Emotion recognition in faces and the use of visual context in young people with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.

We compared young people with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) with age, sex and IQ matched controls on emotion recognition of faces and pictorial context. Each participant completed two tests of emotion recognition. The first used Ekman series faces. The second used facial expressions in visual context. A control task involved identifying occupations using visual context. The ability to recognize emotions in faces (with or without context) and the ability to identify occupations from context was positively correlated with both increasing age and IQ score. Neither a diagnosis

Visual object processing in schizophrenia: evidence for an associative agnosic deficit.

Early studies suggested visual form perception impairment in schizophrenia. To re-examine this claim and characterise the deficit neuropsychologically, 41 schizophrenic patients were administered tests sensitive to different levels of visual object perception and recognition. Intellectually well-preserved patients were examined separately on these and additional tests. Single case analysis was also applied to four patients showing varying degrees of general intellectual impairment. As a group, the patients showed little impairment on tests of early visual object perception, but greater impairm

Category-selective processing in the two visual pathways as a function of stimulus degradation by noise.

Understanding the organising principles and functional properties of the primate brain's numerous visually responsive cortical regions is one of the major goals in cognitive neuroscience. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have revealed that neural responses in higher-order visual cortex are shaped by object categories, task context, and spatiotemporal regularities. Beyond these properties, visual processing in the ventral pathway has been shown to be tightly linked to perceptual awareness, while the evidence regarding dorsal visual processing and awareness is mixed. Prism adaptation does not change the rightward spatial preference bias found with ambiguous stimuli in unilateral neglect.

Previous research has shown that prism adaptation (prism adaptation) can ameliorate several symptoms of spatial neglect after right-hemisphere damage. But the mechanisms behind this remain unclear. Recently we reported that prisms may increase leftward awareness for neglect in a task using chimeric visual objects, despite apparently not affecting awareness in a task using chimeric emotional faces (Sarri et al., 2006). Here we explored potential reasons for this apparent discrepancy in outcome, by testing further whether the lack of a prism effect on the chimeric face task task could be explain

Predicting judged similarity of natural categories from their neural representations.

We report a combined behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study of conceptual similarity among members of a natural category (mammals). The study examined the relationship between computed pairwise similarity of neural responses to viewed mammals (e.g. bear, camel, dolphin) and subjective pairwise similarity ratings of the same set of mammals, obtained from subjects after the scanning session. In each functional region of interest (fROI), measures of neural similarity were compared to behavioral ratings. fROIs were identified as clusters of voxels that discriminated inta

Biased Attention to Facial Expressions of Ambiguous Emotions in Borderline Personality Disorder: An Eye-Tracking Study.

Preliminary evidence suggests that biased attention could be crucial in fostering the emotion recognition abnormalities in borderline personality disorder (BPD). We compared BPD patients to Cluster-C personality disorder (CC) patients and non-patients (NP) regarding emotion recognition in ambiguous faces and their visual attention allocation to the eyes. The role of comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in BPD regarding emotion recognition and visual attention was explored. BPD patients fixated the eyes of angry/happy, sad/happy, and fearful/sad blends longer than non-patients. This vi

Task influences pattern discriminability for faces and bodies in ventral occipitotemporal cortex.

Our prior research showed that faces and bodies activate overlapping regions of the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC). However, faces and bodies were nonetheless discriminable in these same overlapping regions when their spatial patterns of activity were classified using multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA). Here we investigated whether these spatial patterns and their time courses were influenced by different categorization tasks. Participants viewed pictures of faces or headless bodies depicting a happy or fearful emotion. In one task, they categorized the picture as a face or a body rega

Filling in at partially deafferented visual cortex.

METHODS: Perceptual visual filling in at the corresponding area of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis scotomas in the fellow eye was studied in 14 patients. Targets were programmed to appear inside the scotoma corresponding area in the fellow eye, and at two control points. RESULTS: The results showed faster perceptual filling-in latencies (p<0.0001) in the scotoma corresponding area than at the control points. CONCLUSIONS: Perceptual filling in is facilitated at the corresponding area of retinal scotomas. The neural mechanisms of this visual facilitation might be similar to those found following

Impaired visual processing of contralesional stimuli in neglect patients: a visual-evoked potential study.

Transient visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded in 11 patients with right brain damage and spatial neglect. High-resolution EEG was recorded using focal stimuli located in the four visual quadrants. VEPs to left stimuli, i.e. located in the neglected side, were compared to VEPs to right stimuli. Results showed that bottom-up processing of a visual stimulus located in the neglected hemifield was intact up to approximately 130 ms from stimulus onset. Hemispheric differences were not significant for either C1 or P1 components representing the activity of striate and extrastriate areas, re

The pattern visual-evoked potential in former preterm infants with retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE: Flash and pattern visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded in 89 former preterm infants (< or = 1500 g birth weight), in whom retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) developed that spontaneously regressed without macular detachment (stages 2-4a). METHODS: Linear and stepwise regression analyses were performed to determine the correlations between transient pattern-reversal P1 VEP latency (n = 154 eyes) at a mean of 7.2 years (median, 6.9 years) postnatal age using a check size nominally equivalent to 20/100 (30 minutes) and the following nine parameters: three immaturity parameters (ge

Frequency-tagged EEG reveals category-selective responses to face race.

Racial-category information in faces is visually and socially salient, and is rapidly extracted by the human brain. Yet, its electrophysiological encoding remains unclear. Event-related potentials findings are mixed, reporting contradictory effects of race on neural responses. To inform this debate, we used fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS), an alternative objective and implicit method to measure neural face categorization. In Experiment 1, Western European participants viewed a 6 Hz stream of same- or other-race faces with periodic oddball faces from the alternate race. Results showed n

Detail memory for similar short stories among older and younger adults.

Studies of pattern separation have consistently shown poorer performance among older adults when identifying perceptually similar objects compared to younger adults, despite equal performance at recognizing repeated objects. Additionally, tasks that embed or overlay objects on contexts reliably show benefits from repeating the context but detriments when the context is shifted, particularly for older adults. However, it remains unclear as to how performance on these tasks generalize to everyday memory functioning. Pattern separation is likely critical for utilizing not only subtle perceptual d

Hemispheric dominance in reading system alters contribution to face processing lateralization across development.

Face processing dominates the right hemisphere. This lateralization can be affected by co-lateralization within the same system and influence between different systems, such as neural competition from reading acquisition. Yet, how the relationship pattern changes through development remains unknown. This study examined the lateralization of core face processing and word processing in different age groups. By comparing fMRI data from 36 school-aged children and 40 young adults, we investigated whether there are age and regional effects on lateralization, and how relationships between lateraliza

Contribution of the lateral occipital and parahippocampal cortices to pattern separation of objects and contexts.

Contextual features are integral to episodic memories; yet, we know little about context effects on pattern separation, a hippocampal function promoting orthogonalization of overlapping memory representations. Recent studies suggested that various extrahippocampal brain regions support pattern separation; however, the specific role of the parahippocampal cortex-a region involved in context representation-in pattern separation has not yet been studied. Here, we investigated the contribution of the parahippocampal cortex (specifically, the parahippocampal place area) to context reinstatement eff

Impairment of emotional expression detection after unilateral medial temporal structure resection.

Detecting emotional facial expressions is an initial and indispensable component of face-to-face communication. Neuropsychological studies on the neural substrates of this process have shown that bilateral amygdala lesions impaired the detection of emotional facial expressions. However, the findings were inconsistent, possibly due to the limited number of patients examined. Furthermore, whether this processing is based on emotional or visual factors of facial expressions remains unknown. To investigate this issue, we tested a group of patients (n = 23) with unilateral resection of medial tempo

Identifying task-general effects of stimulus familiarity in the parietal memory network.

Studies of human memory have implicated a "parietal memory network" in the recognition of familiar stimuli. However, the automatic vs. top-down nature of information processing within this network is not yet understood. If the network processes stimuli automatically, one can expect repetition-related changes both when familiarity is central to an ongoing task and when it is task-irrelevant. Here, we tested this prediction in a group of 40 human subjects using fMRI. Subjects initially named 100 objects aloud in the scanner. They then repeated the same task with novel and previously-named object

Dissociable Neural Systems for Recognizing Places and Navigating through Them.

When entering an environment, we can use the present visual information from the scene to either recognize the kind of place it is (e.g., a kitchen or a bedroom) or navigate through it. Here we directly test the hypothesis that these two processes, what we call "scene categorization" and "visually-guided navigation", are supported by dissociable neural systems. Specifically, we manipulated task demands by asking human participants (male and female) to perform a scene categorization, visually-guided navigation, and baseline task on images of scenes, and measured both the average univariate resp

Disorders of representation and control in semantic cognition: Effects of familiarity, typicality, and specificity.

We present a case-series comparison of patients with cross-modal semantic impairments consequent on either (a) bilateral anterior temporal lobe atrophy in semantic dementia (SD) or (b) left-hemisphere fronto-parietal and/or posterior temporal stroke in semantic aphasia (SA). Both groups were assessed on a new test battery designed to measure how performance is influenced by concept familiarity, typicality and specificity. In line with previous findings, performance in SD was strongly modulated by all of these factors, with better performance for more familiar items (regardless of typicality),

Diverging receptive and expressive word processing mechanisms in a deep dyslexic reader.

We report on KJ, a patient with acquired dyslexia due to cerebral artery infarction. He represents an unusually clear case of an "output" deep dyslexic reader, with a distinct pattern of pure semantic reading. According to current neuropsychological models of reading, the severity of this condition is directly related to the degree of impairment in semantic and phonological representations and the resulting imbalance in the interaction between the two word processing pathways. The present work sought to examine whether an innovative eye movement supported intervention combining lexical and seg

Multimodal emotion processing in autism spectrum disorders: an event-related potential study.

This study sought to describe heterogeneity in emotion processing in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) via electrophysiological markers of perceptual and cognitive processes that underpin emotion recognition across perceptual modalities. Behavioral and neural indicators of emotion processing were collected, as event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while youth with ASD completed a standardized facial and vocal emotion identification task. Children with ASD exhibited impaired emotion recognition performance for adult faces and child voices, with a subgroup displaying intact recognition. La
