Ophthalmologic clinical features of ocular myasthenia gravis.

To investigate the clinical features of ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG) in ophthalmology. A total of 28 patients with ptosis or diplopia who were followed for at least 6 months between March 2016 and February 2022 were included in this study. The clinical symptoms of the patients and test results were analyzed. According to the positivity of serologic or electrophysiologic test, these patients were divided into 2 groups (positive and negative OMG results) and according to the clinical symptoms of diplopia or ptosis for comparison. Ptosis, diplopia, and both ptosis and diplopia were present in 6…

Association Between Vitamin Deficiencies and Ophthalmological Conditions.

Vitamin deficiencies can have adverse effects on health, including on the visual system. The ocular manifestations of a vitamin deficiency are related to the underlying biochemical function of the particular nutrient. While vitamin deficiencies are not common in developed counties, they are still prevalent in parts of the developing world and in specific, vulnerable populations. Vitamin deficiencies can cause or contribute to many ophthalmological conditions and eye diseases may even be the first presenting finding of a vitamin deficiency. As such, it is important for ophthalmologists to be aw

Ophthalmologic manifestations in myasthenia gravis: presentation and prognosis.

We investigated the ophthalmologic manifestations and factors that influence outcomes in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). We retrospectively analyzed the prevalence of neuro-ophthalmologic findings and clinical and outcome measures of 100 consecutive patients (53 males, 47 females), aged 55.7 ± 17.5 (range 15-85) years with an established diagnosis of MG. Forty-eight patients had purely ocular symptoms at the onset of disease (OMG) and 52 patients presented with generalized symptoms (GMG). Overall, 21 patients presented with extraocular muscle (EOM) weakness. Bilateral EOM weakness was se

Neuro-Ophthalmological Manifestations of Craniosynostosis: Current Perspectives.

Craniosynostosis, a premature fusion of cranial sutures that can be isolated or syndromic, is a congenital defect with a broad, multisystem clinical spectrum. The visual pathway is prone to derangements in patients with craniosynostosis, particularly in syndromic cases, and there is a risk for permanent vision loss when ocular disease complications are not identified and properly treated early in life. Extensive advancements have been made in our understanding of the etiologies underlying vision loss in craniosynostosis over the last 20 years. Children with craniosynostosis are susceptible to

Ophthalmologic approach to babies with cerebral visual impairment.

Despite the availability of different classes of drugs for the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders, there are a number of clinically significant unmet needs, such as a high prevalence of treatment resistance, partial response, subsyndromal symptomatology, recurrence and relapse. With the approval of atypical antipsychotics, which are associated with a lower adverse effect burden than typical antipsychotics, consideration of their off-label use for the treatment of affective disorders and various other psychiatric disorders has become a viable option. However, consideration should be

Acute Closed-Angle Glaucoma-an Ophthalmological Emergency.

BACKGROUND: Acute closed-angle glaucoma has an incidence of 2.2-4.1 cases per 100 000 persons per year in Europe. It is an ophthalmological emergency in which markedly elevated intraocular pressure can damage vision permanently. Because the acute symptoms are not always clearly referable to the eyes, patients often present to physicians who are not ophthalmologists. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent articles retrieved by a selective search in PubMed. RESULTS: The diverse symptoms of acute closed-angle glaucoma include eye redness, worsening of vision and other visual disturbances, h

[Ophthalmological manifestations of post-COVID-19 syndrome].

The review presents data on damage to the organ of vision in patients recovered from the new coronavirus infection reflecting on the results obtained by various researchers from examining patients with varying severity of the disease, both during the active stage and after recovery. Possible ways of transmission of the infectious agent into the organ of vision were analyzed. The most common ocular manifestation of COVID-19 is conjunctivitis, while lesions of the retina and optic nerve were noted less often. The article also outlines the strategy for treatment and describes infection prevention

Psoriasis beyond the skin: Ophthalmological changes (Review).

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that may be associated with abnormal T-lymphocyte function. Ocular manifestations associated with psoriasis, particularly artropathic or pustular psoriasis, usually affect men, often during exacerbations of the disease. It has been reported that eye damage tends to occur later compared with cutaneous or joint manifestations, blindness being the most disabling complication. Previous studies have focused on ophthalmic manifestations and identified several etiopathogenic mechanisms. Psoriasis may be associated with e

Ophthalmologic examinations under the acute influence of alcohol.

Alcohol is the most widely used recreational drug in Western countries. It affects the psychophysical performance in different ways, e.g. by reducing cognitive functions, causing coordination disturbances or impairing vision. Visual impairments both concern oculomotor and visual sensory functions, such as decreased mesopic vision, decreased field of vision and an increase of saccadic eye movements. During cycling trials with alcoholised test persons, repeated measurements of (1.) the time needed to read a 50-word text, (2.) the time to perform a swing test by tenfold touching the moving finger

Visual hallucinations in psychiatric, neurologic, and ophthalmologic disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent studies have increased our understanding of the biochemical and structural bases of visual hallucinations in patients with a variety of underlying causes. RECENT FINDINGS: Visual hallucinations may be related to disruption of functional connectivity networks, with underlying biochemical dysfunction such as decreased in cholinergic activity. Structural abnormalities in primary and higher order visual processing areas also have been found in patients with visual hallucinations. The occurrence of visual hallucinations after vision loss, the Charles Bonnet syndrome, may

Imaging of Nontraumatic Orbital and Neuro-ophthalmological Emergencies.

Emergency department (ED) visits for eye and vision-related concerns are common. In most cases, accurate diagnosis is made using clinical history and physical exam findings without the need for emergent imaging. When orbital imaging is performed in the ED, it is often in patients with orbital trauma where CT is used to assess for orbital fractures and associated injuries. However, CT or MR imaging can also be critical to appropriately diagnose and manage certain ED patients with nontraumatic eye and vision-related conditions. The purpose of this article is to review the imaging findings and di

Ophthalmological injuries associated with fractures of the orbitozygomaticomaxillary complex.

Our aim was to evaluate ophthalmological injuries associated with fractures of the orbitozygomaticomaxillary complex that required operative treatment, and we collected data retrospectively over a period of five years (2012-2016 inclusive). Of the 190 patients, 162 were male with a median age of 31 (IQR 25 -39) years. Assault was the most common mechanism of injury (125/190, 66%). Minor ophthalmic injuries (those unlikely to cause permanent visual disturbance) and major ophthalmic injuries (those with the potential to cause permanent visual disturbance) were recorded. The common minor ophthalm

Ophthalmologic Manifestations Associated With Zika Virus Infection.

Vision plays an important role in the development of communication, social interaction, spatial awareness, and the motor skills needed to explore the environment. In the past 2 years, researchers have described the broad spectrum of clinical features that comprise congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). The ocular manifestations are considered 1 important pillar of this new entity. The most characteristic ophthalmic findings include chorioretinal scars and focal pigmentary changes seen in the macular region. Since these findings were first reported, other researchers have validated and extended them,
