BACKGROUND: Somatic mosaicism for PIK3CA mutations causes various types of growth disorders, which have been summarized under the term PROS (PIK3CA related overgrowth spectrum). Targeted therapy with PI3K inhibitors seems to be a promising alternative for severe PROS cases. Therefore, PIK3CA testing may become more relevant in the future.

This is a presentation about innovations in pediatric minimally invasive surgery and a review of the Argentine experience. The most representative are (1) the thoracoscopic treatment of long gap esophageal atresia with novel techniques; (2) the nonsurgical and minimally invasive treatment of chest wall deformities, particularly of pectus carinatum; and (3) the use of magnetic surgical devices in classic laparoscopy and transumbilical surgery.

Cleft sternum is a rare congenital chest deformity that develops during the first trimester. Failure of the process of midline mesenchymal strip fusion leads to absence of the sternum, resulting in cleft formation. Multiple surgical approaches have been described in the closure of sternal clefts. An optimal surgical approach is still debatable. We describe 2 cases of complete sternal clefting treated with staging of the repair. Between April 2001 and 2007, we treated 208 patients with pectus carinatum by using a specially designed dynamic compression system (DCS) that uses a custom-made aluminum brace. Recently, an electronic pressure measuring device was added to the brace. Results were evaluated by using a double-blinded subjective scale (1 to 10). Between October 1982 and June 1985 the Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting System received reports of 104 suspected adverse reactions occurring in 93 patients who took isotretinoin. Adverse reactions involving the skin and mucous membranes (29 reports), central nervous system (23), musculoskeletal system (12), pregnancy (11), and eyes (8) were most commonly reported. Extensive resection (50-75%) of the large colon was performed in 12 horses. Indications for resection were: loss of viability due to large colon volvulus (seven), thromboembolic episode (three), impairment of flow of ingesta due to adhesions (one), or congenital abnormalities (one).
