BACKGROUND: Little information is available about the pattern of ear diseases in the elderly population. Therefore, the present study aims to determine the pattern of ear diseases among elderly Nigerians, so as to provide an objective basis for cost-effective health care planning for the emerging geriatric population.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 320 patients aged 60 years or older presenting with ear diseases at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria, between January 1996 and December 2001 was carried out.

We report on our experience with nonsurgical office closure of tympanic membrane pars tensa perforations with the little-used but well-established Derlacki method, a procedure that had been in general use before the introduction of tympanoplasty more than a half century ago. We describe our results--including a success rate of 84.2%--in treating 81 perforations during the 6-year span from 1996 through 2001.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic inflammatory medial meatal fibrotizing otitis (IMFO) is rare. Only a few cases with unknown cause have been reported.
OBJECTIVE: To report 3 cases of IMFO as a specific diagnostic entity.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two adults and 1 child with bilateral IMFO were observed for several years at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of Helsinki University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland.

This study was designed to compare the efficacy of various methods of transmeatal aerodynamical otoendoscopy based on the examination of 60 patients presenting with acute suppurative otitis media (CSOM), chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), exudative and adhesive otitis media. Transmeatal aerodynamical otoendoscopy was performed with the use of otobarohydroendoscope. The results of the study demonstrate the advantages of the transmeatal aerodynamical otoendoscopic technique for the examination of the patients presenting with different clinical forms of otitis media.
