Lacking Policy, Education, and a Plan to Support Bispecific T-Cell Engager Therapy: Nursing-Led Change at an Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Many large cancer centers have implemented new policies and procedures to manage patients receiving bispecific T-cell engager (BTCE) therapy. OBJECTIVES: A midsize academic center expanded its hematology service, and the institution gained the capacity to offer BTCE therapy and related treatments to patients with a broad range of cancer diagnoses. METHODS: The commencement of the BTCE therapy program required nurses to develop expertise in a new specialized treatment option with differing side effects. The team used a multidisciplinary nursing-led approach to understand and imple

Indications for and principles of intermittent self-catheterization.

Intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) or carer/nurse assisted intermittent catheterization has developed over the past few years as a means of treating patients with bladder emptying problems. Initially the process was designed for patients with the dexterity to carry out the procedure; today, however, more nurses are trained in the technique and are therefore able to support people with coordination problems in carrying out the procedure. Education programmes on catheterization are becoming increasingly popular and many district nurses have become skilled in its practice. This article descr

Enhanced maternal and child health nurse care for women experiencing intimate partner/family violence: protocol for MOVE, a cluster randomised trial of screening and referral in primary health care.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) can result in significant harm to women and families and is especially prevalent when women are pregnant or recent mothers. Maternal and child health nurses (MCHN) in Victoria, Australia are community-based nurse/midwives who see over 95% of all mothers with newborns. MCHN are in an ideal position to identify and support women experiencing IPV, or refer them to specialist family violence services. Evidence for IPV screening in primary health care is inconclusive to date. The Victorian government recently required nurses to screen all mothers when bab

Self-perceived digital literacy, creative self-efficacy, and self-reported innovative behavior among undergraduate nursing students in Anhui, China: a multi-institutional cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing studies have separately linked self-perceived digital literacy with self-reported innovative behavior and the clinical practice environment with creative self-efficacy and innovative behavior. A related association pattern has been reported among Chinese medical students, but joint evidence from multi-institutional nursing samples remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the measurement structure and examine the three-variable association pattern among self-perceived general digital literacy, creative self-efficacy, and self-reported innovative behavior in nursing students

[Application of Evidence-Based Healthcare in Clinical Translation: An Interdisciplinary Collaboration Experience].

This article was written to describe the authors' interprofessional collaboration experience with regard to the clinical translation of evidence-based healthcare. Building upon the spirit of evidence-based medicine invoked at the founding of the Cochrane Centre at Oxford University under the United Kingdom's National Health Service in 1992, our institution recognizes nursing as the core driving force supporting the translation of evidence-based healthcare in clinical settings. Using interdisciplinary collaboration mechanisms, systematic education and training, and knowledge translation strateg

Music Therapy and Nursing Cotreatment in Integrative Hospice and Palliative Care.

Integrative hospice and palliative care is a philosophy of treatment framing patients as whole persons composed of interrelated systems. The interdisciplinary treatment team is subsequently challenged to consider ethical and effective provision of holistic services that concomitantly address these systems at the end of life through cotreatment. Nurses and music therapists, as direct care professionals with consistent face-to-face contact with patients and caregivers, are well positioned to collaborate in providing holistic care. This article introduces processes of referral, assessment, and tr

[Creating an integrated nursing curriculum].

During the last two decades, Brazilian society has gone through great changes into political, ideological and economical fields. These changes left their strings into society, specially in population health. The nurse formation based on the Law n(o) 5540/68 and on the Statement n(o) 163/72, no more meets population demands. Since 1992, the Nursing Faculty of UERJ-FEUerj intensifies the reflection movement upon teaching-learning process searching for transforming its own reality. The making of this project presents two complementary and important reasons: FEUerj docents and discents' desire in

Life's final journey: the oncology nurse's role.

Despite advances in technology and science, many people diagnosed with cancer are likely to die from the disease. Because of the long-term relationships that oncology nurses develop with patients and their families during lengthy treatment periods, they are the most appropriate clinicians to provide care across the continuum and through the final journey. Care of patients in the final days of life requires a comprehensive knowledge of common syndromes, skillful assessment, and adept clinical management. Nurses cannot focus solely on the needs of patients; family members often are unaware of th

Development of a non-melanoma skin cancer detection model.

BACKGROUND: The incidence and prevalence of skin cancer is rising. A detection model could support the (screening) process of diagnosing non-melanoma skin cancer. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed containing potential actinic keratosis (AK) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) characteristics. Three nurses diagnosed 204 patients with a lesion suspicious of skin (pre)malignancy and filled in the questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses generated prediction models for AK and BCC. RESULTS: A prediction model containing nine characteristics correctly predicted the presence or absence of AK in

Nurses' health and work experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in Swedish prehospital and hospital care: a deductive content analysis through the lens of the swAge model.

Working as a nurse offers job security but also poses risks for mental health issues. This study aims to explore factors and processes that affected health and work experiences among nurses in Sweden during the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 nurses from high COVID-19 patient load areas (ambulance, emergency departments, ICU, infection wards, and specialized COVID-19 wards). A deductive content analysis using the SwAge model's nine determinant areas, was performed. The COREQ-checklist was adhered to. Nurses were prepared to sacrifice their health for the we

Influenza-1918.

Editor's note: From its first issue in 1900 through to the present day, AJN has unparalleled archives detailing nurses' work and lives over more than a century. These articles not only chronicle nursing's growth as a profession within the context of the events of the day, but they also reveal prevailing societal attitudes about women, health care, and human rights. Today's nursing school curricula rarely include nursing's history, but it's a history worth knowing. To this end, From the AJN Archives highlights articles selected to fit today's topics and times. Serving the needs of donor families: the role of the critical care nurse.

The humanitarian act of donating organs has tremendous benefits not only for the transplant recipients but also for the family of the donor. The opportunity to provide some hope to a grief-stricken family that something positive can result from their tragedy is an important contribution that a critical care nurse can make. The nurse's participation in recognizing the possibility of organ donation for the family of a terminal patient can drastically reduce the national shortage of transplantable organs. The consent and organ recovery process is a complex one, and a team approach by the nurse, p
