Overview of Inherited Zinc Deficiency in Infants and Children.

Zinc nutrition is of special practical importance in infants and children. Poor zinc absorption causes zinc deficiency, which leads to a broad range of consequences such as alopecia, diarrhea, skin lesions, taste disorders, loss of appetite, impaired immune function and neuropsychiatric changes and growth retardation, thus potentially threatening life in infants and children. In addition to dietary zinc deficiency, inherited zinc deficiency, which rarely occurs, is found during the infant stage and early childhood. Recent molecular genetic studies have identified responsible genes for two inhe

Vitamin A deficiency disorders in children and women.

Vitamin A deficiency is an endemic nutrition problem throughout much of the developing world, especially affecting the health and survival of infants, young children, and pregnant and lactating women. These age and life-stage groups represent periods when both nutrition stress is high and diet likely to be chronically deficient in vitamin A. Approximately 127 million preschool-aged children and 7 million pregnant women are vitamin A deficient. Health consequences of vitamin A deficiency include mild to severe systemic effects on innate and acquired mechanisms of host resistance to infection an

Oral manifestations of hematologic and nutritional diseases.

Oral manifestations of hematologic and nutritional deficiencies can affect the mucous membranes, teeth, periodontal tissues, salivary glands, and perioral skin. This article reviews common oral manifestations of hematologic conditions starting with disorders of the white blood cells including cyclic hematopoiesis (cyclic neutropenia), leukemias, lymphomas, plasma cell dyscrasias, and mast cell disorders; this is followed by a discussion of the impact of red blood cell disorders including anemias and less common red blood cell dyscrasias (sickle cell disease, hemochromatosis, and congenital ery

From Treating Childhood Malnutrition to Public Health Nutrition.

BACKGROUND: This analysis sets out an overview of an IUNS presentation of a European clinician's assessment of the challenges of coping with immediate critical clinical problems and how to use metabolic and a mechanistic understanding of disease when developing nutritional policies. SUMMARY: Critically ill malnourished children prove very sensitive to both mineral and general nutritional overload, but after careful metabolic control they can cope with a high-quality, energy-rich diet provided their initial lactase deficiency and intestinal atrophy are taken into account. Detailed intestinal p

[Multicenter nursing study on the importance of nutritional support for the prevention of bedsores in the elderly at risk].

UNLABELLED: Bedsores prevention is part of the specific role of the nurse, as defined namely in the order 84-869 of the 17. July 1984. The analysis of the risk factors for the appearance of bedsores shows that immobilization, reduction of mobility linked to vigilance disorders and the urinary and faecal incontinence are major elements which justify protocols of well defined local cares. More recently, the role of undernutrition was highlighted but the recommendations lack accuracy. The proteino-energizing undernutrition is frequent among the elderly patients in hospital, reaching 60% of all th

Utility of mid-upper arm circumference in pediatric malnutrition: An Australasian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition consensus statement using the Delphi method.

BACKGROUND: Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) is a simple anthropometric tool used to screen for childhood undernutrition in humanitarian settings or low-income and middle-income countries. However, there is conflicting evidence and a lack of consensus with regard to its diagnostic use in clinical settings or population groups beyond this context. In 2023, a project officer was appointed by the Australasian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AuSPEN) to lead the development of a consensus review into the use of MUAC in the pediatric clinical setting. METHODS: An AuSPEN appointed mul

Zinc and copper metabolism in pregnancy and lactation of adolescent women.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnant and lactating adolescent women are at risk of zinc and copper deficiency but their capacity for metabolic adaptation is poorly known. This study investigated the effect of pregnancy and lactation on zinc and copper metabolism in adolescent women by comparing biochemical indices between groups in different reproductive states. METHODS: Habitual dietary intake and biochemical indices (zinc, copper, alkaline phosphatase, and ceruloplasmin in plasma; zinc [E-Zn], metallothionein [E-MT], and superoxide dismutase [E-SOD] in erythrocytes) and their relation were compared among no

Neurological complications post-liver transplantation: impact of nutritional status.

Nutritional status is significantly altered in patients with end-stage liver disease (cirrhosis). Malnutrition is a common complication of cirrhosis and is known to be associated with a greater risk of post-operative complications and mortality, especially following liver transplantation. Neurological complications occur frequently after transplant and the nature and extent of these complications may relate to nutritional deficits such as protein-calorie malnutrition as well as vitamin and micronutrient deficiencies. A consensus document from the International Society on Hepatic Encephalopathy

Malnutrition in head and neck cancer patients: Impacts and indications of a prophylactic percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients often experience malnutrition before and during treatment. Prophylactic gastrostomy has emerged as an efficient tool for ensuring adequate nutrition. However, there is no suitable algorithm able to identify patients at high risk of malnutrition. The aim of this study was to describe the nutritional management, to assess the impact of prophylactic gastrostomy, and to identify predictors of malnutrition. METHODS: This retrospective study included 152 patients treated with surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy for HNC. The patients were classifi

Nutrition in Chronic Liver Disease: Consensus Statement of the Indian National Association for Study of the Liver.

Malnutrition and sarcopenia are common in patients with chronic liver disease and are associated with increased risk of decompensation, infections, wait-list mortality and poorer outcomes after liver transplantation. Assessment of nutritional status and management of malnutrition are therefore essential to improve outcomes in patients with chronic liver disease. This consensus statement of the Indian National Association for Study of the Liver provides a comprehensive review of nutrition in chronic liver disease and gives recommendations for nutritional screening and treatment in specific clin

Analysis of drug-induced adverse reactions affecting appetite and taste using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report Database.

OBJECTIVE: Pharmacotherapy is a potential risk factor for undernutrition; however, the association between individual drugs and nutrition-related adverse reactions remains unknown. We aimed to explore drugs affecting appetite and taste using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. METHODS: JADER reports (April 2004-January 2025) were analyzed for drug safety signals across seven Preferred Terms (PTs): "Appetite disorder," "Decreased appetite," "Abnormal loss of weight," "Ageusia," "Dysgeusia," "Hypogeusia," and "Taste disorder." Signal detected drugs were classified by therap

Nutrition management in chronic liver disease.

Liver has a central role in nutritional homeostasis and any liver disease leads to abnormalities in nutrient metabolism and subsequent malnutrition. All children with chronic liver disease (CLD) must undergo a periodic nutritional assessment--medical history, anthropometry esp. skinfold thickness and mid-arm circumference, and biochemical estimation of body nutrients. Nutritional rehabilitation is catered to the individual child but generally the caloric intake is increased to 130% of RDA by adding glucose polymers and/or MCT oil (coconut oil) with essential fatty acid supplementation (sunflow

Nutritional status and gastrointestinal structure and function in children with ichthyosis and growth failure.

UNLABELLED: Growth failure occurs in several of the ichthyoses, a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders characterized by thickened or scaly skin. This suggests that there may be common pathogenic mechanisms causing failure to thrive. Previous studies have proposed that a hypermetabolic state induced by epidermal inflammation and hyperproliferation or enteropathy leading to malabsorption and nutritional deficiencies might account for the growth failure in icthyosis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the extent of enteropathy and nutritional deficiency in children with se

Nutrition care and Dietetic Practice in Managing Metabolic and Endocrine Dysfunction in Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS): Implications and Opportunities in the Context of the Name Change of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) to PMOS.

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) affects 8-13% of women across the lifespan. Those with PMOS have reduced quality of life and increased risk of co-morbidities including elevated weight, eating disorders, gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. PMOS is a major population in clinical dietetic practice and dietary intervention is the first-line approach recommended to target metabolic risk in the international evidence-based guidelines for assessment and management of PCOS. The past name, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was ovarian-centric and did not acc

Nutritional support in children undergoing bone marrow transplantation.

Nutritional status and 'well-being' were compared prospectively in 39 children (mean age 8.1 years) who received nutritional support following bone marrow transplantion (BMT): 20 received enteral tube feeding (ETF; six received parenteral nutrition [PN] subsequently) and 19 with oral mucositis received PN (one received ETF subsequently). Poor nutritional status (height for age and/or weight for height and/or mid-arm circumference z-scores <-1) was present in 18 patients and was associated with a longer hospital stay (P = 0. 01). Both ETF and PN groups were comparable with respect to age, pretr
