Brief report: child-rearing practices of caregivers with and without a child with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: perspectives of caregivers and professionals.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate predictions from professionals in pediatric rheumatology regarding the child-rearing practices of caregivers of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and healthy classmates. METHODS: Sixteen professionals identified items from the Child-Rearing Practices Report (CRPR) that were expected to differentiate between caregivers of children with JRA (64 mothers, 45 fathers) and caregivers of healthy classmates (64 mothers, 40 fathers). Families were interviewed, and physician ratings of disease severity were obtained. RESULTS: Experts predicted difficulties in pro

Failed paediatric laryngotracheoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical experience with the surgical treatment of paediatric laryngeal stenosis is decreasing, and therefore it is important to highlight the factors that may contribute to failure. METHOD: Retrospective study of 28 children undergoing laryngotracheoplasty (LTP) for laryngeal stenosis was carried out over an 11-year period. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients were decannulated after their initial surgery. One child died prior to stent removal, and the initial surgery was unsuccessful in six patients. Four of these underwent a second LTP. Three additional patients were decannulated, i

Transplantation of cord blood progenitor cells can promote bone resorption in autosomal recessive osteopetrosis.

Allogeneic BMT has been reported to be the only curative therapy for children with juvenile autosomal recessive osteopetrosis. We report the case of a 14-month-old child in whom bone resorption was observed after cord blood transplantation (CBT). The patient was given CBT from an unrelated newborn matched for five of six HLA antigens. At the time of transplantation, the child presented with neurological symptoms, with feeding problems and visual impairment. A successful engraftment of donor hematopoiesis was demonstrated and the child experienced grade I acute GVHD. Progressive bone clearing w

[Familial Behçet's disease--a case report].

We reported a case of mother and child affected with Behçet's disease. Both had recurrent oral ulcer, erythema nodosum and arthralgia. Neither had gastrointestinal manifestation nor central nervous system involvement. The mother represented positive pathergy test, but the child did not. Laboratory data suggested no severe sign of inflammatory reaction and increased levels of immunoglobulin D. She was diagnosed as incomplete form, and he was diagnosed as suspicious form of Behçet's disease. On HLA examination, they had common haplotypes of HLA A24, B61, Cw1 and DR8. Additionally, haplotypes of

PTSD Risk Factors and Acute Pain Intensity Predict Length of Hospital Stay in Youth after Unintentional Injury.

Background: Many hospitals have adopted screening tools to assess risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after pediatric unintentional injury in accordance with American College of Surgeons recommendations. The Screening Tool for Early Predictors of PTSD (STEPP) is a measure initially developed to identify youth and parents at high risk for meeting diagnostic criteria for PTSD after injury. Acute pain during hospitalization has also been examined as a potential predictor of maladaptive outcomes after injury, including PTSD. We investigated in a retrospective cohort study whether the STE

Experience with outreach services of a multidisciplinary team for child abuse identification.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Identifying child abuse is sometimes challenging due to its various presentations. To facilitate timely identification of critical or complex cases of physical abuse outside our child protection center, we established an outreach multidisciplinary team (OMDT) to support Kaohsiung City Government in 2014. The objective of this study was to describe our experience of OMDT services during a 6-year period and examine its role in assisting law enforcement. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed all OMDT cases from January 2014 to January 2020. Clinical characteristics and OMDT re

Maternal distress and child neuroendocrine and immune regulation.

RATIONALE: Neuroendocrine-immune regulation is essential for maintaining health. Early-life adversity may cause dysregulation in the neuroendocrine-immune network through repeated activation of the stress response, thereby increasing disease risk. OBJECTIVE: This paper examined the extent to which maternal psychological well-being moderates neuroendocrine-immune relations in children. METHODS: We used data from a laboratory-based study of mothers and their five-year old children (n = 125 mother-child pairs) conducted from 2011 to 2013 in Baltimore, Maryland. Child saliva was assayed for mark

Maternal mental health and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors: Beyond maternal substance use disorders.

Maternal substance abuse and mental disorders can have adverse impacts on child development. We investigated the impact of maternal mental health on child behaviors based on a long-term follow-up study of mothers and their children approximately 10 years after mothers' admission to drug abuse treatment. Mothers (n=396) were assessed at admission to drug treatment during 2000 to 2002, and at follow-up in 2010-2011. At follow-up, each mother was asked to assess one target child using the Child Behavior Checklist for ages 6-18 (CBCL). Mothers' mental disorder diagnoses were obtained from records

Targeting epidermal lipids for treatment of Mendelian disorders of cornification.

BACKGROUND: Inherited ichthyoses or Mendelian disorders of cornification (MeDOC) are clinically heterogeneous disorders with high unmet therapeutic needs, which are characterized by skin hyperkeratosis and scaling. Some MeDOC types are associated with defects of the epidermal lipid metabolism, resulting in perturbed barrier permeability and subsequent epidermal hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis and inflammation. An example is the CHILD (congenital hemidysplasia with ichthyosiform nevus and limb defects) syndrome, an X-linked dominant multisystem MeDOC caused by mutations in the NSDHL (NAD(P)H steroi

ADAMTS13 activity may predict the cumulative survival of patients with liver cirrhosis in comparison with the Child-Turcotte-Pugh score and the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score.

AIM: Decreased plasma ADAMTS13 activity (ADAMTS13:AC) results in accumulation of unusually large von Willebrand factor multimers and platelet thrombi formation. Our aim was to evaluate whether ADAMTS13:AC is a prognostic marker in patients with liver cirrhosis. METHODS: Plasma ADAMTS13:AC and its related parameters were examined in 108 cirrhotic patients. RESULTS: ADAMTS13:AC decreased as the severity of liver disease increased (means: controls 100%, Child A-cirrhotics 79%, Child B-cirrhotics 63%, and Child C-cirrhotics 31%). ADAMTS13:AC markedly decreased in the cirrhotics with hepatorenal
