A retrospective study and gene analysis of canine sterile panniculitis.

In this study, a retrospective analysis was conducted to assess the current aspects and predisposing factors of canine sterile panniculitis. Miniature dachshund, neutered, and younger dogs appeared to be predisposed. In addition, histories of previous surgery and injection were associated in 46.5% of the cases, with several types of surgical suture materials used. About 88% of the dogs had multifocal lesions, frequently with signs of systemic illnesses. Whereas systemic immunosuppressive therapy was effective in most dogs, surgical excision of lesions was rarely curative. In order to prevent r…

Connective tissue panniculitis in a child with vitiligo and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

SUMMARY A 9-year-old girl presented with a 6-month history of inflamed tender nodules in the pretibial area. These eventually healed leaving depressed areas of atrophy and loss of subcutaneous tissue. Histology showed a predominantly lymphocytic lobular panniculitis, consistent with connective tissue panniculitis. Investigations revealed an elevated thyroid stimulating hormone, elevated thyroid antiperoxidase antibody and a weakly positive antinuclear antibody (titre 1 in 40). She was commenced on hydroxychloroquine 300 mg daily, which resulted in resolution of the panniculitis. She developed …

Systemic treatment of sterile panniculitis with tacrolimus and prednisolone in dogs.

This report deals with three additional canine cases of sterile panniculitis treated by oral administration of tacrolimus and prednisolone. The oral tacrolimus treatment was proved to be an affordable medical protocol for canine sterile panniculitis with good efficacy and without adverse effects.

A case of Rothmann-Makai panniculitis successfully treated with tetracycline.

Rothmann-Makai syndrome (lipogranulomatosis subcutanea) is a rare variant of Weber-Christian disease, but lacks visceral involvements and systemic manifestations. We herein report the case of a 56-year-old Chinese woman with this disorder who complained of subcutaneous tender nodules over her extremities, trunk, and face of 2 years' duration. She was firstly treated with 300 mg of oral roxythromycin for 8 weeks and subsequently treated with 400 mg of oral clarithromycin for the next 8 weeks. However, no significant effect was observed. She was then administered 200 mg of oral minocycline hydro

Sclerosing panniculitis is associated with pulmonary hypertension in systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: There have been no reports of patients with sclerosing panniculitis and systemic sclerosis (SSc). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the incidence of sclerosing panniculitis in patients with SSc, and to investigate the clinical features of such cases. METHODS: In total, 128 patients with SSc treated at our clinic were investigated retrospectively. RESULTS: SSc patients with sclerosing panniculitis had pulmonary hypertension (PH), especially isolated PH, at a significantly higher incidence than those without. Among the SSc patients with PH, those with sclerosing panniculitis had pulmonary i…

Use of sterile maggots to treat panniculitis in an aged donkey.

An aged female donkey developed a severe, localised, suppurative panniculitis secondary to a skin wound. Bacterial culture of swabs taken from the wound gave a profuse growth of multi-drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a profuse growth of Escherichia coli and a moderate growth of beta-haemolytic Streptococcus species. The lesion did not respond to conventional medical and surgical treatment and continued to progress. Six applications of sterile larvae (maggots) of the common greenbottle, Lucilia sericata, were used to debride the wound successfully.

[Panniculitis and macrophage activation syndrome in a child with lupus erythematosus].

INTRODUCTION: Panniculitis is rarely presented in the course of systemic lupus erythematosus. When it occurs, it is mainly related to lupus profundus. However, when panniculitis is associated with a reactive hemophagocytic syndrome, panniculitis could be linked to this hemophagocytosis reaction. CASE REPORT: We report a case of an 11-year-old girl treated for several years for systemic lupus erythematosus, who simultaneously presented panniculitis and an hemophagocytic syndrome. The reality of both diagnoses was based on the analysis of biological and histological data. Therapy with immunosup…

A case of cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis associated with exertional rhabdomyolysis.

An 18-year-old man who suffered from panniculitis involving the entire left lower limb after exertional rhabdomyolysis is reported. A high fever (>39 degrees C) and leukocytosis (>20,000/microL) persisted for 1 week, and his general status deteriorated rapidly into pre-disseminated intravascular coagulation, complicated by pleural effusion and prolonged clotting time. His condition was dramatically improved by steroid pulse therapy and he has remained in good health for the 20 months since discharge. Histologic examination of subcutaneous tissue from the swollen left lower limb revealed pleomo…

Weber-Christian panniculitis: a review of 30 cases with this diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: More than 60 years ago, Christian described a panniculitis that was later termed Weber-Christian disease. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether this is a specific disease or a nonspecific disease that embraces several specific conditions. METHODS: We studied 30 cases diagnosed as Weber-Christian panniculitis and found it possible to make a more specific diagnosis. RESULTS: In 12 patients, findings were compatible with erythema nodosum. Six patients had phlebitis or postphlebitic syndrome. Factitial panniculitis was diagnosed in five patients, and trauma…

[An adult case of dermatomyositis complicated with cecum perforation and panniculitis].

The case of dermatomyositis complicated with cecum perforation and panniculitis occurred in a 62-year-old woman was reported. She was admitted to Keio University Hospital with a history of proximal muscular weakness, and dysphagia. Physical examination showed erythema over the face and shoulder. Serum level of muscle enzymes was remarkably increased. The diagnosis of dermatomyositis was made based on proximal muscular weakness, elevated serum level of muscle enzymes and myogenic change of electromyocardiogram. The treatment with 60 mg/day of prednisolone was started, and was a good response. H…

Possible origin of pancreatic fat necrosis as a septal panniculitis.

We describe pancreatic subcutaneous fat necrosis in a man with alcoholism and pancreatitis. The initial specimen, from a 2-day-old lesion, showed a septal inflammatory infiltrate in the subcutis. A second specimen, from a 5-day-old lesion, showed the lobular pattern of enzymatic fat necrosis diagnostic for pancreatic panniculitis. We suggest that the histologic appearance of subcutaneous pancreatic fat necrosis evolves from an early septal reaction to a fully developed lobular panniculitis.

Orbital panniculitis as the initial manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus.

Inflammation of the fat in lupus erythematosus also known as lupus erythematosus profundus (panniculitis) is a rare clinical entity. As the presenting feature of lupus, it is even more unusual. In this report, we describe an elderly woman who presented with an orbital mass infiltrate as the initial manifestation of lupus that had the classical histological features of lupus panniculitis.

Disseminated necrotizing panniculitis and pancreatic nodular hyperplasia in a dog.

An 8-year-old female Poodle had severe necrotizing skin disease characterized by numerous large red-purple, nonpruritic lesions. The larger lesions had soft, intensely discolored centers that contained sterile viscous blood-tinged material. Biopsies of the lesions revealed necrotizing panniculitis (subcutaneous fat necrosis). The dog did not respond to intensive therapy and euthanasia was performed. Necropsy findings included diffuse fat necrosis and pancreatic nodular hyperplasia. A pathoetiologic relation between pancreatic disease and diffuse fat necrosis in this dog was suggested.
