BACKGROUND: Regression is a phenomenon present in a variety of cutaneous lesions. It is likely that similar immunologic mechanisms explain the phenomenon of spontaneous regression occurring in the various lesions.
METHODS: Twenty-seven specimens, nine each of halo nevus, keratoacanthoma, and benign lichenoid keratosis, including three examples each of predominantly early, mid, and late regression were examined with antibodies to HLA-II, CD1a, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, CD34, CD56, and CD68.

The authors report the case of a 21-year-old woman with a giant congenital nevocytic nevus (GCNN) who developed vitiligo at the age of 16 years on skin areas remote from the GCNN. This is the first reported case of GCNN developing neurotization combined with vitiliginous changes within the GCNN lesion. Treatment with PUVA achieved repigmentation of the vitiligo lesions, except for the hypochromic areas within the area of the nevus that were shielded from UVA radiation.

A 35-year-old male patient with hexadactyly on the right hand and both feet presented with multiple basal cell carcinomas of the skin. The results of further investigations led to the diagnosis of basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS). The basal cell nevus syndrome (Gorlin-Goltz syndrome) characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, odontogenic cysts, skeletal abnormalities and associated neoplasms belongs to the group of genodermatoses. Reviewing the current literature we discuss aspects of the pathogenesis of the basal cell nevus syndrome as well as diagnosis criteria and treatment options.

We describe a case of melanoma in situ occurring on the oral mucosa in an adolescent male patient who has dysplastic nevus syndrome. This association has not been previously reported and is of interest both because of the rarity of melanoma involving the oral mucosa, particularly in childhood, and because of the lack of any previous reports of oral mucosal melanoma in association with the dysplastic nevus syndrome.

Total-body cutaneous examination of 211 patients with malignant melanoma (MM) and 157 controls showed that patients with MM had significantly more nevi. This is a report of the histochemical and ultrastructural analysis of nevus cell aggregates in the placenta from a neonate with a giant pigmented nevus. Although the distinction between aberrant migration of neural crest elements and blood-borne metastasis from the giant pigmented nevus is not readily resolved, the authors favor the former as an explanation of this unusual placental lesion.

In this work, the incidence of nuchal nevus flammeus was studied in 205 patients suffering from various forms of alopecia areata, as well as in a group of 555 volunteers without alopecia areata examined in our outpatient clinic. The incidence of nuchal nevus flammeus in the totalis-universalis form of alopecia areata was 58.2% (examined patients, n = 79), in ophiasis-extensive forms 22.8% (examined patients, n = 70) and in simple forms of alopecia areata 3.6% (examined patients, n = 56). The recognition of follicular mucinosis as a distinct entity is accorded to Pinkus in a 1957 paper under the title Alopecia mucinosa. A primary and a secondary form is recognised. Recently secondary follicular mucinosis was observed in our laboratory in association with an intradermal and a compound melanocytic nevus. To my knowledge this association has not been reported previously.

We experienced a case of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome with familial onset. The patient was a 32-year-old male with a gallstone and many bluish rubber bleb-like hemangiomas on the skin.
