Acquired melanocytic lesions resembling malignant melanoma have been described in all major categories of Epidermolysis bullosa and referred to as "Epidermolysis bullosa nevi''. They easily induce to diagnostic error, although no malignant transformation has been reported. We report the development of a large acquired melanocytic nevus at a site of recurrent blisters in a 5-year-old child with Epidermolysis bullosa simplex. The global dermoscopic pattern was suggestive of benignity, and the histopathological findings were compatible with a compound melanocytic nevus. This is the first publishe

BACKGROUND: Meyerson phenomenon is an uncommon clinical condition that is characterized by an eczematous halo surrounding a preexisting melanocytic nevus and numerous other lesions. The etiology of this condition is unknown. We suggest that the mechanism is due to the interaction between CD4 T lymphocytes and increased expression of intercellular cell adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1).
OBJECTIVE: This article provides a concise overview of Meyerson phenomenon.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We present the case of a 37-year-old female with an inflamed nevus located on her thigh from no evident cause. Her co

Probably the most common reason to perform biopsy of the nail unit is for the evaluation of irregular pigmentation, especially longitudinal melanonychia or pigmented bands. When narrow and solitary, these are usually the product of melanocytic activation/hypermelanosis, lentigines, or melanocytic nevi. Multiple pigmented bands are generally a benign finding, the result of melanocytic activation, as seen in racial pigmentation in darker-skinned patients, for example. In the context of an irregular, broad, heterogeneous or "streaky" band, the chief concern is the exclusion of subungual melanoma.

Congenital melanocytic nevi are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Although the development of malignant melanoma arising in small and intermediate congenital melanocytic nevi is rare, there is a significant risk of malignant degeneration associated with large congenital melanocytic nevi, in particular those that arise on the torso in the so-called "bathing trunk" distribution, where the risk is estimated to be about 2.5% to 5%. The risk of malignant melanoma arising within a large congenital melanocytic nevus is highest in the first 5 to 10 years of life and carries a significant mort

Giant congenital melanocytic nevi are rare, with an estimated incidence of approximately 1 in 20,000 live births. They increase the lifetime risk for malignant melanoma and neurological deficits, including leptomeningeal melanocytosis and epilepsy. Recently, we encountered two patients in whom giant congenital melanocytic nevi were noted at birth. Case 1 presented with the largest nevus spreading across the posterior scalp, neck, chest wall, shoulder and upper back. At the age of 2 months, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed and no leptomeningeal melanocytosis was found. Case 2 pres

BACKGROUND: Eruptive melanocytic nevi (MN) are a rare phenomenon characterized by the simultaneous, abrupt onset of hundreds of MN, often in a grouped distribution. There are few studies on this topic in the literature. We followed up a patient who developed eruptive MN 38 years ago after Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Herein we document this patient's progress and review the literature on this unusual phenomenon.
OBSERVATIONS: For 38 years, the patient's lesions have remained stable, without signs of malignant degeneration. We discuss the possible etiology and natural history of this condition in

The main epiluminescence microscopy (ELM) patterns observed on volar acquired melanocytic naevi are the parallel-furrow, the lattice-like and the fibrillar patterns. Because of the peculiar arrangement and configuration of epidermal rete ridges in the glabrous skin, the traditional histological picture does not provide an exact correlation with ELM features. In particular, the fibrillar pattern lacks a histopathological correlate. To clarify the microscopic features of the fibrillar pattern, we used transverse histological sectioning to study an acquired compound melanocytic naevus of the sole

Congenital nevi (CN) can be recognized at birth or shortly thereafter. In adults, only those nevi over 5 cm in diameter can be assumed to be congenital in the absence of documentation in infancy. CN cannot be identified with certainty by histological examination, nor can melanomas be presumed to originate from CN on the basis of histologic findings. Up to 5% of patients with large CN (as defined by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus information) will develop melanoma, and 80% of these will appear before the age of seven years. Increased risk of melanoma from smaller CN has not b

A 79-year-old male with psoriasis developed a zosteriform acantholytic dyskeratotic epidermal naevus during PUVA therapy. The eruption was successfully treated with etretinate 0.75 mg/kg/day and a subsequent course of PUVA with the affected area covered prevented a recurrence of the naevus.

Epidermal naevus of the acanthokeratolytic (epidermolytic) type is a mosaic birth defect. The underlying mutation may also be present in the gonads and can then be transmitted to the next generation. The affected child, however, will always show a diffuse involvement of the entire body in the form of bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma. In other words, the phenotype can be transmitted, but not the mosaic. This explains why acanthokeratolytic epidermal naevus always affects the parent and never the child when it is observed in a family together with bullous congenital ichthyosiform er

Crescentic subcutaneous pedicle flaps prepared on the area lateral to the alar base were designed to cover the skin defects in and around the philtrum. In 1 patient a combination of the lateral lip advancement flap and the crescentic subcutaneous pedicle flap was applied to the skin defect on the lateral lip and philtrum. In another patient, a combination of two crescentic subcutaneous pedicle flaps was applied to the skin defect within the philtrum. Both methods have been successful.

Of the present series comprising 66 newborns with cleft lip, 13 (20%) had pigmented macules in the labial skin on the lateral side of the cleft. Histological examination using serial sections were performed on 47 cases and showed evidence of dermal melanocytosis in 40 cases (85%) consisting of 33 (70%) without clinically detectable macules and 7 (15%) with obvious pigmented macules. The fusiform cells in the dermis were positive for dopa reaction and anti-melanocyte antibody. The high incidence of dermal melanocytosis is comparable to that of common Mongolian spots in Asian babies.

A malignant melanoma developed in a 2-year-old Hispanic girl with a giant congenital melanocytic nevus (bathing-trunk type). Histopathologic evaluation showed a deep-seated tumor arising from a nonepidermal origin. Cytogenetic analysis demonstrated multiple chromosomal abnormalities in hyperdiploid cells (chromosome range, 56 to 61). No two karyotypes were identical, but many abnormalities were common to all analyzed cells, suggesting both karyotypic instability and evolution. The metaphases were monosomic for 3, 12, and 16, trisomic for 1, 2, 8, 19, 20, and 21, and included structural aberrat

The authors describe 4 patients with Becker's nevus (BN) in two families. Another 4 patients of the german literature are also presented. Together with the first two published cases of BN, familial BN is now known in 10 patients. All three clinical types of BN could be noticed.

A case of lentigo maligna melanoma on the vermilion of the right lower lip which invaded deeply along the mental nerve is described. The patient also had sensory loss and numbness in the area innervated by the mental nerve, which was the only sign of this rare mode of invasion in this case. Early excision of the lentigo maligna lesion is stressed, and if the patient complains of sensory disturbances in the area of the lesion, this might be a sign of deep invasion of the tumour along the nerve bundle.
