Using non-verbal communication to support de-escalation in patients experiencing acute psychosis in the emergency department.

Emergency nurses are frequently the first point of contact for patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with the symptoms of acute psychosis. Altered perception, fear and disorganised thinking can impair communication and precipitate distress, which may lead to agitation or aggressive behaviour, placing patients and staff at increased risk of harm. In these circumstances, verbal reasoning alone may be ineffective. Evidence indicates that non-verbal communication, such as body posture, eye-level alignment, proximity and tone of voice, can have a pivotal role in these situations by p

Nurses' Ethical Reasoning About Digital Ethical Risks: A Vignette-Elicited Qualitative Study.

AIM: This qualitative study aimed to explore how nurses reason ethically about potential digital ethical risks arising from the routine use of digital systems in clinical practice and the strategies they propose to address these risks in response to vignette-based scenarios. BACKGROUND: Digital systems shape nursing documentation, monitoring, communication, education, and decision-making. Although they support care, digital ethical risks may arise when digital outputs are accepted without clinical verification, patients are not adequately informed, or data protection is weak. DESIGN: A vigne

Chronic venous leg ulcer care: Putting the patient at the heart of leg ulcer care Part 2: Development and evaluation of the consultation template.

Part 2 in this article series summarises the final two phases of a study which explored the experiences of patients with leg ulcers and the impact of this condition on their quality of life. Early phases of the study revealed a mismatch between issues that affected a patient's quality of life and what they discussed during subsequent health care consultations. In light of this, a nominal group technique was employed to facilitate the development of a new leg ulcer consultation template with patient partners. The aim of this was to include many of the issues raised in phases 1. The new template

Effects of group discussion and guided patient care experience on nurses' attitudes towards care of patients with AIDS.

Nurses with limited experience in caring for persons with AIDS (PWAs) were randomized into three groups receiving an educational session on universal precautions and (a) three group discussion sessions; (b) three sessions of caring for a PWA; or (c) assessment materials only. Both interventions were conducted by a nursing instructor experienced in care of PWAs and infectious diseases over a 3-4 week period. Measures included instruments for assessing prejudicial attitudes towards homosexual PWAs, self-ratings of infectious disease knowledge, ratings of perceived comfort and confidence in carin

Pelvic examinations and access to oral hormonal contraception.

OBJECTIVE: Requiring a pelvic examination before prescribing oral contraception poses an unnecessary barrier to contraceptive access. Medical guidelines have outlined the safety of oral contraception provision without a pelvic examination, yet little is known about the practices of clinicians providing reproductive health care. Our purpose was to investigate clinicians' requirements for pelvic examination and what may account for practice differences. METHODS: We administered a mailed survey to a national probability sample of obstetrician-gynecologists (ob-gyns), family medicine physicians,

Making chicken pox prevention a priority.

School nurses are the IDEAL professionals to catch those kids without a history of chicken pox (varicella illness) who have not been immunized, thereby falling into the susceptible range. We handle charts daily. We have both illness history (if it was provided) and immunization dates. We can call parents. We can talk to kids. Wouldn't it be easy if we could do that and then call (or email) the primary care provider? But there is no longer an "easy" way to communicate health information. Doing things the easy way could be perceived by some as "tattling" and by others as "reporting without permi

The mediating role of e-health literacy in nursing students' knowledge and anxiety about monkeypox: a cross-sectional study from Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Monkeypox, recently classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the WHO, presents new challenges for global health systems. As future frontline providers, nursing students play a key role in disease prevention, yet limited knowledge and low health literacy may impair their readiness and heighten anxiety. This study assessed nursing students' knowledge and anxiety regarding Monkeypox and examined the mediating role of e-health literacy. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey. The sample included 502 nursing students from variou

Validity and Reliability Diabetic Foot Check-up as a Simple Screening Test of Diabetic Foot Ulcers in a Community.

Early detection of PAD and neuropathy is essential to prevent diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). The study aimed to identify the inter reliability of diabetic foot check-up (Ipswich touch test [IpTT] and palpation of the dorsal pedis and posterior tibialis) between nurses and caregivers. An inter-operator observation study between nurses and caregivers was conducted to evaluate the reliability of diabetic foot check-up in eight public health centers in eastern Indonesia. Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) with and without diabetic foot ulcer (DFU, n  =  144) were included in this study. The nurse d

The district nurse and the district physician in health care teams. An analysis of the content of primary health care.

An assessment of community nursing in relation to physician care has been made in a Swedish primary care district. The staff was organized in health care teams. A totally integrated, comprehensive care service for everyone in the geographically defined district was made possible, as all members of the team used the same medical records. Visits in district care (district nurse, practical nurse) amounted to more than 50% of the visits to the teams. The visiting pattern in district care was dominated by the young and the old, the ages below 5 years of age making 3.7 visits per year, and the ages

Menstruating while homeless: navigating access to products, spaces, and services.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) in the United States face substantial challenges related to menstruation, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited access to period products, heightened stigma, and gynecological challenges contribute to increased hardships for PEH, highlighting the need for improved services and policies to address period equity and overall well-being for this vulnerable population. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with PEH (n = 12) and community healthcare and social service providers (e.g., case managers, shelter directors,

Using a Vulnerability Theoretical Model to Assess the Malignant Hyperthermia Susceptible Population: Implications for Advanced Practice Emergency Nurses.

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a high-risk, low-occurrence medical emergency with symptoms that include a severe increased rate of metabolic activity and rigid skeletal muscles. Clinicians should be knowledgeable and prepared for an MH event because it can occur in areas outside the operating room and without anesthetic triggers. Patients who have this rare genetic condition may come to the emergency department (ED) presenting with symptoms of heat stroke. However, the incidence of suspected MH in the ED or other critical care areas is not easily quantifiable because clinicians may not report

"My nurse taught me how to have a healthy baby and be a good mother:" nurse home visiting with pregnant women 1888 to 2005.

Nurse home visiting with pregnant women and new mothers in the early decades of the twentieth century was designed to improve birth and newborn outcomes, hasten Americanization of immigrant mothers, and improve their parenting skills. Today the Nurse Family Partnership home visitation program improves newborn and child outcomes by positively influencing maternal role attainment and significantly decreasing maternal smoking and other substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, and children's emergency room visits.
