) cyclists performed an RSE of 9 × 30 s bouts (1.5 min active rest in between) on their personal bike on a trainer, with instructions to produce as many watts as possible. Surface electromyography (EMG) of five right-side quadricep and hamstring muscles was recorded, with activation amplitude (RMS) calculated over each bout. Results show a general decrease wit

Effect of simulated handball match-induced fatigue on isokinetic hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio and evertor-to-invertor ratio in professional players.

Knee and ankle injuries are the most common injuries in handball players. Many of these injuries occur toward the end of the game when fatigue sets in. The underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon are not well understood. This study investigated the effect of a handball match-simulation protocol on the hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) and evertor-to-invertor (E:I) peak torque ratios. Thirty professional male handball players from Iranian super league teams participated in this study. Isokinetic concentric peak torque of the hamstrings, quadriceps, ankle invertor, and ankle evertors were measured

The neuromuscular fatigue induced by repeated scrums generates instability that can be limited by appropriate recovery.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the fatigue on the machine scrum pushing sagittal forces during repeated scrums and to determine the origin of the knee extensor fatigue. Twelve elite U23 rugby union front row players performed six 6-s scrums every 30 s against a dynamic scrum machine with passive or active recovery. The peak, average, and the standard deviation of the force were measured. A neuromuscular testing procedure of the knee extensors was carried out before and immediately after the repeated scrum protocol including maximal voluntary force, evoked force, and vol

Effects of short-term hand immobilization on motor functions across domains in adults.

Short-term limb immobilization is known to impair muscle strength; however, its effects across distinct domains of motor function remain incompletely characterized. In this study, we assessed the effects of 72-h of hand immobilization on motor functions in healthy adults. Twenty-eight participants were randomized to an immobilization or control group and completed a motor test battery before and after the intervention. The battery assessed maximal and explosive strength, quantified as maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force and rate of force development (RFD), fatigability during sustained m

Decoding Ultramarathon: Muscle Damage as the Main Impediment to Performance.

The biological determinants of performance have been well described for running races up to and including the marathon (42.2 km). Ultramarathon is more complex. Events range from 50 to 5000 km in single or multiple stages, are contested in various environments and terrains, and force athletes to contend with diverse performance-limiting issues such as fueling, hydrating, gastrointestinal distress, muscle damage, and sleep deprivation. Ultramarathons are not simply "long marathons." Nevertheless, scientific developments over the past decade have inched us toward a more complete picture of the p

The effect of using laparoscopic instruments on muscle activation patterns during minimally invasive surgical training procedures.

BACKGROUND: Many surgeons report pain as a result of muscle fatigue during laparoscopy. Therefore, determining how surgical task or instrument selection influences the duration of muscle activation may provide insight into the relationship between laparoscopic instrumentation and muscle fatigue. METHODS: Surface electromyography (EMG) electrodes were placed over the right deltoid, trapezius, bicep, pronator teres, flexor carpi ulnaris, and extensor digitorum superficialis muscles of four surgeons. These surgeons were then asked to perform a targeted grasp and release (T1), a simulated bowel i…

Self-Reported Non-Auditory Effects of High Sound Pressure Levels Exposure in Academic Musicians in Uruguay.

BACKGROUND: While hearing loss is the most emblematic effect of exposure to high sound pressure levels, it is not neither the first nor the only one. This article explores self-reported effects of exposure to high sound pressure levels among a population of 306 academic musicians (singers, choir members and instrumentalists) in Uruguay. METHODS: A special anamnesis form was prepared for use in interviews of each of the participants. The collected information was anonymized and processed. Some interesting results were found, both through direct processing and PCA analysis. RESULTS: Most parti

Contractile function in vitro of slow-twitch skeletal muscle from weanling mice subjected to wasting malnutrition.

Our hypothesis was that malnutrition sufficient to produce weight loss in weanling mice would decrease the ability of slow-twitch skeletal muscle to develop and maintain force. We isolated muscles from 3 groups (n = 5) of weanling C57BL/6J mice of both sexes (i) mice at 19 days of age serving as zero-time or baseline controls (CONT) (ii) mice fed for the next 14 days with a low-protein diet that produces features of incipient kwashiorkor (LPD) and (iii) mice fed for the next 14 days with a complete diet (NORM). Muscles were also obtained from 5 adult mice 7-9 months of age (MAT). We stimulated
