Some aspects of olfactory sensitivity in the pulmonate Helix pomatia L. were studied by means of neurophysiological and behavioral methods. Single fiber recordings were carried out in the olfactory nerve of the posterior tentacles. Olfactory stimulations with different odors were performed by means of a continuous air stream. We summarize here our experience in the neurophysiological and neuroimaging assessment of spinal and brain neuromodulation for pain relief. We studied the neurophysiological features of five patients (age range: 4-20 years) suffering from Crigler-Najjar syndrome type I (CNsI) by means of multimodal (brainstem, somatosensory, motor) evoked potentials and periodic EEG-polygraphic recordings (follow-up: 3 months-4.5 years). Compression may induce morphological and neurophysiological changes in nerve roots. However, it has also been demonstrated experimentally that nucleus pulposus, without any compression, may induce similar changes when applied epidurally. The present study was undertaken to examine the morphological and functional effects of autologous nucleus pulposus and the combination of nucleus pulposus and compression in a pig model. Nucleus pulposus from a lumbar disc in the same animal was applied epidurally around the first sacral nerve root in the pig, with or without a specially designed constrictor.

This study was conducted to clarify the effects of vibration on the peripheral nerves. Rat tails were exposed to vibration (acceleration 56.9 m/s2, frequency 60 Hz, amplitude 0.4 mm for two or four hours daily, six days a week. Quantitative EEG of 99 workers occupationally exposed to styrene was analyzed and compared to exposure parameters. All of the workers came from reinforced plastics industry. The workplaces and factories were previously evaluated, and the exposure levels were known rather accurately. Neurophysiological tests that asses afferent or efferent pathways of the spinal cord and of nerve roots are used for clinical diagnosis, intraoperative monitoring, and judgement of prognosis. Most tests can readily be performed in awake subjects, whereas many difficulties arise in anesthetized patients in whom neurophysiological testing is the only way of monitoring functional integrity of neural tissue. The research, therefore, that has been carried out in this field during the past year is of special interest.

Botulinum toxin treatment improves dystonic blepharospasm by inducing transient paresis of the orbicularis oculi muscle. Workers using vibrating tools are exposed to vascular and nervous symptoms called vibration syndrome (VS); moreover, the same subjects show increased prevalence of possible carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The authors describe the clinical, biochemical, electrophysiological and ultrastructural study of a case of Refsum's disease whose phenotype suggested other hereditary ataxias. Due to the presence of Babinski sign and optic atrophy and the absence of retinitis pigmentosa, this case can be considered atypical. Electrophysiological and ultrastructural findings confirm the variability of peripheral lesions in this hereditary polyneuropathy.

Dorsal root stimulation, carried out during operation in 80 spastic cerebral palsy patients and in one spastic quadriplegic patient, allowed a study of abnormal monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes. Measurement of motor and sensory conduction velocities, amplitude of M-wave and sensory nerve action potentials, and coaxial needle EMG were used to evaluate function of grafts bridging defects in median, ulnar, and radial nerves in 73 patients.
