Can the sustainable development goals for cancer be met in Brazil? A population-based study.

BackgroundA one-third reduction in premature mortality (30-69 years) from chronic noncommunicable diseases is goal 3.4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG). The burden of NCDs is expected to continue to increase in low- and middle-income countries, including Brazil.ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to assess geographical and temporal patterns in premature cancer mortality in Brazil between 2001 and 2015 and to predict this to 2030 in order to benchmark against the 3.4 SDG target.MethodsWe used data on deaths from cancer in those aged 30-69, by age group, sex and cance

Beyond Clinical Trials in Patients With Multiple Myeloma: A Critical Review of Real-World Results.

The current strategies for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM) have improved, thanks to effective drug classes and combination therapies, for both the upfront and relapsed settings. Clinical trials for newly diagnosed transplant-ineligible patients led to the approval of immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs) and proteasome inhibitors (PIs) in combination with anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), to be administered during the induction phase before transplantation and during maintenance treatment, with lenalidomide recommended until relapse. In relapsed/refractory patients, the complex treatment

Stem Cells Collection and Mobilization in Adult Autologous/Allogeneic Transplantation: Critical Points and Future Challenges.

Achieving successful hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) relies on two fundamental pillars: effective mobilization and efficient collection through apheresis to attain the optimal graft dose. These cornerstones pave the way for enhanced patient outcomes. The primary challenges encountered by the clinical unit and collection facility within a transplant program encompass augmenting mobilization efficiency to optimize the harvest of target cell populations, implementing robust monitoring and predictive strategies for mobilization, streamlining the apheresis procedure to minimize colle

Quality indicators and patient outcome measures for palliative care in cancer patients: a systematic review.

IntroductionWith the exponential rise in global cancer incidence, the surge in demand for palliative care has outstripped capacity, limiting patients' access to quality and holistic palliative care, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Despite an upturn in research activity, evidence in palliative care remains limited, given its complexity as well as the shortage of standardised quality indicators (QIs) and patient outcome measures (POMs). The objective of this systematic review is to assess the QIs and POMs used to evaluate palliative care service on aggregated and individual level

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with short-acting inhaled pharmacotherapy increases the risk of prostate cancer: A two-stage database approach.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at a higher risk of many types of cancer. However, specific investigation of the risk of prostate cancer and the influence of COPD pharmacotherapy in patients with COPD is lacking. This study investigated the risk and influence of COPD pharmacotherapy on risk of prostate cancer in patients with COPD. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used data from Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005 (LHID2005). The study cohort comprised COPD patients who received treatment between 2004 and 2008, and who were i

Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma: From Past to Future-A Comprehensive Review of Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Advances.

Hodgkin lymphoma, a hematological malignancy of lymphoid origin that typically arises from germinal-center B cells, has an excellent overall prognosis. However, the treatment of patients who relapse or develop resistant disease still poses a substantial clinical and research challenge, even though current risk-adapted and response-based treatment techniques produce overall survival rates of over 95%. The appearance of late malignancies after the successful cure of primary or relapsed disease continues to be a major concern, mostly because of high survival rates. Particularly in pediatric HL pa

Temporal Trends and Outcomes of Amyloidosis in Korea: A 14-Year Nationwide Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: The diagnostic and therapeutic landscape of amyloidosis has evolved significantly with the introduction of non-invasive imaging and novel agents. However, contemporary real-world data reflecting these recent changes-particularly regarding the burden and prognostic impact of cardiac involvement-remain limited. We aimed to evaluate up-to-date temporal trends in the incidence, prevalence, and outcomes of amyloidosis using a nationwide cohort spanning the recent era. Methods: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, we identified 5165 patients with newly

Immunotherapy with check-point inhibitors (CPI) in adult malignancies: a protocol for the systematic review of the quality of economic analyses.

BackgroundImmuno-oncology, and in particular, check-point inhibitors (CPIs), have led to a paradigm shift in the field of cancer care. The cost of new drug development is high, and many novel agents in oncology are significantly more expensive than older agents. Therefore, healthcare funders have factored measures of cost-effectiveness into decisions concerning drug reimbursement and incorporation of new agents into treatment algorithms. The methodology of cost-effectiveness evaluations, however, is less rigorously applied than those evaluating clinical efficacy and safety data. Thus, in spite

Impact of Antibiotic Time-Outs in Multidisciplinary ICU Rounds for Antimicrobial Stewardship Program on Patient Survival: A Controlled Before-and-After Study.

The antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) is an important quality improvement initiative that is recommended in the ICU. However, the shortage of infectious disease physicians in Japan has led to the need for simpler methods for implementing ASPs. We investigated whether antibiotic time-outs (ATOs) during multidisciplinary rounds as part of an ASP can improve patient survival and reduce the number of days of therapy (DOT) with antibiotics.DesignSingle-center controlled before-and-after study.SettingMedical/surgical ICU in a tertiary university medical center in Tokyo, Japan.PatientsAll patie

Multicenter phase 2 study of romidepsin plus lenalidomide for previously untreated peripheral T-cell lymphoma.

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are associated with poor prognosis when treated with cytotoxic chemotherapy. We report the findings of a phase 2 study evaluating a chemotherapy-free combination of romidepsin plus lenalidomide as initial treatment for patients with PTCL who were aged >60 years or noncandidates for chemotherapy. Treatment was initiated with romidepsin 10 mg/m2 IV on days 1, 8, and 15 and lenalidomide 25 mg taken orally from days 1 to 21 of 28-day cycle for up to 1 year. The primary objective was overall response rate (ORR). Secondary objectives included safety and survival.

Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 310 diseases and injuries, 1990-2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.

BACKGROUND: Non-fatal outcomes of disease and injury increasingly detract from the ability of the world's population to live in full health, a trend largely attributable to an epidemiological transition in many countries from causes affecting children, to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) more common in adults. For the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015), we estimated the incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for diseases and injuries at the global, regional, and national scale over the period of 1990 to 2015. METHODS: We estimated incid
