Chronic Effects of the Sympathetic Nervous System in Inflammatory Models.

The immune system is embedded in a network of regulatory systems to keep homeostasis in case of an immunologic challenge. Neuroendocrine imm … level, it has been shown across models that the SNS is activated in inflammation as opposed to the parasympathetic nervous system. Permanent overactivity of the SNS contributes to many of the known disease sequelae. One goal of neuroendocrine immune research is defining new therapeutic targets. In this respect, it will be discussed that at least in arthritis, it might be benef …

Autonomic nervous system correlates of past and prospective suicidal thoughts and behaviors in Mexican-origin youth.

Few studies have examined prospective or neurobiological predictors of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) in Latino youth. We hypothesized that autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity at baseline and in response to social exclusion would distinguish Mexican-origin adolescents with versus without histories of suicidality, and would predict subsequent suicidality. Skin conductance responses and respiratory sinus arrhythmia, indicators of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, respectively, were recorded at baseline and during Cyberball exclusion trials, in 229 Mexican-origin youths (M = 17

From Beat to Risk: How Heart Rate Variability Predicts Arrhythmias in Type 2 Diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with major cardiovascular complications, including cardiac autonomic neuropathy, which contributes to sympathetic-parasympathetic imbalance and increases susceptibility to arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Heart rate variability, assessed through R-R intervals on electrocardiography and 24 h Holter monitoring, represents a sensitive, non-invasive marker of autonomic dysfunction and arrhythmogenic risk. In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic hyperglycaemia, oxidative stress, and metabolic inflammation lead to early impairment of the autonom

Autonomic modulation of ventricular rate in atrial fibrillation.

This study investigated the changes in R-R interval in 23 patients (11 men and 12 women; mean age 61 yr) with persistent atrial fibrillation in response to several provocative maneuvers including active postural change, Valsalva maneuver, handgrip, and rhythm-controlled respiration. Averaged R-R intervals were shortened immediately after postural change (from 797 +/- 35 ms supine to 677 +/- 27 ms standing; P < 0.01) and recovered to the 90% level within 100 s. During Valsalva strain and handgrip, mean R-R intervals were significantly shortened (from 737 +/- 37 ms sitting to 697 +/- 38 ms in Va

Prostaglandin-targeting agents and spectral heart rate variability in experimental partial bladder outlet obstruction in rats.

The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), using spectral analysis of the heart rate variability (HRV) in the model of partial bladder outlet obstruction (PBOO) in rats treated with selected non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID): piroxicam (PRX) or meloxicam (MLX), and following administration of PGF2a prostaglandin analogue (Enzaprost F5). Neither the use of PGF2a analogue nor of MLX, caused significant changes in the HRV spectrum (except for HRV spectrum total power reduction with MLX). The use of PRX caused reduction of the total p

Autonomic nervous system activity in premature and full-term infants from theoretical term to 7 years.

The premature population reaching theoretical term suffers from a major deficit in autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, as can be seen from heart rate variability indices. Whether this autonomic function recovers in the long term is not yet established. Thus, we analyzed and compared ANS activity indices, at birth or at the time of the theoretical term, and at ages 2-3 and 6-7 years, in two populations: a group of 30 premature children and a reference group of 14 full-term age-matched newborns. Using Fourier Transform analysis, we studied 24-h ECG Holter recordings to establish heart rate

Effect of acute inhibition of nitric oxide synthesis by L-NAME on cardiovascular responses following peripheral autonomic blockade in rabbits.

The pressor and chronotropic responses to acute inhibition of nitric oxide synthase enzyme by N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) were studied in anaesthetized rabbits with intact autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Also, they were investigated when administration of L-NAME was preceded by peripheral autonomic blockade. Autonomic blockade had different forms: ganglionic (hexamethonium-induced), post-ganglionic beta-adrenergic blockade (propranolol induced), parasympathetic blockade (atropine induced), and complete autonomic blockade by coadministration of hexamethonium and atropin

Cardiac sympathetic denervation in early stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis demonstrated by 123I-MIBG-SPECT.

Involvement of the autonomic cardiac nervous system in early stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was evaluated in 40 patients. I-123-metaiodobenzylguanidine-single photon emission computed tomography (MIBG-SPECT) and heart rate variability (HRV) yielded information about sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation of the heart. MIBG-SPECT is a sensitive diagnostic method for demonstration of early cardiac sympathetic denervation. Both sympathetic and parasympathetic dysfunction was observed in 16 (40%) out of 40 patients. Mean cardiac MIBG uptake as demonstrated by the heart/mediasti

Selective effect of general anesthetics on reflex bronchoconstrictor responses in dogs.

To determine which part of the parasympathetic bronchoconstrictor pathway is most sensitive to depression by general anesthetics, we stimulated different parts of the pathway in dogs after initial anesthesia with chloralose and urethan and then after additional anesthetic drugs. We stimulated the entire reflex pathway by producing apnea or hypoventilation, the sensory pathway by electrically stimulating the proximal end of cut superior laryngeal nerves, and the motor pathway by stimulating the distal end of a cut cervical vagus nerve. Bronchoconstrictor responses to all stimuli were assessed w

Autonomic Function Tests, Heart Rate Variability, and Electrophysiological Evaluation in Patients With a Primary Episodic Headache: An Observational Study.

PURPOSE: Cranial autonomic symptoms are typically associated with the trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias and also present in substantial cases of migraine. Autonomic nervous system dysfunctions are also been reported in headache disorders and postulated to promote headache attacks. This study was aimed to evaluate the parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic functions tests in patients with a episodic primary headache and to investigate, if any, electrophysiological abnormalities in the blink reflex test and sympathetic skin response test in these patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional st

Autonomic control of cardiovascular performance and whole body O2 delivery and utilization in swine during treadmill exercise.

OBJECTIVE: The present study determined the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the regulation of systemic and pulmonary circulation and of O2 delivery and utilization in swine at rest and during graded treadmill exercise. METHODS: Instrumented swine (n = 12) were subjected to treadmill exercise (1-5 km/h) under control conditions and in the presence of single and combined beta-adrenergic, alpha-adrenergic and muscarinic (M) receptor blockade. RESULTS: Exercise produced a four-fold increase in body O2 consumption, due to a doubling of both cardiac output and the arterio-mixed-venou

Alternative mechanisms for tiotropium.

Tiotropium is commonly used in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Although largely considered to be a long-acting bronchodilator, its demonstrated efficacy in reducing the frequency of exacerbations and preliminary evidence from early studies indicating that it might slow the rate of decline in lung function suggested mechanisms of action in addition to simple bronchodilation. This hypothesis was examined in the recently published UPLIFT study and, although spirometric and other clinical benefits of tiotropium treatment extended to four years, the rate of decline in lung f

Parasympathetic assessment in Parkinson's disease.

There is little evidence of autonomic dysfunction in PD, although autonomic disturbance was included in the original description by J. Parkinson. In addition, there are no data for de novo PD patients. We selected 14 de novo parkinsonians (seven men and seven women), aged 62.7 +/- 8.2 years, with mild disease (stage 1 through 2 on the Hoehn and Yahr's scale), without history of diabetes, heart disease, or alcoholism, and without neuropathy or orthostatic hypotension. Fourteen age- and sex-matched normal persons were controls. We found a highly significant difference in the respiratory sinus ar

Scientific review of the aesthetic uses of botulinum toxin type A.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A), onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for temporary improvement of glabellar lines in patients 65 years and younger in 2002, and has also been used widely for aesthetic purposes such as hyperhidrosis, body shape contouring, and other noninvasive facial procedures. BoNT-A inhibits presynaptic exocytosis of acetylcholine (ACh)-containing vesicles into the neuromuscular junction at cholinergic nerve endings of the peripheral nervous system, thereby paralyzing skeletal muscles. ACh is the most broadly used neurotr

Sympathetic nervous system dysfunction in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and interstitial cystitis: a review of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia often coexists and overlaps with other syndromes such as chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and interstitial cystitis. Chronic stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of these illnesses. The sympathetic nervous system is a key element of the stress response system. Sympathetic dysfunction has been reported in these syndromes, raising the possibility that such dysautonomia could be their common clustering underlying pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to carry out a review of all published comparative case-control studies investigati

Organ-specific sympathetic innervation defines visceral functions.

The autonomic nervous system orchestrates the functions of the brain and body through the sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways1. However, our understanding of the autonomic system, especially the sympathetic system, at the cellular and molecular levels is severely limited. Here we show topological representations of individual visceral organs in the major abdominal sympathetic ganglion complex. Using multi-modal transcriptomic analyses, we identified molecularly distinct sympathetic populations in the coeliac-superior mesenteric ganglia (CG-SMG). Of note, individual CG-SMG populations exhi

[Migraine and hypothalamus].

Migraine is a complex brain disease. The "generator" of the migrainous attacks remains a subject of debate, but the hypothalamus, with its multiple connections with the other parts of the central nervous system and its controls on the pituitary gland and the autonomic nervous system, is a very serious candidate. Many of the premonitory symptoms of migraine attacks find their origin in the hypothalamus. The hormonal changes which occur during feminine genital life and which impact on the life of the migrainous women have their origin in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus exerts control over the
