Metabolic and microstructural brain alterations associated with occupational blast exposure.

Repeated occupational exposure to low-level blast may pose a risk to the neurological health of service members. To date, no studies have specifically investigated the effects of such repetitive exposure using fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). This study aims to characterize cerebral metabolic alterations associated with occupational blast exposure, accounting for confounding factors such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and aging. Male service members with chronic mild TBI (mTBI) were categorized into high-risk (HR; n = 204) and low-risk (LR; n = 68) b

Isolation of a new subspecies, Bartonella vinsonii subsp. arupensis, from a cattle rancher: identity with isolates found in conjunction with Borrelia burgdorferi and Babesia microti among naturally infected mice.

Bacteremia with fever due to a novel subspecies of Bartonella vinsonii was found in a cattle rancher. The subspecies shared major characteristics of the genus Bartonella in terms of most biochemical features and cellular fatty acid profile, but it was distinguishable from other subspecies of B. vinsonii by good growth on heart infusion agar supplemented with X factor and by its pattern of enzymatic hydrolysis of peptide substrates. DNA relatedness studies verified that the isolate belonged to the genus Bartonella and that it was genotypically related to B. vinsonii. The highest level of relate

[Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers].

Numerous data from the medical literature show that working as a hairdresser is associated with the highest risk of occupational contact dermatitis. In Europe, hairdressers rank first of all occupation groups with the highest prevalence of occupational dermatitis. It is estimated that 10-20% and even 50% of hairdressers are affected with skin disorders. Skin problems occur soon after commencing hairdressing, in the first 2 years of work, sometimes during vocational training. The most common factors contributing to skin damage include water, shampoos, detergents, conditioners, hair dyes, bleach
