[The first case of Hypoderma tarandi-associated human myiasis in Greenland].

We present the first case of human myiasis in Greenland caused by the warble fly Hypoderma tarandi. Noticing a persisting, migrating, stinging facial sensation, a female patient eventually extirpated a larva from her upper eyelid, and the larva was confirmed to species level using DNA-based methods. A high prevalence of H. tarandi in reindeer, the main reservoir host, and increasing populations of musk ox may imply an increased risk of zoonotic transmission. Although diagnosis is challenging, rapid intervention is crucial to reduce the risk of ophthalmomyiasis.

Vulval myiasis: An unusual presentation of a rare entity in an adolescent female.

Human myiasis refers to parasitic infestation of body tissues by larvae of several fly species. The entity has a simple management. Human myiasis is well-documented in the literature however genital myiasis in females is scarcely reported in the literature. We hereby report this entity in an adolescent female who presented with urinary retention and concomitant urinary tract infection.

Oral Myiasis: A Concealed Threat to Disabled Children of Developing Countries.

Disabled children with special health care needs are at high risk for oral disease. Myiasis is a rare condition that is associated with inadequate public and personal hygiene and is common in medically, mentally, and physically compromised individuals living in developing tropical countries. The purpose of this paper is to describe a case of oral myiasis in a 13-year-old Indian girl with spastic cerebral palsy.

A retrospective and geographical epidemiological survey of traumatic myiasis in southern Italy.

A survey on the prevalence and geographical distribution of traumatic myiasis in sheep, and the risk factors for the disease, was carried out in a region of southern Italy. A total of 138 sheep flocks were selected and visited to acquire data on the presence or absence of traumatic myiasis using both a questionnaire for retrospective analysis and animal inspection. Prevalences registered at the farm and animal levels, respectively, were 8.7% and 6.3% in 2010, and 5.8% and 5.0% in 2011. Records of the occurrence of the parasitic disease in this region are recent: a statistically significant (P …

Myiasis in an 89-year-old man with non-hodgkin lymphoma.

Myiasis is due to the opportunistic dipterous larvae feeding on viable or necrotic tissues of the host occurring throughout the world. We report a case of oral myiasis in an immune-compromised patient suffering from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. We would like to emphasize that such ectoparasitic infections may happen in immunocompromised patients and oral hygiene should be evaluated in all of these patients.

Myiasis by Megaselia scalaris (Diptera: Phoridae) in a python affected by pulmonitis.

Myiases are caused by the presence of maggots in vertebrate tissues and organs. Myiases have been studied widely in humans, farm animals, and pets, whereas reports of myiasis in reptiles are scarce. We describe a case of myiasis caused by the Megaselia scalaris (Loew) in an Indian python (Python molurus bivittatus, Kuhl) (Ophida: Boidae). The python, 15 yr old, born and reared in a terrarium in the mainland of Venice (Italy), was affected by diffuse, purulent pneumonia caused by Burkholderia cepacia. The severe infestation of maggots found in the lungs during an autopsy indicated at a myiasis.

Epidemiology of human furuncular myiasis of Cordylobia anthropophaga (Grunberg) in Nigeria.

Two hundred people were randomly selected for myiasis infection in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, except in some states where we did not get the stipulated number (200) to sample. In each of the six states sampled within the Niger Delta in 2009, 88% of 200 patients examined in Rivers State had the Cordylobia infection followed by Cross Rivers State (>86%), Bayelsa (>84%) while Edo, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states showed higher than 82% infection in that order. Our findings showed that women, children, and infants are commonly affected by furuncular myiasis irrespective of skin color, age, bloo…

First Report of Intestinal Myiasis Due To Eristalis tenax in Iran.

Eristalis tenax, belonging to order Diptera, family Syrphidae seldomly causes intestinal myiasis. Intestinal myiasis caused by E. tenax larvae is a rare manifestation found in both humans and other vertebrate animals. We report a 22-year-old woman presented with this myiasis. The larva in her stool sample was identified as E. tenax related to its typical morphology and authentic clues. Lack of specific control measures in the domestic water supply system was the most probable cause of this infestation.

Myiasis in the uterine cavity of an elderly woman with a complete uterine prolapse.

Myiasis is the infestation of the tissues of vertebrate animals by the larvae of flies (maggots). As the condition generally occurs in exposed areas of the body, genital myiasis is a rare condition, and myiasis of the uterine cavity is even rarer, only one case having been previously described in the literature. The case reported here describes myiasis of the uterine cavity and ulcerated vaginal mucosa of an 89-year-old woman with a severe (third-degree) genital prolapse. This case describes an extremely rare situation, and emphasizes the need for good hygiene and surgical correction in patien…

Prevalence and pathology of camel nasal myiasis in eastern areas of Iran.

Camel botfly, Cephalopina titillator, causes severe economic losses to the camel industry in many camel-producing areas of the world. A total of 1328 camels, of different age groups and of both sexes, slaughtered at Mashhad Slaughterhouse, Khorasan Razavi Province, eastern Iran were inspected for infestation with larvae of C. titillator. After slaughtering, the head was dissected and grossly inspected for presence of C. titillator larvae and other gross abnormalities. Seven hundred and seventy one camels (58.1%) were infested with this larvae and the rate of infestation was significantly great

Diagnosis of myiasis by fine needle aspiration cytology: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is the infestation of tissues and organs by dipteran larvae and is endemic in tropical areas. Diagnosis usually is made by demonstration of a larva or larvae in infected tissue, generally recognizable to the naked eye. In our case, diagnosis was based on fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). CASE: A 59-year-old female patient with a painful neck mass was examined at an otorhinolaryngologic department after symptoms for several weeks. The lesion was found to be an absceding lymphadenitis, based on clinical symptoms, palpation and imaging (ultrasound and computed tomograph…

Advanced stage of oral myiasis in children: a clinical case report.

Human myiasis is characterized by larval infestation of body tissues or cavities of live individuals. Although most frequently observed in underdeveloped and tropical countries, reports of human myiasis have been encountered throughout the world. Conventional treatment is the mechanical removal of the larvae, one by one, which is painful and embarrassing and repugnant to both health professional and patient. Even though human myiasis is not considered rare, most dental professionals have very little knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of this pathology. The purpose of this article, theref…

Use of ivermectin in the treatment of orbital myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax.

Orbital myiasis cases by dipterous fly larvae are rarely reported. A case of massive orbital myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax resulting in complete loss of the globe is described. Oral ivermectin was used successfully to eliminate the larvae prior to enucleation, making the mechanical removal of larvae an unnecessary procedure.

[An unusual case in Belgium of intestinal myiasis due to Eristalis tenax].

We report an unusual case in Belgium of indigenous intestinal myiasis caused by Eristalis tenax during canicular summer 2003 in a 36 year old man living in Belgium. This patient complain near its general practitioner about diarrhea and intestinal rumbles. Larvae emitted on several occasions were identified as Eristalis tenax larvae. Socio-economical status of the patient and atmospheric conditions seems to be related to this observation. Clinical evolution has been spontaneously and quickly positive. An empirical treatment with an association of metronidazole and nifuroxazide was however presc…

[Cutaneous myiasis. A case of double infestation with Dermatobia hominis larvae].

We describe a case of imported double cutaneous infestation with Dermatobia hominis acquired in Central America. The characteristic clinical picture is a growing furuncular lesion with continuous secretion from a small central orifice. Because of the resemblance to a bacterial infection, there is a risk of diagnostic failure. Increasing incidence of imported myiasis may be expected as a result of increased travel activity to endemic areas. A certain knowledge of this disease is therefore required.
