Oil/saline partition coefficients for inhaled compounds often are defined by the ratio of the separately determined oil/gas and saline/gas partition coefficients. This approach assumes that the concurrent presence of oil with saline has no effect on the characteristics of either solvent. To test this assumption, we measured the oil/gas and saline/gas partition coefficients for CF3(CCIF)2CF3 and 1,2-dichloroperfluorocyclobutane (C4Cl2F6) separately and with the two phases mixed in a common container. Patients frequently complain of visual changes after intraocular silicone oil injection. The degree of these changes as well as refractive changes were analyzed in 11 aphacic eyes that had a postoperative visual acuity of at least 0.1. Visual acuity and refraction were obtained with the patients in a supine position. In June, 1989, an outbreak of nosocomial listeriosis occurred in Costa Rica. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from 9 ill infants 4 to 8 days old who were born after the delivery of an infant with early onset listeriosis. A 39-year-old metal polishing mechanic had had an acute-on-chronic eczematous eruption on sun-exposed skin for 2 years. It improved in winter. He had been using an insoluble oil, CRT 20, as a cutting oil for 20 years. The cutting oil itself and mineral oil, which was one of its ingredients, showed positive reactions on photopatch testing. The difference action spectrum with or without mineral oil application, assessed at 48 h, ranged from 300 to 350 nm, with a peak at 320 nm. This is the 1st report of photoallergic contact dermatitis due to mineral oil.

Silicone oil is now used with increasing frequency to treat cases of complicated retinal detachment (RD). The authors report their results using silicone oil in eyes with RD resulting from proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) or proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). The retina was completely reattached at last examination in 16 (70%) of 23 eyes with PDR and 20 (67%) of 30 eyes with PVR. Final vision of 5/200 or better was obtained in 5 eyes with PDR (22%) and 16 eyes with PVR (53%) (P = 0.0016). Reproliferation of epiretinal membranes occurred in 26% of diabetics and 23% of eyes with PVR.

Vomiting, drowsiness, metabolic acidosis, polymorphonuclear leucocytosis, and encephalopathy developed in thirteen infants within hours of ingestion of margosa oil. Liver biopsy of one infant and necropsy examination of ICR strain mice after experimentally induced margosa-oil poisoning demonstrated pronounced fatty infiltration of the liver and proximal renal tubules as well as cerebral oedema. Electron microscopy demonstrated mitochondrial damage. These findings indicate that margosa oil may be involved in the aetiology of Reye's syndrome among Indians in Malaysia.

A poly(dimethylsiloxane) type silicone oil containing gamma-mercaptopropyl groups was evaluated for acute toxicity. Acute inhalation, oral and dermal toxicity, primary skin irritation, skin sensitization, eye irritation and human patch testing studies failed to demonstrate any significant response to this functional oil. Transient eye irritation and barely perceptible skin irritation were among the observations. On the basis of the data presented, it is doubtful that any problems of acute toxicity will result from the use of this silicone oil.
