Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an insidious primary neoplasm of the pleura that can be challenging to diagnose and is commonly considered to be only locally invasive. We present the case of a 74-year-old male who presented with clinical features of MPM but from whom pleural fluid and biopsies initially suggested benign pathology. He later developed diffuse bony metastases and re-examination of pleural biopsies using modern immunohistochemistry and molecular testing revealed a diagnosis of sarcomatoid and desmoplastic MPM with heterologous osteosarcomatous differentiation. This case no

BACKGROUND: The presence of anaplastic and sarcomatoid components in ovarian mucinous carcinoma is extremely rare.
CASE: A 64-year-old woman underwent radical surgery for right ovarian cancer. Pathological examination showed mucinous adenocarcinoma with a focal mural nodule of anaplastic and sarcomatoid carcinoma (FIGO stage IIB). She underwent adjuvant chemotherapy but developed severe respiratory failure and died after 9 months. Autopsy showed that the bilateral pulmonary parenchyma was filled with a multinodular hemorrhagic mass, and the cardiac wall had a massive invasive lesion. Histopat

Neoplasms occur naturally in invertebrates but are not known to develop in tapeworms. We observed nests of monomorphic, undifferentiated cells in samples from lymph-node and lung biopsies in a man infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The morphologic features and invasive behavior of the cells were characteristic of cancer, but their small size suggested a nonhuman origin. A polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) assay targeting eukaryotes identified Hymenolepis nana DNA. Although the cells were unrecognizable as tapeworm tissue, immunohistochemical staining and probe hybridization la

BACKGROUND: Experience of thoracal (bronchial and thymic) carcinoid tumors is discussed to add some remarkable diagnostic and therapeutic details for their treatment, based on a retrospective clinico-pathological analysis of 152 consecutive patients operated on at the Thoracic Surgery unit in Budapest between 1974 and 1988.
METHODS: Prior to surgery 70 patients were symptom free, obstructive symptoms dominated in 65 patients, and hemoptysis occurred in 23 cases. In 68 patients a peripheral coin lesion was visible in radiographs and in 81 cases the tumor could be seen by bronchoscopy. In 3 pat

BACKGROUND: Small, asymptomatic, branch-duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas are often kept under surveillance despite their malignant potential. The management of branch-duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm is controversial with regard to indications and extent of any operative intervention. The present study aimed to evaluate enucleation as an alternative operative approach for branch-duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms to exclude and prevent malignancy.
METHODS: For branch-duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of <30 mm in diameter and an

Nervous system neoplasia is rarely reported in reptiles, with most reports representing gliomas. A captive, 9-year-old Meller's chameleon (Trioceros melleri) was euthanized for weight loss and lethargy. At necropsy, a 2 cm-diameter mass was effacing the right adrenal gland and adhered to the kidney. The skin had two, 0.8-1.0 cm-diameter, firm, pale-yellow masses over the right leg and left shoulder. The fat bodies were small. Histologically, the adrenal gland and peri-adrenal soft tissues were effaced by an expansile, moderately cellular neoplasm entrapping remnant chromaffin and interrenal ce

Background: The association of intravenous prostacyclin therapy, essential for improving prognosis and survival in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), with gastric epithelial neoplasms is uncertain. This study aimed to analyze the clinicopathologic features of gastric neoplasms in patients with PAH undergoing continuous intravenous prostacyclin therapy. Methods: We screened the registry of patients with pulmonary hypertension who visited the NHO Okayama Medical Center. Of the patients with PAH managed between January 2003 and December 2022, those who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EG

BACKGROUND: Myeloid neoplasms encompass disorders characterized by abnormal myeloid cell proliferation and differentiation, including myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms, acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Formin-like protein 1 (FMNL1) is involved in the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton and is predominantly expressed in hematopoietic cells. Given its role in leukemia cell proliferation, survival, migration, and invasion, this study investigates FMNL1 expression in normal hematopoiesis and myeloid neoplasms and explores associations w

Mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma is a rare renal neoplasm first classified by the WHO in 2004. It typically consists of low-grade cuboidal cells in tightly packed tubules, merging with spindle cells in a myxoid stroma with basophilic mucin. High-grade features, including sarcomatoid transformation, necrosis, and vascular invasion, are associated with poor prognosis and metastasis. Here, we present the second reported case of mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma metastasizing to bone despite lacking high-grade features.

The diagnosis or rare, non-hematologic malignant lesions of the liver may be a challenge owing to the rarity of the disease, and is usually made by histological confirmation. Ultrasound with color Doppler and contrast-enhanced, if required, taking into account the clinical background of the patient, may help to focus the differential diagnosis. In this review, we describe the pathological and ultrasound features of rare malignant neuroendocrine and predominantly epithelioid liver lesions including primary neuroendocrine tumor of the liver, Invasive mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver, and al

Inverted papilloma of the nasal cavity is a benign neoplasm, although it can be locally invasive and has the potential for malignant degeneration. Inverted papilloma of the temporal bone is extremely rare. We describe a case of a 44-year-old woman who was treated for nasal inverted papilloma and was later found to have inverted papilloma of her temporal bone. The patient required several procedures to remove the inverted papilloma from the nasal cavity and temporal bone, and she is currently free of recurrence.

The clinical manifestation was gradually hoarseness for half a year, with aggravation of dyspnea in three days. Physical examination and laryngoscopy showed laryngeal neoplasm, the glottis was not exposed, pedicle, no adhesion with the surrounding. CT scan showed glottic soft-tissue, density, unclear boundary. Enhanced CT showed anterior commissure thickening and tumor invasion of supraglottic region. Preoperative biopsy results: fibroblasts and fibrocyte were arranged in a crisscross pattern. Postoperative pathology showed laryngeal soft tissue sarcoma.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare and aggressive hematologic malignancy arising from plasmacytoid dendritic cell precursors. BPDCN typically manifests in the skin, but it can also evolve into a leukemic form or be complicated by acute myeloid leukemia, some cases with a preceding myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). We herein report the first case of complete spontaneous regression of cutaneous BPDCN followed by acute monocytic leukemia evolving from MDS. This is also the first reported case of gastric BPDCN invasion.

Extramammary Paget's disease is an uncommon intra-epidermal malignant neoplasm that arises in area rich in apocrine glands. Common sites of occurrence include the vulva, perianal region, perineum, and scrotum. The lesion may be accompanied by an invasive adenocarcinoma or adenocarcinoma in situ of the apocrine glands. Generally, the prognosis is poor. Herein, we report two cases of extramammary Paget's disease, one involving the penoscrotal area with bilateral inguinal and pelvic lymph node metastases, the other involving the scrotal area without metastases.

Desmoid tumors are rare, accounting for just 0.03% of all neoplasms and less than 3% of all soft tissue tumors. Although these tumors are benign, they are locally invasive and can cause considerable morbidity and mortality. We describe the case of a 16-year-old female who presented with hydronephroureter secondary to an intra-abdominal desmoid tumor. This case report draws the attention of urologists to the diagnostic dilemma and therapeutic challenges associated with an intra-abdominal mass causing ureteral obstruction especially in young patients.

Spontaneous massive haemothorax is uncommon and usually occurs as a result of pulmonary infarction, arteriovenous fistula, neoplasm, ruptured aortic aneurysm, rupture of pleural adhesions or pleural endometriosis. Massive haemothorax in Von Recklinghausen's disease occurs rarely but with potentially fatal results in spite of surgery. We present a case of a spontaneous massive exsanguinating haemothorax in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 caused by rupture of a branch of the right subclavian artery. Bleeding was probably due to neurofibromatous invasion of the arterial wall.

The authors report a case of american pulmonary histoplasmosis discovered by chance on a chest radiograph in a non immunocompromised patient, back from a stay in French Guyana. Confronted with the negativity of usual mycotic research, diagnosis has been made thanks to wedge excision by video-assisted thoracic surgery. The authors briefly sum up the recent facts regarding this imported infection, stressing the interest of a direct approach by surgical practices not very invasive that allow to eliminate with certainty neoplasm or tuberculosis.

Olfactory neuroblastoma is often misdiagnosed pathologically. The authors reviewed eight such cases in which the pathological findings met strict criteria. These neoplasms are locally invasive in the nose and paranasal sinuses, with frequent intraorbital and intracranial extension as well as distant metastases. A rare primary presentation in the sphenoid sinus-clivus region is described. Computed tomography is the procedure of choice in defining intraorbital extension and is complementary to precision laminagraphy for defining intracranial extension. Angiography frequently shows hypervasculari

INTRODUCTION: Epidermoid cyst(s) arising in an intrapancreatic accessory spleen (ECIPAS) are rare benign lesions that often mimic pancreatic cystic neoplasms on imaging studies. Owing to their rarity and nonspecific radiological features, ECIPAS are frequently misdiagnosed preoperatively, leading to unnecessary pancreatic resections.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report 2 asymptomatic middle-aged women who were incidentally found to have cystic lesions in the tail of the pancreas during routine imaging examinations. Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI demonstrated well-demarcated cystic lesions with low sig
