BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To determine the role of adjuvant radiotherapy (ART) in parotid gland cancer without nodal metastasis, we evaluated the survival outcomes, prognostic factors, and dose-response relationships in patients with node-negative parotid gland cancer patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent curative parotidectomy and were pathologically diagnosed with parotid gland cancer without regional or distant metastases between 2004 and 2019 were reviewed. The benefit of ART in terms of locoregional control (LRC) and progression-free survival (PFS) were evaluated.

Metastatic carcinoid tumor to the salivary glands is an extremely rare occurrence. The authors present a case of a 65-year-old female with a remote history of pT1aN0 atypical carcinoid tumor of the lung status-post resection and class 3 heart failure that was found to have locally advanced disease recurrence on imaging performed for heart transplantation evaluation. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNA) performed on mediastinal lymph nodes revealed metastatic atypical carcinoid tumor. This prompted a CT scan of the head for non-small cell lung cancer staging, which showed a parotid nodule that

Background : An accessory parotid gland (APG) is a common anatomical structure that occurs in 10%-56% of individuals. Pleomorphic adenomas are the most common benign tumors of the APG, and their ideal treatment is surgical excision, although there is a risk for aesthetic disorders and facial nerve damage due to the site of origin. Moreover, despite being benign, these tumors are known to recur. Therefore, it is necessary to achieve both reliable excision and avoidance of facial nerve damage. Case presentation : We report a case of a 49-year-old Japanese man with a mass in his left cheek. The l

BACKGROUND Metastasis to the salivary gland is rare, with the parotid being the most commonly involved site among the salivary glands. Breast cancer metastasis to the parotid gland has been rarely reported in the literature, and relatively few case reports have described the imaging findings. CASE REPORT A 59-year-old woman presented with a recently growing mass in the left parotid gland. She had a past history of left breast cancer 6 years ago, treated by left modified radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and trastuzumab.

The impact of the extent of parotid surgery on postoperative complications has long been considered a topic of controversy. The aim of the current network meta-analysis (NMA) is to answer the following questions: (1) Does the extent of surgical resection of benign parotid tumors increase the risk of postoperative complications? (2) What is the best surgical intervention for treatment of benign parotid tumors that can provide an acceptable balance between tumor recurrence rate and other postoperative complications? A comprehensive search on PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane library was condu

BACKGROUND: Locoregional recurrence rates following parotidectomy for cancer remain as high as 20-30%. The auriculotemporal nerve (ATN) may allow parotid cancers to spread from the facial nerve (FN) toward the skull base, causing local recurrence.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 173 parotidectomies for malignancy. Preoperative and post-recurrence imaging were reviewed by a neuroradiologist for signs of tumor adjacent to the ATN.
RESULTS: Clinical and imaging signs of possible ATN involvement correlated with FN weakness and sacrifice. Eight patients had pathologically confirmed tumor from th

BACKGROUND: Recurrent pleomorphic adenoma (PA) can be a lifelong disease, and rates of subsequent recurrence are high.
METHODS: Patients between 2000 and 2015 were identified. Primary outcome was subsequent recurrence after surgical salvage.
RESULTS: Twenty-seven of 84 patients developed a subsequent recurrence. Risk factors for subsequent recurrence included a higher number of previous recurrences (P < .01), worse preoperative facial nerve function (P < .01), and deep parotid lesion(s) (P < .01). Interval since last surgery was protective (P < .01), specifically >10 years since last surgery

Castleman disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by the formation of painless hyperplastic lymph nodes. It can affect any lymph nodes of the body but rarely affects the salivary gland. We describe a patient with unicentric Castleman disease presenting as a parotid tumor and discuss the diagnosis and treatment of Castleman disease. A 39-year-old man had a painless lump on the right side of his face for 1 year. A computed tomography scan showed a well-defined, homogeneous mass in the right parotid gland. The patient underwent a right-sided superficial parotidectomy with pre

Benign parotid tumours usually present as a slow-growing, asymptomatic mass in the pre-auricular region. Although they are uncommon, surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment due to the risk of malignant transformation in some benign tumours. Surgical techniques have evolved over the years, with superficial parotidectomy and extracapsular dissection being the current procedures of choice. There is currently no gold standard, and it remains unclear which surgical modality is the superior option. A literature review was performed in relation to the relative merits of each technique and to e

Objective:The purpose of this study was to present the usefulness of modified periauricular incision in parotid surgical procedures. Method:Sixteen consecutive partial superfacial parotidectomies were performed using modified periauricular incision. Clinical evaluation of cosmetic satisfaction, incidence of complications such as Frey's syndrome, facial nerve palsy, earlobe numbness and salivary fistula were observed. Result:The parotid tumors were removed in all cases with need for any further skin procedures, as the incisions produced a good aesthetic result. The average scale of cosmetic sat

This paper report a case of a giant recurrent tumor arising in the parotid gland. The patient presents as a tumor for 20 years on her left parotid region showing a rapid increase in the dimensions during the latest 3 months. The computed tomography scan and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) showed it most likely to be a pleomorphic adenoma. The tumor was completely resected with preservation of the facial nerve under general anesthesia. Macroscopically, the excised tumor was measured 21 cm×13 cm×10 cm in scale, and weighed 1.730 kg. Histopathological examination of the excised tumor revea

INTRODUCTION: Different types of surgical management of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland are associated with different recurrence rates.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review of literature until 2014 with meta-analysis was conducted. Inclusion criteria were original studies of patients with surgical management for pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland and recurrence rates, with a median follow-up period of 5 years. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOQAS) was used to assess the quality.
RESULTS: Sixteen studies were included. Four studies show a low recurrence rat

Distant metastasis to salivary glands is a very rare event. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has been known for its high propensity of metastasis to unusual locations and salivary glands are one among those sites. Approximately 0.1% of all salivary gland metastatic neoplasms originate from renal malignancies Literature has reported several studies analysing the metastatic tumors to the oral region. However, very little research work has been published to date to analyse solely the RCC metastasizing to the salivary glands. Thus, this review was conducted to examine the published cases of RCC metastas

INTRODUCTION: Patotidectomy is the treatment of choice for superficial parotid gland lesions. The present study aimed to assess the facial nerve status, as well as peri-and postsurgical complications, in two surgical techniques (antegrade and retrograde) for parotidectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 56 patients diagnosed with parotid neoplasms from 2013-2015. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups of antegrade and retrograde. In the retrograde group, the dissection was performed initially to expose the facial nerve branches, while in the antegrade approach, …
